Canada's Drag Race has premiered to mixed reactions among fans of the Rupaul's Drag Race Franchise. Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman is under particular scrutiny for critiques to contestants on the show: primarily critiques given to Jimbo. But - is Brooke Lynn Hytes just as bad? INTRO:
We are over halfway through Canada’s drag race at the time I’m filming this and it seems the Canada’s Drag Race Judging panel just can’t seem to get it right. Furthermore, JBC just keeps digging himself into deeper and deeper holes as the season progresses. In fact, his name comes up more than any others when discussing Canada’s Drag race. I think I can objectively say that the majority of fans are not happy with his performance as a judge. People are signing change.org petitions to remove him from the panel, fans are flooding the CDR social media with requests for his removal, exiting contestants are even suggesting JBC should be nicer in the next season. I even asked my patrons if they thought Jeffrey should be invited back for CDR Season 2. He was the result.
However, fans have been much quieter about Brooke Lynn Hytes and Stacey. Is the hate for JBC warranted?
I am making this video not to jump on the hate train - I don’t believe in spreading hate - but rather to critically analyze how we got to this point, compare his performance to the other judges, and see if we can view what is happening on CDR from a different perspective.
I’m going to be revisiting some of the panels’ most inflammatory critiques and questionable decisions thus far. We’re going to be judging the judges on the canada’s drag race judging panel. By the end of this video… I hope to have arrived at the answer to the question, “Should Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman Be invited Back for a Second Season of CDR? And … what about the other judges?

Tho Brooklyn need to polisher job as a judge, I like her job. She has proven that she has what it takes and know how it works. She has also given support and be clear on how the competition is. Also being the drag queen of the panel, she is the one to be strict.and for the other judges, a lot to learn. They should remember that Michelle is difficult because she is pushing the queens and she speaks with either love as she she is tough.

I think the main issue with the judges on CDR at this point, outside of the "one source of drag truth" that RuPaul provides in the US/UK version, is that the two main judges on the US version have been in drag spaces for their entire adult lives. Michelle, for all her faults, grew up in NYC clubs, learning from Willi Ninja and Cesar Valentino. She's also been friends with Ru for decades, so their back-and-forth is fun and familiar. Trying to replicate not only that knowledge and living the life with three people who may know each other, but aren't friends who grew up in the scene, is hard to do.
There's also a "Michael Kors/Janice Dickenson/Simon Cowell approach to American reality judging that is hard to replicate, because all three of those judges are harsh and mean, but they also know every in and out of their industry, so it comes from a place of knowledge, so the meanness is more forgiven, for better or for worse.

  • @RadEdits
    @RadEdits Před 3 lety +596

I feel like the judges think they have to be “sassy” and “witty” since it’s drag race and fans tend to love a little ✨spice✨ but what they fail to understand is that being genuinely cruel and insulting is not sassy. It’s just mean spirited and low. Ru, Michelle, Ross, and Carson are _actually_ sassy; they don’t throw insults at the queens, they make lighthearted jokes every now and then, but they never cross boundaries. CDR Judges should’ve learned to back off their rudeness immediately after giving Lemon a panic attack on stage... but they didn’t ?? And I truly cannot understand why. Why would you continue to throw insults at the queens after giving one a panic attack?? It’s stupidity.
Aside from that, Bussy already said this a bit, but what makes the judging so hard to watch is how they never really critique the queens. They never let the queens know what they can do better to improve their drag nor do they let them know what’s holding them back or even making them excel. They basically just say “love it” or “hate it” without further elaboration. Like.. great? You have an opinion? but you’re also a JUDGE on TV, you need to elaborate on what you love/hate and why you love/hate it. You can’t just state your simple opinion, it’s useless and provides no benefits or learning moments for the queens.

If you go back to his first appearance on All Stars 3 in the Bitchelor episode, he wasn't that over the top flamboyant character that he is currently playing on Canada's Drag Race, which is why his current facade doesn't feel authentic to me. I could understand the critique given if she was going for a zombie look, like the remake of her first time in drag, but this is not the case! Let's remember the Raja's Marie Antoinette look, that's exactly how they used to paint in the 1800s, because being pale in face was a sign of nobility (if you were tanned, it meant you were working in the fields).

@KingofThebes LOL, spoon fed me misinformation. Thats a trope. Its not real information. It was obvious that they didn't work outside and in fact...living a pastoral sort of life was IDEALIZED not shunned. Marie Antoinette herself had an entire little peasant inspired village created at Versailles where she'd dress down in muslin gowns and collect eggs and live a bucolic fantasy. Most other aristocrats of the period also had themselves painted as idealized sherpherdesses and as Diana, Goddess of the hunt. The pale makeup has NOTHING to do with 'showing they didn't work in the fields'. Literally nothing. If anything it has its roots in racism and being white...nothing to do with not being a peasant. It also was not that heavy. Jimbo's makeup looks more akin to Elizabethan makeup than anything to do with the rococo period. So please, don't think you can lecture me about the 18th century. I know more about the fashion, makeup, culture, architecture, jewelry and furniture than you could dream of learning. Sit down.

Because as was said previously it meant you didn’t have to do labor. You said it was more akin to racisme that’s is not completely true not completely wrong either though it had more to do with social standing, which does support the rasisme in a part that people of other skin tones were deemed on the bottom of that ladder. I believe that the production team doesn’t really know how to hide the fact that the wins are more or less already decided in advance. We all know how reality competition shows work. Where RuPaul herself is present, it’s easier to hide it, because RuPaul is a central part of the production choices (despite what some people keep insisting on), and there is no massive disconnect between Ru’s comments and the final result. With CDR we are missing the figure of an authorative person who knows what they’re doing (At this point Ru is a massive, massive expert in running a competition show). Everything else crumbles.

No, I don’t think the show ever would give a judge a villain edit.
They desperately want as famous and big name judges as possible to agree to be on the show as guest judges and permanent judges, to help promote the show.
If they are going to try replace the judges for a potential season 2 they are going to have quite a hard time doing it. Who would want to take the job now after seeing the viewers very strong response to the season 1 judges?
That is quite a risk to take with their career to accept that job.
I do however think JBC was asked, cast or entirely scripted to be the mean judge. And production totally botched the execution of it. I think they just have no way of saving it, because that is all there is.
They only have footage of those sort of critiques with JBC, so they could only potentially cut most of his critiques.
But I’m guessing that all the judges have something in their contracts about getting more or less equal screen time as all the other two judges.
And the show would have a hard time doing it, they need the critiques that makes no sense to explain the ranking of the girls that makes no sense.
I think all the judges got weird notes of the sort of critiques production wanted from them while filming.
I think production asked for ‘iconic’ and ‘memeable’ critiques.
They wanted “meh” moments, a "Is that a prosthetic nose?" or "No, no you talk like this! This is how you talk!".
All of them are pretty mean and unhelpful. But they and others similar to them are probably some of the most well known and shared moments from the judges.
Doesn’t make for good judging or tv if they try to force that kind of moments all the time and that is all we ever get form the panel and nothing else really.
Yeah no I think the main problem is that producers behind the scene had a very bad grasp of what would make good tv and understand what the fans would want while planning and filming the show.
And now has a mess they are trying to edit the best they can.

I believe that JBC and Brooklyn are trying too hard to mimic the judging and relationship of Ru and Michele Visage. Brooklyn even made one of the same remarks to a contestant that Ru Paul made to someone in one of the seasons "She's wearing my outfit", I didn't really notice this until I rewatched a few of RPDR Allstars. With that said, I do believe this is where the issue is as there are some queues that come to them from the producers during the critiques, but I don't feel they know how to make the remarks funny or land in the right place. One of things I like so much about Thailand season is Art and Pangina really know how to judge and seem to both be Drag experts so to speak, they both bring some very interesting and positive critiques to their contestants as they truly come across as caring and in assisting in the growth of contestants. Same thing I feel about the Boulets on their seasons, seem truly caring. JBC is too busy being cute, and he's on RuPaul production blah. He needs to grow as well and maybe after this he can learn a thing or too.

Brooke Lynn had a nasty attitude and compared everyone’s drag to her own. As if she’s the standard that everyone should be held to. Bitch didn’t win her season. She might have looked pretty on S11 but her acting and comedy sucked. I guess that’s why she had no appreciation for Jimbo. Don’t have a double standard for the judges- if Jeffrey is being questioned, Brooke Lynn should be too! She made really insulting comments during her critiques of the queens. Actually, all three judges couldn’t make up their mind whether they liked camp, dirty drag or glam, beauty drag. Their standards changed every episode.

One would think that the judging panel of a country where one of their official languages is French would get the reference.

Haven't finished the vid yet, but I think one of the big things going against JBC is that no one sees him as an expert on drag. Other judges/hosts who are seen as extra harsh and critical, like Simon Cowell, Michelle Visage, Janice Dickenson Gordon Ramsay, Jillian Michaels, etc are considered some of the absolute foremost in their fields. You can disagree with their methods, but rarely with the actual validity of their criticisms.

Ok, this is my theory about Rita's placement (I love her, this is not a hate comment). She is french canadian, more, from Montreal, my hometown. It can be hard to understand for non canadians, but there are huge tensions between french canadians and the rest of Canada. It is mostly for historical reasons but we rarely feel represented or respected when it comes to our language and traumas (which can be said about pretty much all natives and immigrants btw). People from Montreal are known to be very vocal about it, especially confronting english canadians whenever they can.
In a lot of canadian competitions in the past, french canadians have been snobbed, forbidden of even competing, not taken seriously, the list goes on. My theory is that since a lot of inequalities are being called out (me too, black lives matter, etc...) and even though the french canadian issue is way far from the ones I mentioned, they don't want this controversy that could ruin the show. Also, Rita is related (drag daughter?) to one of the most popular drag queen in Canada : Mado. And if she turns her back on them, almost all Quebec queens will.
Again, just my bullshit theory based on politic reasons and money.

I think we react so strongly to JBC's critiques in part because he's a conventionally attractive man. Part of what everyone loves about drag and Drag Race is that anyone can transform themself and enjoy the sort of power and attention that's usually reserved for super hot people. So it just kind of sucks to watch a traditionally hot dude tear down a queen who's out there feeling her fantasy. Obviously, he can't control what he looks like, but it would've been nice if one of the producers had told him to emulate Carson Kresley instead of Michele Visage.

Here's my personal opinion about JBC as a judge: Does he deserve racist insults, death threats and hate on his social media? NO. (No one does)? Does he deserve the harsh critiques he's getting? YES.
How do you expect to be rude and bitchy with your own words and not expect for someone to clap back at you? The problem with Mr. Chapman is that he tries so hard to imitate RuPaul to point where he does not seem authentic, and that makes it uncomfortable to watch. You're asking someone to show personality yet you imitate someone else's mannerisms? I thing the issue as well is that he has never done drag and lacks of fashion references (like the Jimbo critic) the best thing that can happen aside of the show addressing the hate from the fans is him apologizing for his words, because he has been rude, maybe he's not like that in real life, and we can't judge him because we don't know him but he has been really rude on the show and that has not been edited for shade or try to build drama. (Brooke Lynn also)
There's a way you can say things without being rude. If it was on my hands to have him on S2, I would rather choose someone else who has more tact and experience in the fashion world rather than being a model.

I guess they're realizing that "presentation" on the runway isn't exactly Jimbo's strongest quality despite his outfits arguably being the best throughout the season so they're giving that much more weight than anything else and it's fucking bullshit.

Whereas RuPaul is pretty consistent in favoring performance in the challenge over the runway, hence why we've had many queens do kind of poorly in the runway win because of their excellent performance in the challenge. To RuPaul, the runway typically serves as a "tie breaker" or which queen gets saved from lip syncing and with this standard in mind, Utica's overall placements each week makes sense.

And I doubt that is the character he wants to portray. My assumption is he thinks he’s being acerbic but witty. Unfortunately, as can be the case with a good looking boy, they don’t have to work as hard at being popular, and the personalities can be lacking. In American Horror Story he's playing himself... just another bitchy queen; which is evidently who he really is. And we've already got a surplus of that archetype... ohh huunnnyyyy
EDIT: PS. Bussy, you are.. in a word.. ... 'Delicious'
    ; )

I don't think its necessarily a bad thing to have a "mean" judge, but I think it needs to come with genuine critique behind it.
Like if you desperately wanted to be "mean" to Jimbo during her pageant runway it would most likely be better to say something like "Jimbo you look much, much, much older this week. If the criteria was old glam you would be the winner. Next time let's see a bit more of a refined shape to your body. The goal is flowey, not frumpy". Which still gives Jimbo multiple points of reference to improve for next week.
But even then, why be rude for no reason? I'm not saying coddle the queens, but don't fucking bully them?

excellent point!!! If all of his critiques were "specific" negative - then we may not be where we are at!

@@BussyQueen I think JBC is trying to go for a catty persona as a judge, and for all we know he may have said some genuine points for improvement, but it seems like he just either got a bad edit (which as a judge is a bit hard to believe) or he just straight up wanted to come across as rude.
It's so easy to be rude and productive at the same time. How hard is it for Jeff to say "Is time management a strength of yours? Otherwise you may need to scale back your creative endeavours" instead of "MMMMMMMMMMM PERHAPS YOU SHOULD.. MMMMUSE IT BETTER MAYBE".

that critique is shit though? Telling someone they look 'much, much, much, older' is ruder than anything they've said so far, and "the goal is flowy not frumpy" is not only vague but not necessarily true, 'flowy' isn't necessarily an ideal silhouette. If they wanted to critique her they could have mentioned that her make-up reads as older, told her that her waistline gets lost, and that whatever she was using to create the hoop skirt looks boxy and uneven

Ilona may not have felt like the foundation comment was a big deal, but she also felt like she had to promise 'I'll edit my ass off, I promise' at the end- it was really sad

You covered this super well. I also wanted to point out there are a few cases where important factors of judging are completely ignored. Like i recorded Boa's episode 1 critique of her outfit and I noticed that not one of them even COMMENTED on the outfit itself, the guest judge DID point out the potatoes but again, didn't even give feedback on them, just calling them "wow". Despite the outfit being reminiscent of multiple "corsets with a piece of fabric" looks that instantly get ridiculed by judges (I've even seen a side by side of it next to Porkchop's original look that got her eliminated.) Also, Kyne's outfit was berated for the pieces falling off and her difficulty to walk in it, without anyone remarking that it was styled and tailored very well. Combine this with Rita's out of place win and The fact that all of this was in episode 1 really set this season off on the wrong foot.
