  • LDS Smile recently published a post called, "I'm Tired of the Church Constantly Being Attacked", which was shared pretty widely around the Mormon internet sphere. We decided to read the post and give our responses to it! We hope you enjoy it and aren't offended by anything we say IT'S HARD TO MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY. Love you all.

I served in the northern Philippines, when I first got there I told my senior comp that since we were low on new investigators that we should literally go from door to door in our area. I quickly learned that our mission president, under orders from Salt Lake, had told the missionaries NOT to teach everyone. The reason being, the church didn’t want poor people flooding in and taking advantage of the welfare programs. So we were to teach poor people, should they seek us out, but we were approach more rich areas so that they could establish a base of people to support the welfare program there.

Even worse off, there are always people under the bridge part of the City Creek Mall that are homeless (usually due to a disability) and are in great need of help. But the church will never actually help them.

I definitely agree with what Sam said about being able to help more outside the church. My grandpa got sick and my parents texted me to tell me to pray for him. And it got me thinking like, how often do people who have a genuine desire to help just throw in a couple words over their mac and cheese and move on, ya know? How much more good could be done if people who wanted to help would do something tangible instead of some well-meaning thoughts? Cause ultimately, my cousins and I praying isn't gonna do anything about pneumonia or whatever it was. How often do we all take the easy way out of doing good ya know? Anyway sorry for the rant lol

Yeah I'm sorry but I can't say that most of the Mormons I know are above average in kindness. Some of the shittiest people I've met have been Mormon. They tend to be friendly at first, but when the right topic comes up, you realize what a hateful person they actually are. The Mormons I have met are kinder than the average person are just good people at their core, and they're usually the ones that go against the grain, like the pro-LGBT ones that actually are actually doing something to mend the damage that the church has done to the community.

My little brother was a full tithe payer for years. He was having a real hard time making ends meet with four kids, but "knew" that if he kept paying tithing it would work out. But it didn't. So he went to his bishop, who told him to pray about it. My brother did that, and felt that he had an answer: if the church would help him with his power bill, he could continue paying tithing, and still be able to pay his bills. He went to the bishop, and told him he needed help with this power bill. The bishop said "No, we can't do that." That was the beginning of the end for my brother, who served a full time mission in Japan. Such a load of crap. This church sucks.

One of the things I hated most about my mission is that we had to request specific permission from our Mission President before we engaged in any service project. We had to justify how it would help our 'numbers' meaning it had to help us work towards baptisms. No altruistic service.

The author of the article is using the same arguments that abusive spouses use:Husband: "You're not allowed to criticize me! Look at all the good I do! So what if I cheat on you repeatedly? So what if I molest the kids every once in a while? So what if I constantly verbally abuse you and do everything I can to make you feel like you're not good enough? So what if I hit you a few times? You got better, didn't you? Stop finding fault with me! I provide a roof over your head! I take care of the kids! I give you food! I gave you flowers after I hit you once!"Wife: "Actually, I take care of the kids, and I purchase and cook the food, and I clean the house. I don't deny the work you do at the office, but you're taking way more than your share of credit--"Husband: "Shut up! If you leave me, you will suffer! You'll never find anyone better! I am your one true soulmate! You need me!"Wife: "That's not true. There are plenty of other husbands who don't cheat, molest, or hit. There are plenty of husbands who admit when they make mistakes, and make changes instead of getting defensive. There are plenty of men who are less boring, and probably a lot better in bed. Let's be honest, you outlandishly exaggerate your size and your performance. You always brag about how much money you make. I won't deny that you are a rich man. But you are stingy and selfish. For all you take in, you give back an inexcusably small amount. I am not looking for a perfect husband, but I know that most of the potential husbands out there are better and more generous than you. Hell, I'm better off single than part of an abusive marriage. Goodbye."

I remember the flooding in High River, Alberta in 2013 and how all the wards in Calgary and the surrounding area got organized to go help everyone. I'm from High River so I went too. Everyone wore one of those blue "Mormon Helping Hands" t-shirts. Even as an active TBM it pissed me off because this opportunity to do genuine good was being used as advertising. It made me think of pharisees praying loudly in public to be seen. I didnt wear one, I just wanted to help out. The members did a lot of great volunteer work for a couple of months, but they were always advertising it. I didn't see anyone from any other church advertising like that. That is what I hate about the church's community service.

So what?! The important thing is that people got the help they needed. Do you think those folks resented the T-shirts just because it told them who was helping them? I seriously doubt it. As my mother would have said, "You need to get your head screwed on straight."

  • @xavierekrus5083

The church is not being 'attacked' any more than the leaders or members bring it on themselves. People are going to criticize it no matter what. It does need to be criticized for what it does in many aspects or the issues would never be brought to light. It is better to work with the culture than against it, and unfortunately they are working against it thus having many members and people not liking it. There are people who leave after becoming disillusioned when finding the truth, especially the history of the deceased prophets who led.
While I was never Mormon, I have several who LGBT+ that were (some were returned missionaries themselves) and after researching it myself came to have a strong dislike for the religion, not the people who are members. Mormonism does teach and emphasize many good things, but is not necessarily (institution wise at least) compatible with winning longterm members with modern culture. Most of those who I have met that became baptized left within several years if not sooner. They do have a very low retention rate.

  • @edsnow1526

All the information and facts about the Mormon church's history should be brought out into the light and closely examined objectively (without spin or apologetics), so that people can make a rational decision about whether to believe its organizational truth claims. If its not true, then the church should be criticized.

I've paid 4,800 this year in tithing. 600 fast offering. I could have done a lot more, a lot! more for people I know personally instead of paying tithing. So of that money, $5 went to humanitarian aid and $4,795 went to building and maintaining buildings, printing books, and paying the general authority stipends. And that guy at general conference just says something to the effect of "the funds are managed properly." Hmm.

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
There's a difference. The pharisee's liked a crowd to show off what they were doing - and the more the merrier. The "Mormon Helping Hands" forks just arrive and get to work. No theatrics. Instead of a "see what I'm doing" attitude, there's is more of a 'how can we help". Need knows no religion.
