The drag scene is no better or worse in Spain than it is down under, but the production of DRDU interferes so unnecessarily compared to some other international seasons that it makes it that much less enjoyable. rewatching it, Art returning was literally just like 'she is here to compete and have fun she can't win anything' but that still doesn't sit great cause it wasn't given a purpose or a reason. She didn't have to fight to get back in, it was like the producers realized they 'made a mistake' cutting her and thought they would lose ratings without her which I don't think they would have. I think Art is so talented but if UK 2 can cut Joe Black for no reason the first episode just to prove a point, then this makes no sense.

      @@PaigeIrene15… It’s Stan (Foxtel & Sky News). Racist is their default state. 😞💔
      It was not only tone deaf, it missed an opportunity for Drag Race to introduce the audience into indigenous issues in both Australia and Nee Zealand, and to highlight the differences each country has taken.
      They could’ve had Maxi, Karren, and Scarlet’s scandals revealed while the two Queens of Colour were there to discuss it too.
      Instead the Queen that championed indigenous land rights was booted.
      And the Queen that called bullshit on Queens profiting on racism got booted.
      Sending the signal to the other queens what would happen if they did the same.
      They can argue those eliminations were deserved, but nothing happens without the producers making it happen. They made the choice they wanted to make and made sure they had the footage to justify it in editing.
      I was so angry when it happened, and I really hope next season is better, but I fear it won’t be. 😞🤞

    Don't think you meant anything by it, but strange that you didn't mention Pomara Fifth being Maori too. First Maori queen on the show and one of the very few polynesian reps in both seasons. At least it was on screen in the subtitles I suppose.
    Since she is aboriginal as well as Maori on top of being an aussie queen, I hope they give equal spotlight to her aboriginal and Maori sides. I have a feeling they might lean in on her aussie side more, but we will have to wait and see.

  • @tegztegz
    @tegztegz Před 2 lety +12

    Someone else mentioned they thought not mentioning the Māori rep on this cast might be Bussy avoiding trying to pronounce the word. But Bussy, and lovely American viewers, in my experience as a Kiwi who is lucky to be studying Māori culture and language, if you try and fail, as long as you're doing your best to learn and respect pronunciation, and your mispronounciations aren't coming from a place of laziness or disrespect, then it's okay to make mistakes with it as part of the learning process, if you keep trying. So do try! Google can help you with it or hell, just look for Taika Waititi talking about that aspect of his heritage :).
    I hope it comes up in the show that there's no measure of ~percentage~ when it comes to being Māori too. I think it's so beautiful that the Māori worldview doesn't divide anyone's cultural identity into parts... like there is no such thing as being only "half" or 1/8th Māori, or what have you, and being Māori doesn't expunge any other cultural heritage and identity you have either, if anything there is an underlying lesson to embrace all aspects of your ancestry and what makes you who you are. I just think that's really cool.

    See this is why I don't get the whole cultural appropriation thing anymore. I can't speak for African American culture since I am Asian so I won't go there, but I can definitely speak for Asian and Asian American culture. As a Taiwanese American who was born in the US, went back to Taiwan till 6th grade, went to high school and college in the US, and now back living in Taiwan again for about 7 years, I never found the "inappropriateness" of people from other race wearing traditional clothing from my culture. As long as they come from a place of appreciation, such as wearing the garment or hairstyle because people think it's pretty and beautiful, or even making a bit of a joke about the culture is completely fine with me. There are lines you cannot cross yes, but 90% of it I don't think it's that serious. This just reminds me of the whole thing about how in the anime community many racist fans would bash on black cosplayers because "it's a Japanese thing", which doesn't make sense at all.
    But I've never seen what Hannah Conda actually did, so maybe she did cross the line. But in a general sense, most cases I've seen that people say "IT'S INAPPROPRIATE TO ASIANS!", I just never really thought of it that way. Honestly a lot of the time the ones who is making the accusation aren't even Asian to begin with!

      Australia has a long and dicey history with a lot of countries in Asia. We’re close now and have very large immigrant populations that are from Asia, but it hasn’t always been that way. It’s hard to explain in one comment but, i do understand where she’s coming from. Don’t forget Australia and America are extremely different places. We don’t have the same history, nor the same understanding of cultural sensitivities.

    • @AmoriMoori
      @AmoriMoori Před 2 lety +26

      It’s definitely more of an American thing. For example a lot of Black Africans don’t mind non-Black people wearing braids compared to Black Americans. and same with Asians and non-Asians trying their culture. The occasions it would be inappropriate are when they’re wearing it as mockery or wearing something that’s sacred or for traditions and special occasions as a costume without knowing the meaning. This is coming from someone who’s African and Asian. But you also can’t invalidate how BIPOC Americans view culture appropriation because some Black Americans can’t wear braids and locs to work or have their natural hair without being asked to straighten it so it’s understandable for them to get frustrated when white people adopt Black hairstyles and it’s seen as cool and stylish.

    • @snr0n
      @snr0n Před 2 lety +20

      @@LionStaringAuraKingdom It was only 25 years ago that a new Australian far-right party was founded on an initial platform that was very candidly all about stopping "the Asian invasion", by which they just meant Asian people existing here in any capacity. That policy won them enough votes to make them the most successful third party in the nation's history. That party still holds a bunch of seats today, and while their public policies have shifted focus to islamophobia, I doubt the views of their voter base have changed all that much. I've heard enough stories from Asian friends and personally seen enough people who still feel very comfortable being casually racist, so I can certainly understand people living within that context not being okay with others treating their culture like a costume, regardless of intent.

    Aussie here, and Drag Race podcast host so YIKES that makes the clouds of the DU series a lot more complicated for me - BUT I just wanted to say Bussy phrased the whole Hannah Conda thing very well. I agreed with the sentiment and concluding statement. It’s a shame far too many loud righteous stans will still spend the rest of Hannah’s drag career calling her a racist because it’ll make them look like better people because they are anti-racist. When the Scarlett thing happened I hoped she would try harder to make reperations for her horrific mistakes. It’s clear she didn’t. And kinda quit drag over it. And drag is something Scarlett was - whether you like it or not - very good at (when she wasn’t committing racist behaviour 😡) so I can’t imagine it would have been easy for her to go through, but the problem is… she can’t cry foul or “cancellation” when she didn’t explore more avenues to make reperations and instead she just gave up. Was it cause she couldn’t be bothered? Was it cause the fandom made it clear there was nothing she could do to change their perception of her? Who knows. What we do know is Hannah is her own person with her own mistakes and her own journey to do better is probabaly still ongoing.
    And above all else… as an Aussie who not just loves a TV show about drag but loves drag in life, in art and entertainment and the importance of queer culture that has had the greatest influence on my life as a sheltered kid who thought being queer meant I was screwed up my whole life - I vehemently refuse to let a TV show fandom paint a damaging brush across Australian drag because this TV show has been produced horribly. Periodt. Do your research. Know your history. Drag in Australian culture has its dark moments like all drag cultures have had but I refuse to let people imply it is lesser than other countries simply because World of Wonder can’t manage to produce a show that represents Down Under drag with the equal amount of energy it gives the US & even the UK. Damn I’m tired of typing. Xx

    From memory:
    Minnie Cooper, aside from Etcetera was one of three Sydney queens I wished got on Drag Race. She’s Sydney drag royalty and I’m so glad she has the platform.
    Hannah Conda: Professional queen, hardworking, reliable, consistent, talented but don’t remember much specifically. I’m not sure if they’re on good terms but I’m pretty sure she worked a lot with Coco Jumbo, or at least at the same club. I’m pretty sure they did a lot of shows together but that’s just from my vague and failing memory lmao
    Faux Fur: Really didn’t expect her to be cast especially because the Asian representation is so limited. Back in the day she was kinda ratchet drag, unpolished. But I remember her being very nice and entertaining, just not drag race level. But this was years ago so she might be way more polished and experienced now. I hope she breaks the ‘Asian queens always go home early’ curse.
    Good luck to all the queens and it must be nice having no pressure to do a better job than the previous season ☠️☠️

    Also the exaggerated Aussie/NZ accent queens here in general have give, “throw a snag on the barbie and chuck us a VB mate” while gay kind of vibe.. which if you’re not Aussie/NZ can be kind of cringy just like the drag names that are always just two words to make a pun… it’s all just a bit much (because we just don’t talk like that).
    The US just do this show best, also I don’t get into Holland much because I just don’t get their jokes or pop culture so it’s not as entertaining.
