    Exposing the TRUE COST of Rupaul's Drag Race
    ►JOIN MY PATREON: / bussyqueen
    What does it cost to compete on Rupaul's Drag Race? Today we’ll be exposing exactly how much money it takes to compete on Rupaul's Drag Race by looking into how much queens like Bob, Trinity, Cracker, Yvie, Sasha, Aquaria, Monique Heart, Dusty Ray Bottoms, and Honey Davenport and Gottmik spent to compete, looking at the runway looks their budget bought them and addressing topics like: how can a queen possibly spend $20,000 on runways? Is drag race turning into a competition where only those with money can succeed? How much does one drag queen outfit cost? And is Rupaul's Drag Race Worth It?
    To address all of this, we'll be taking a look at how much drag race outfits cost, how many outfits were needed on a a season by season basis, and creating some fun charts!

      Bussy you know I've always been a huge fan of you sweetie but I'm really pleased that you're bringing the fanbase things that normally they wouldn't think about. I watch drag race with rose coloured glasses for the first 8 seasons it wasn't until season 9 ended that I stepped back and took another look.
      I think it is so important that the fans be aware of the extreme sacrifices that these girls are going through in order to compete. I was aware of the enormous amount of money that was unnecessarily being spent in order to win the competition. Really very heartbreaking especially for the girls who go home early. Something I didn't know that really made my stomach sink was when you said the girls are only paid $500 per episode that they are aired in. That really hit home because I thought of queens that had cancelled months of Engagements that would never see that money again and unless they were Vanessa or a piece of broccoli they'd receive a paycheck for $500 before taxes. Wow.
      Please keep this content coming. The Queen's need and deserve an ally because their voice is taken away right from the get-go. Love you. Big hugs

      I feel like they shouldn’t be able to spend over a certain amount for fashion. Gottmik on her video with NikkieTutorials says she would spend EVEN MORE when she goes on all stars. It’s just unfair to free other queens even if we love to see the expensive looks.

    When Chi Chi (RIP angel) entered the werk room, she'd been earning 12K per year (gross - thats before tax), she mentioned this at a few college appearances. To tell a queen "you don't need money, girl" when you make more than 4x her annual income for just one episode, Michelle was wayy too entitled. It was actually really cruel. The look on Chi Chi's face was one of someone who already felt insecure about her look and financial status - there was no need to rub it in, especially since she made so many of her looks while at Drag Race. These days the girls are spending Chi Chi's annual income on just one look - it is very clear you "need money, girl" - or incredible contacts with resources to share. Maybe you don't need the money to win, but you certainly need it to make a (positive) splash.

I don't know about other people but I would much rather watch the process of them making looks from start to finish than watch the weekly challenges that are sometimes very silly and pointless. Apart from snatch game and the final songwriting/dancing to RuPaul's song challenge, those are fun. But other than that, I would love to see Drag race give queens runway themes in advance so they could prepare the materials and designs at home and then give them a couple of days to make them on the actual competiton. It would be interesting to see the dynamics and the friendships around that as well, that part of the show where they're doing their makeup in the workroom right before they hit the runway is my favourite part of the episode. Just queens kiki-ing, lauging, reading each other with half of their makeup done. But I guess that would be "boring tv" for most people.

      @@madeinbusanjkjm you're making a whole new show dude. You want Drag Top Model or Drag Project Runway. It wouldn't be fair to force queens to make all their costumes on camera. There's always queens who either can't sew or have a limited sewing ability. Not all outfits can be created in a set amount of hours, and honestly the runways would suffer for it. Many of the costumes that are impressive require weeks to months of work. Being able to use designers makes for a more fair race.

      Drag isn't just about fashion, it's about a multitude of talents like comedy, singing, acting, dancing, and above all: impersonating. It'd be unfair to not only make sewing a huge component of drag, but to forget that Drag Queens are unique in many different ways. They can be versatile, but that doesn't always mean they're crafty seamstresses. The problem is also when new drag fans try to impose what they think drag should be, after watching reality shows like "America's Next Top Model", "Project Runway", and "Victoria Secret Xmas Fashion Show". Leave drag culture as is, and just accept it & value it without the need to co-opt it & over-commercialize it.

    • @neeliknowsnothing
      @neeliknowsnothing Před 3 lety +56

      I think a big issue with this is that sewing challenges can be exhausting. The fact that the only explosive untucked we had this season was in the ball challenge is very telling because the queens said that they were drained by the end so it's not about being "too boring". In season 3, every person in the top 4 knew how to sew, with Raja and Yara being designers, but Yara, Raja and Alexis had panic attacks. Season 11 is another season that was exhausting for queens and it had multiple sewing challenges. For some queens, like Symone, designing is about collaboration. For many others runways just don't matter as much. Sure, some queens like Roxxxy do sew everything the day of, Chichi said she was exhausted doing that on all stars and quickly decided she wanted to be eliminated. While a project runway-esque spinoff of drag race would be interesting, I don't think it would be fair to make drag race into that, as it's meant to be a platform for all kinds of drag queens. The issue with drag race these days is that there's too much focus on runways, and it's a shame because we end up missing out on queens like Jinkx, Shangela, Juju or Bob

      You know when you're into Show Business you know how to get the best for less. It just helps that certain Queens have a concept if you have a concept then you can shop around and find somebody who kind of like meets you right there in the middle and maybe if they're really normally charge you $5,000 to make the garment they may decide to do it 4000 because they know that the government will be seen on drag race and it'll be seen for the rest of all time. If they are seasoned Queens they have met up with designers before; they have gone shopping at the wholesale spaces they know how to pull stuff for themselves. I'm in the theater and I learned from just being around people who design what are the better fabrics fabrics that will make you look expensive. Do you know that you can buy beaded fabric? A lot of people don't know that. So you know if you're small like Miss cracker the most she should ever need to put together a garment might be four yards of fabric even if it's $100 a yard she's only spent $400 and then she can afford to pay a designer or seamstress to put together the look that she has conceived. and I don't go for the story about it being RuPaul's standards and that's why everybody's doing it if anybody has studied drag queens and drag culture you know that the drag queens always look up to the people who bring it in terms of the looks department and STYLE. If you go to a drag ball you'll see so many people that spend and look like they are totally so expensive they may not be they just look that way. And we all have to admit we gasp and go ooh and ahh when we see something come out on that runway that's just stunning! That to me is the magic of Gott Mik. Mik has concept. So you just can't wait for the runway way cuz you want to see what she brings to the table. And with her kind of ingenuity I bet you that she was able to get those garments for less. If I was going into a competition and which I have to have anywhere between 12 and 14 garments that shows creativity, ingenuity, style and have to look expensive I would go to a design school and find students to execute my garments. They would still get paid but maybe just not the same amount and they would bring to the table a whole lot more because students have a lot of ingenuity.

I am tired of seeing the same designers over and over and over. It's boring. This system also caters to pageant queens.

    That’s been the talking point for a while in my old apartment - that the prize money just isn’t worth that much anymore and should be adjusted. We know this thing is a juggernaut that eats people alive., so they should probably do something to keep the show fresh and the investment into it. Longer seasons are not the answer.

    Queens like utica are doing it well these days i think. Her looks were incredible and custom made, but they were custom made by her or in close partnership with her. Another important element is that the show gives them barely any notice (a matter of weeks I think) to get everything together, so even if you want to be a crafty queen there's no time. Sasha said her and her partner didn't sleep for 2 weeks in order to make all her the outfits in time.

    The recent season which had a high number of queens who made their own clothes was the 12h (no wonder, one of the best). Yet one could see many of them had cash to invest in such looks. We live in a time in which it's getting harder and harder to succeed when you really start from the bottom.
