An added advantage of international seasons not judged by people with previous RPDR work (either as judges or contestants) is that they judge the queens like a FIRST season of a series should be judged and not as if it was an AllStars or a season 14, which is what RuPaul and Michelle are constantly doing. España doesn't just have judges who get the references without simplifying them, they judge (at least, so far) with the consideration one would have in a first season of a show. Not all their choices are agreed on by fans entirely, but they are less harsh with unfair basis. That thing of humiliating a queen on stage for a bad wig in a performance or a dress from the rack when it's season 1 or 2 of a series and was filmed in the midst of a pandemic during which queens lost a lot of resources, or of telling a queen "we've seen this many times before" in an unconventional materials challenge when they're referring to a series in other countries for other audiences, don't sit well with me.

@@lucyjane3803 the 'dolls' or badges from jam were available in the UK, too. I never had a badge, but I did have a doll. I was a child, though. It was the 60s. Society was not as enlightened and as aware as it is now. Even through the 90s and 2000s it wasn't.
Karen was a CHILD when she had her collection. And she, like many of us children, was completely unaware of their significance. If you live in a society where this is accepted and don't know any different because this is your world, then you are not going to be aware of it until you mature, grow, learn of things outside your own sphere. Plus, we need to stop looking at past mistakes (past mistakes not including things from 2019, which is when the other Queen last did blackface), through the prism of today's enlightened and hopefully improved outlook. We also need to accept that every single white person in the world has experienced a moment or more of racism in their lives, subconscious or not, intentional or not. The white privilege runs deep and has been part of white society for centuries. Conditioning like that has affected each and every one of us in one way or another. We need to forgive our own forays into it - however minor or unintended - before we start judging others who have done the same.
Karen recognised in 2010 or 2012 that her collection - accrued when she was a child, remember - and the tattoo she had of her favourite doll was wrong. She immediately threw her entire collection away and had her tattoo covered. This was 9 years ago. And she has apologised both then and more recently (because she knew it would come to light during the show) so that the public were made aware of it.
Frankly, as a fellow owner of one of those dolls as a child, and someone who has for years been vocal about racism against indigenous peoples in other countries (mainly Native Americans because I became well read on that topic back in the 80s), and people of colour, not to mention the LGBTQ community, I hope I am doing enough to make up for something that I had - innocently, unknowingly - which was racist. And Karen seems to have been trying to do the same.
As a white person, I am not going to judge. It is not up to me. But what kind of society are we looking for if someone who previously made an honest mistake about something that is now seen as racist (quite rightly), is never forgiven despite trying to make amends? She didn't kill anyone. She didn't harm anyone physically. She came to understand it was wrong and turned her back on it.
As human beings, we are none of us perfect. And we all have things in our past that we are sorry for, should we never be forgiven for it? Should we be pariahs for life despite trying to make amends? That's not very compassionate. Nor is it a good look.
As for Scarlet, I honestly don't know. The apology seemed scripted, forced, and it was obviously over-produced. But if she has truly turned her back on racism (which she was still engaging in in 2019 despite being told by various people that it was wrong), then that is a Good Thing. I hope she is. Because she is talented, no doubt. But she needs to rely on talent and not blackface. Because eventually, that will kill her career.

Congratulations on growing and learning and changing for the better. Genuinely, it is not an easy thing to do. But it's disingenuous to act like NOBODY knew it was wrong at the time. Our voices just were not being heard. And frankly a good chunk still don't listen when we point out racism today.
Take Jojo's elimination for example. They sent the indigenous queen home on a pay-to-win challenge (having the best gown ain't cheap tidda). The Indigenous queen. In a country where indigenous people have been systemically disenfranchised for decades resulting in rampant inequality in every arena from social wellbeing, health, education, employment and (most relevant to this situation:) financial stability.

I'm not forgiving Karen. I'm not forgiving Scarlet. Actions need to be consistent, before they truly indicate change. Apologies right before going on national TV don't indicate that they won't backslide in a month or a year or five years. Not that it matters, they have plenty of non-indigenous people falling all over themselves to forgive you on my behalf anyway. Like Rupaul herself. @@evangelinebosanquet5073 what is it that you want Karen to do, exactly? And how do you know she has not tried to make amends? I get what you are saying although as a white person it is impossible for me to relate. Certainly, all these things were wrong. But society - or white society at least - had not acknowledged or had ignored them. And growing up in that white society, being indoctrinated by centuries of white privilege, and not being taught anything of this at school because it simply wasn't on the curriculum, children (which is what I was at the time, what Karen was when she collected these dolls) were unaware because they were not taught any different. By anyone.
Of course it was wrong; everyone should be equal. Indigenous people everywhere are treated abominably and have been for decades. And still are, despite our supposedly enlightened times and the knowledge we now all possess and which is everywhere. I don't know how we combat that except adding our own white voices to those who are being oppressed to try to bring about change - in attitudes, in laws, in every way. I see so much denial of racism online. I want to scream at these people. But doing that doesn't help. We need to educate, calmly (although I don't feel calm. And I am not oppressed. The level of anger that exists in indigenous communities must be immense). And I speak of ALL indigenous communities here, Plus people of colour in other countries.
I don't know if Karen has made reparations or amends. Maybe she has been doing and still is. DR is a microcosm of society and issues. If the producers don't wish to broadcast something they won't. It's possible the dolls etc were addressed, along with what she has done since, but it didn't fit the narrative.
Maybe ask her herself what she has done, if there is anything she can think of to make reparations so she can reflect if she has not done so.
Society has a long, long, long way to go. In every country. Not only toward indigenous people, either, but to all those who are treated badly or face prejudice simply for who they are. Mankind needs to evolve, not regress, which is what seems to be happening. I sometimes despair when I look at the world.

As an Australian its easy to feel let down by the production, it just felt like a bunch of yanks had descended to judge queens with little to no knowledge of the local culture. Getting them to market a yeast extract really makes Australians feel seen apparently. It didn't surprise me when Ru and Michelle didn't get any of the references presented. I feel as if it would be best if there wasn't a second season, and we came up with something distinctly antipodean instead. So in the end, Ru Paul's Drag Race Down Under gets a big 'yeah, nah' from me.

i don't think you can blame it on cultural differences; a lot of references and humour goes over their heads on the british leg of the show too, but that hasn't affected (at least not in a big way) the quality of the show or the fans' opinions of it. it definitely has its own issues (due to it being on the bbc, they're not allowed to award any prizes for example) but the australian leg of the show can really can only be blamed on favouritism & MAJOR production errors. the way they were casted in the first place was the first of several dozen red flags lol. no care whatsoever was put into crafting this season which is a huge shame

Bring on RPDRDU Season 2… just with a few small changes: no Covid-related shenanigans, no short lead time, no questionable audio and editing, no prerecorded “crosses” to guests, no overproduction, no hand-picked queens, and last but not least - for the love of god, NO RUPAUL OR MICHELLE VISAGE ON THE JUDGING PANEL! Seriously! Hosting and judging an international edition of your own franchise and then constantly claiming not to understand cultural references isn’t just lazy, it’s downright disrespectful. Stick with Rhys, bring in Courtney as main host (*so* not gonna happen but it would be sickening!), and then a rotating roster of the many Australian artists who’d be a perfect fit for a RPDR guest judge gig! Those ingredients would make for a truly engaging season of Down Under.

The season really was a victim of the pandemic. Its sudden move to NZ, meant the guest judges couldn’t appear in person (hence the awkward prerecorded ‘crosses’). I think it also prevented the first two eliminated queens being offered a chance to return … because this was filmed before the Australia - New Zealand travel bubble, they would have already been back in Australia, and would have had to quarantine for two weeks to be able to return to the show in Auckland.
As others have said, the judging panel really needed more Aussie and Kiwi representation (part of Drag Race Espana’s success) to appreciate the local references … if only Ru could get over her grudges and allow Courtney Act to be chief judge. 🙏

Art Simone was the second queen eliminated, not the third. So it wasn’t the two first eliminated queens that couldn’t come back as they’d already left and so would need to quarantine, it was the first and third queens who “couldn’t” come back. Not saying it wasn’t covid related, maybe Art stayed in NZ after instead of returning home like the others but in most past episodes when the queens are eliminated and there’s a redemption episode planned they’re not sent home, they have to stay in seclusion at the hotel. The different structure, different method of judging, the fact they filmed over months rather than a couple of weeks so the queens could actually take on the feedback from judges and do something to implement it rather than still being rushed and stuck with what's already brought and made, more varied challenges (some quite leftfield) and then got to show off all their creative skills if they made the finale by putting on their own show was excellent. Only issues were overly heavy-handed product placement, often of insane beauty products and surgeries (giving a queen surgical procedures as a prize?! what!?), the replacement of the pit crew with models/contestants from another show, Art being gone to judge that other show one episode, and sub-par subtitles (thankfully a dedicated person did their own subtitles that also went to the effort of explaining cultural references).

How did Drag Race Holland score lower than Down Under??? The looks in DRH were so much better and the personalities and performances too. I understand it might be the language and culture barrier (I am a dutch speaker) but still..

The lipsyncs were bad and the challenges were predictable. That said, I'm shocked that season 7, 11, and AS1 weren't below both.

This season was a joke. I was already wish washy with it, but when I heard that Scarlet got a pass I gave up on it completely. It irks me so much how a person with a racist past wasn't even edited out like Sherry Pie or yelled at like Joe Black..Make it make sense

Right? Joe Black was literally SCREAMED at for being poor, in the middle of a pandemic. I haven't enjoyed Ru at all in recent seasons - not in touch with reality.

Did you hear about the issues with UK season 3? Willam was in London during filming and got the dish from the industry there, she says the filming schedule was so far behind they forced the S3 queens to film one episode PER DAY without breaks, and pushed them so hard the mental health coordinator from the BBC quit and said they would never work with RPDRUK again.

I love the beginning eulogy reference of Cynthia Lee Fontaine in Untucked when Eureka broke that chair😂❤️

I stopped watching after they dragged Elektra to the bottom two for the third time...ridiculous

I’m wondering if the racist energy steaming of this season is predominantly due to the down under production team and their own internal bias and racism in editing and storyline choices.
