►JOIN MY PATREON: / bussyqueen
Hi Ugly! Join me today for an exposé of the Drag Race Contestant Contract (Participant Agreement Form) all cast members of Rupaul's Drag Race must sign. I was able to obtain a copy of the Season 14 contract, so this is all super fresh drag race tea. We'll be covering topics like how much the queens on drag race get paid by World of Wonder, what they're required to do when filming, what exactly they sign away for a chance at becoming America's Next Drag Superstar, and discussing their NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement "Obligation").
The drag race contract is distributed by World of Wonder, the production company behind Rupaul's Drag Race. The show currently lives on VH1, which is owned by Viacom Media Networks (VMN).

Hi Ugly! Would you sign this contract? Lemme know what you think the craziest thing in there is down below!
►JOIN MY PATREON: www.patreon.com/bussyqueen
Seems a bit crossroads demon deal to me - I wouldn't sign it, but I can understand why so many do. The exposure a drag artist gets is unparalleled, but is it really worth getting milked that hard, for that long? For some uber successful Queens perhaps it's worth it, IDK.
Why did you lock the copy of the contract behind a paywall?
I would probably not sign this contract. It is almost like signing a deal with the devil. Once you try to leave they find a way to pull you back in.
Absolutely not haha
Just thinking: do you think all the cameos and gigs count as the "appearances" that force you to be available for the next 4 years?
Like Vanjie entering the workroom to help the people for the snatch game, or Raven and Juju being contestants at the SnatchGames?
Or even Victoria Porkchop occasionally being in the audience?
So if rpdr doesn't want to let go of you, but doesn't want to make you compete in a season either, they make you do these little gigs to maintain their contractual power?
This would explain why they've been showing us Porkchop all these years lol.
Creepy
Nina bonina brown knew what was up when she said “sue me”

LMAOOOO
i always thought it was weird that a show that rakes in millions and millions every single season only awards the top queen $100,000, when the queens are the sole reason why anyone is watching
I know right at first it was only 10k only because I understand at that time it was low budget and it was filmed in Ru’s garage but things took off but still low budget and it was 50k then around 3rd or 4th season it started 100k as of now still but now that it makes millions and not to mention they make millions off other international ones like Canada, UK, Thailand, Holland and soon Australia and Spain and Mexico and the international ones they don’t get cash awards.
Don’t forget, it’s $100K PRETAXED!! Meaning, they will need to pay about 40% in taxes on that... so it’s the Queen’s responsibility to have at least 40K left the next year when the IRS comes knocking
@@59jlopez70 There isn’t RPDR in Mexico lol
@Michael Thurlow I'm glad I am the exception to this rule. I started watching when one of my high school students put on a drag fashion show fundraiser for the school--he helped create drag personas for students, teachers, parents, and community leaders for the show. He came to school in what he called "basic drag," and everyone loved him...and this is in farming country in Minnesota--about 1.5 hours from where Utica grew up. Unfortunately, my dear, sweet student passed away from an ongoing battle with lymphoma during COVID last Spring. We still haven't been able to have a community gathering to celebrate his life.

If a Queen doesn't like the terms of the contract it's fine, nobody is gonna force her to sign the contract. Sure the Queens who are not on RPDR do not get the same recognition of the Queens who get on the show, but they likely never got the recognition they deserve even before RPDR became popular, so it's not like Rupaul made their careers harder than they were... This makes so much sense why Dahlia Sins kept coming back every other epsiode as that Broccoli. She was literally forced to do so.
I would hope that means that she was paid for every episode she was in though? Even if she wasn’t a contestant. it’s crazy that SO many queens are willing to take these risks. surely it’s paid off for a lot of them, but i can’t imagine the untold stories.
I feel like a good portion of the queens sign with so much excitement they just don’t read through all this. 50+ pages of legal-eze? How exhausting. And who would’ve expected it to be so horrific. So sad.
@@sonictonic_ I’m a contract lawyer, and you’d be surprised how many people don’t read contracts
@@420greatestqueen I wouldn't. I speculate that maybe 2% of people actually read it, if not less.
@@sonictonic_ Horrific? Just because the contract says they have power over their social media doesn't mean they wont let them use it or make money from it. It might have some limitations but they had 10000 followers one day and a million the next because of the show so ofc they would protect themselves there
@@sonictonic_ and much less real, since they do not have money, they do not have a lawyer to tell them if the contract is worth it.
The contract for SURE became so much more restrictive after WOW and Roople witnessed Trixie’s success and merchandising. Rupaul likes to note that Trixie’s “rich” to the point where it seems resentful lol
Oh thats really gross to put together. Rupaul (and all the other rich tv exec’s) realized they could milk the queens even harder even at the cost of those queens individual careers. Thats evil
Look at who’s been really successful after the show. Pretty much all of them were from early seasons
The scariest thing is the sheer number of Queens who do't have access to legal advice /didn't read and understand the contract fully.... WoW literally owns them now
Let's not turn grown people into victims.
Anyone can take it to legal aid
Ironic, considering your icon is BTS. Have you looked even partially into the kpop industry? The amount of control and exploitation that goes into the scene pales, PALES in comparison to a discussion about drag queens that actually have autonomy--the members of BTS do NOT.
@@ThatsJustMyBabyDaddy why is it impossible for a grown adult to be a victim
@@LeighPhillips78 babe, we know more about kpop exploitation than you ever will. Your one "dark side of kpop" video pales in comparison to the surmountable amount of info kpop stans/fans know. I'd actually say BTS are kind of a bad example for your argument actually, considering they make millions per year, own huge shares in their own company, and are well known for producing and writing their own music. Not to say that they aren't controlled at all, but BTS is a really bad example to use if you wanna talk about exploitation in kpop. 😊

I think it was Gemma Chen who said that once you get casted in a Marvel movie you're pretty much theirs (as long as they want you around). That really turns me off from auditioning in these type of productions. Booking a gig is great but not so much when you have to agree to those crazy contracts.
i remember when trixie said she was asked do all stars she canceled $60,000 worth in gigs so winning all stars only made her break even (makes sense since 40% of the prize goes into taxes.) even after all the success and opportunities trixie is still playing catch up. drag race is designed so that the contestants are squeezed dry and the people at the top make the most money. don’t forget that.
They do will be making more money than the queens its factual and how businesses work. Doesn't mean the queens leave empty handed because of the show Trixie was able to get those 60000 bookings and after she took the crown they were waiting for her and even more money
There’s a video on CZcams of Trixie & Katya saying “the prize should be $1,000,000.00 “ but then they laughed and moved on to the next subject

Ya girl Vangie made being first home a fucking icon
.....isn't that like ALL competition reality shows tho?
Christina Thomas no because they don’t pay 20k+ to be on those shows
@@christinathomas1417 most reality shows you just have to show up. on top of stepping away from work and gigs, queens have to take money out of their own pockets to pay for runway looks and extra drag materials that'll look good enough for the no-drag knowledge judges to not call the outfits "crafty," which... is what drag usually is. it's a huge risk for queens to join the show, but if they have the confidence to make it all the way, why the hell not.
Why are people acting as if these Queens are being forced into this contract? They're not.

The fandom should really pressure these producers to include full Health insurance for the total time they are undercontrol of WOW.
Considering how many queens fucked their ankles/knees and how much healthcare costs, a season with a bad knee can cost the company another $100.000. And I'm not saying they can't afford it, I'm saying they're too cheap to ever consider health insurance.
Hell, the contestants with cancer were given a pat on the back and told 'you can come back next year if you make it'.
Or we could just pass Universal Healthcare!
@@dorindagrandbois7847 that is nice to say but unfortunately, we are years from that. But the fandom can force the hand of the company that hires these queens and employees.
The contestants would have to be apart of a union. Union workers get healthcare etc. All public information. And the contract is given before you even submit an audition tape so. This all falls back on the contestants.
@Fact Checker nah, the fandom likes to show its a$$. So why not show it for healthcare.
I worked in the legal department of a movie studio in LA. I remember when all of the contracts were changed from "world wide rights" to "through out the universe". This change was made about 20 years ago. Cray cray 🤪
I'm pretty sure queens of the caliber of Katya, Trixie, Sasha, Bob, Bianca, Violet, among others have *OF COURSE* re-negotiated their contracts.
Now I'm wondering if Dela and Adore even got payed since they both eliminated themselves from the show...
i wish they payed dela for that awesome TV moment
Yes - they would've been paid for the episodes they were present, as CA labor laws still apply - regardless of any production agreement. Legally they have to be paid at least minimum wage, but since they're both popular queens, WOW would've honored the contracted appearance rate - they're too valuable to the franchise. You'll notice Adore came back for the reunion, and Dela returned for the peer judging / finale ep .
Yea, DeLa won like 15 or 20 thousant dollars.
And Ginny Lemon
@@benjamintic3653 DeLa and Shangela won 25k. Kennedy and BeBe won 10k, Aja won 2k.
But it doesn't matter, because taxes are so high that only 100k main prize is enough for anything.

She told she wanted to give Monet her 50k because after taxes almost nothing would be left from 50k.

I’m almost 100% sure we would all raise $2 million so Tamisha could tell us all
Yesssss someone start the gofund me lol
Well I’m in!
The potential for a tell all book would give them enough to pay that off.
Hell Yeah I know I would help!! 💯
OMG. I will never think the queens are being spoilt brats again whenever they complain about not wanting to be at an event. They are being used, controlled, and kept down. Some are millionaires, but most are literally just scraping by, trying to get at least a small percentage of their own creative work!
Throughout this thread I can't stop thinking about Chi Chi DeVayne, could she even have afforded proper care? Was there any way of her being with us today if WOW had adequately compensated her? Maybe...
@@beckstheimpatient4135 well, you DIDNT have to make me cry today, but here we are 😪

So does that mean that WoW gets a percentage of let's say, Trixie Cosmetics???
And here I thought the cute cameos were voluntary. ha!😂😂😂😂

It is like you have to be a lawyer before going on any reality show.
No, just hire one. You should be reading and understanding every contract you sign.
IT MAKES SENSE. It’s makes sense why everyone was on Kameron Micheals for being quiet.
Kameron entered the chat know that everything she did and said could be used against her.
it's so heartbreaking, production literally rules what you do. let's not forget about the villains edit and how they can show you however they want.
Villains edit is bullshit the most part. Some of the villains claim it was an edit and then say it wasnt and then come back to the show. They dont rule what you do they just have the option to.
I mean, this is all just normal for reality television. In fact a lot of contracts are way, way worse.
@@katiefincher2433 Sure! I'm just saying that many of the queens on this show need the exposure for economic purposes and when they get there, they are portrayed as bad people, or shady. THAT is heartbreaking, for example Brita, who almost committed suicide because of the hate they received. (I'm sorry if it wasn't clear, english is not my first language)
@@orinotori3485 I would put the blame for the hate squarely on the haters, not on the editing. A person is responsible for the things they say, and these people constantly mistake their opinions for something important.
@@yvesmaker did you not even watch the video? They’re given a villain edit and are most likely FORCED to come back for another villain edit. Think before you tell someone else their opinion is wrong.

It’s 2022 and they just released the Allstars winner season 😭 we love a psychic queen
This gave me so much anxiety and I’m not even a drag queen

ABSOLUTELY THE SAME
One thing seems abundantly clear after hearing all this: Drag Race and World of Wonder needs more outside competition. They are acting more and more like a monopolist for drag entertainment and that is never a good thing for quality nor contract conditions.
!!!!! THIIISSS! This is what my friends and I have been saying for ages, we need far more drag platforms and content (competition-style or not) that RESPECT the performers and can give them the opportunity for the same degree of success.
I agree! We have dragula but its no where near the level of views and acclaim as drag race. I want a show with afab queens or drag kings. I want a show thats not a competition but a variety show where we just get to see performances. Bitch puddings digital drag was my dream show and i tuned in every week.
Suddenly Rupauls Drag Race UK sounds so much nicer even though they only win badges and a TV show 😬 can't imagine the BBC doing all that
Certainly puts a different vibe on this thing knowing they are Required to be there, rather than Choosing to be there
Jeez. I didn't even sign that much away when I joined the Army, and I was _literally_ government property.
In words of the one and only Jasmine "The Jush" Masters: "RuPaul's Drag Race has fucked up drag"
yeah because before drag race we would see queens in tom ford and music videos lol
@@yvesmaker nobody doubts that Drag Race has elevated drag into mainstream culture and what a tremendous achievement that is. However World of Wonder and RuPaul are increasingly acting like a control hungry monopolist on all drag entertainment and that is never a good thing. They need more serious competition on the market.

Pretty ironic that drag race seems more interested in you selling your soul to them than the actual drag horror show.
Lmaoooo
What do u mean by selling ur soul?
@@G.tuness the queens basically have to give away their freedom of speech and other rights to be on the show
After realising what these queens have to give up, I finally understand why rupaul says lip sync for your life
Dela was smart AF. She didn’t technically quit and break contract. She was voted off like all the other girls that season. She just voted herself off. So she should have been able to keep all the money and prizes she won. Granted she could have had a 100,000 dollars (let’s be honest)
I doubt that they let that fly lol. Very much doubt she got any of that money
@@LennyCartwright I think they make a good a point and if they didn’t give her the money she probably would’ve sued and would definitely be able to win. Although if it ever went down to that they would probably settle.
And that moment may have been scripted as well. We’ll never know thanks to confidentiality agreements.
