I was extremely involved in the church, had three callings, paid tithing (and some more), went to BYUI including alll of their LDS religion classes, mission prep class, was going to be a missionary, didn’t smoke or drink (still don’t), and I ended up finding out it was all a lie trying to prove it was true, and now I’m happily an atheist/agnostic.

@kiwibrown Logical fallacies, inconsistencies, the lds institution's attempts at rewriting church history, the changing of "unchangeable" doctrine... a huge part of it was when one of my own parent's was ready to basically disown me for deciding to get married to a latino AND they weren't mormon... if you're aware on the church's stance on skin color and the african and latin nations, you'll know there are inherently racist views that fuel their distaste for interracial marriages. I've been officially "out" for 4 years... but picking up on fallacies started when I was 14...just had to follow rules until I was moved out.

Sunday is a day of rest...unless you have any calling in the church. Then Sunday becomes the busiest day of the week. Wake up early, wrangle up the kids, get them ready for church. Go and have meetings before church, pick up investigators, sit through the block with the kids who are either falling asleep or bouncing off the walls, have meetings after the block, firesides, training, interviews, collecting offerings, taking people the sacrament, stake or ward choir...
By the time you're done, it's usually late and time to get ready for Monday.
As an apostate, for the first time in a long time, I look forward to Sunday.
I can actually rest on Sunday, use that time to better myself by doing the things that there just wasn't time for during the week such as art or music, and basically fulfill the alleged purpose of the day.

All my family and friends were mormon. I never read or heard any arguments against the church. I was made seminary president. Then on a mormon campout I thought "what would the church look like if it wasn't true". I realized in the lack of any empirical evidence the claims were insane. • @Questioner365
    @Questioner365 Před 8 lety +15

"Understanding the doctrine leads you out of the Church?"
Does that mean the more you read the BoM the more questions you have (of why it has changed and why the church no longer follows it or the Christ within it) and the more you will then naturally seek for those answers, as Christ and Moroni COMMANDED?
Wait, aren't we commanded to not question church history, doctrine or the most recent or current leaders? Wait, that's not what Christ or Moroni taught?
Most LDS don't have the first clue about the WoW either. It is forbidden from being a commandment (D&C 89:2 - google it) and is not about just 4-don'ts at all, but is actually at it's root and reason a warning that conspiring Gadiantons will hijack thousands (not just 4) of God's wholesome herbs and foods which still work best for health and healing (Verse 4). Yet somehow we ignore that because we can't see it, at all, because all we can see is a "COMMANDMENT" of 4-don't only - a "commandment" as refined as the refined foods and medicines Christ warns are coming in verse 4???
"Doctrines of devils and commandments of men???"
A teen confessing sexual "sins" to an older man is MORE perverted than sexual sins.
You will go to hell for questioning (as Christ and Moroni commanded - it's OK, God changes His mind all the time, as Moroini said so many times - NOT).
    Don't question that...
Whoa, gotta take a break, feeling a bit lightheaded...
I guess I read the BoM a bit too much.

I was actually terrified to do the research. I had to peek just a little at a time, and then run to apologetic sites for comfort and reassurance. I really was afraid of punishment for betraying what they said was the Holy Ghost. Many years of brainwashing doesn't go away all at once. But finally I could see the truth, and the apologetic sites didn't make sense anymore. I've been out for a year and a half, and I've learned way too much to ever think about going back. Many people are now doing what I did, and their loyalty will wear down little by little as they gradually absorb the facts and the apologists can't spin it for them anymore.

The day my ex-spouse and I decided to stop going to church, we called our bishop to let him know in advance because we each had TWO callings and wanted to give him a chance to get someone else to cover so he wouldn’t be stressed. And although the mission was an experience that has helped me be successful (I’m a manager in a large corporation, and I draw on my church experience regularly in that job because the church is a large corporation) I still have nightmares about going on another mission.

I'm actually one of those people that left the church because it was "too hard". Sort of.
I first realized the church wasn't true as a kid (10-15) when I started looking up things against the church.
The reason I did this was because if it wasn't true, I wouldn't have to do the things that were "too hard".
(For example: I wouldn't have to pay 10% of my hard earned few dollars, and I wouldn't have to read the scriptures on Sunday instead of my fantasy novel)
So it can be a valid reason for people to leave the church. But, in my own experience, it's more of a naive kid's reason why. Still a good a reason though. :)

My first issue (and by far the largest issue) is the Book of Abraham and right behind that is the priesthood ban. In studying the everything around the priesthood ban that is when I discovered all the information on Brigham Young. I read them all and they are awful. And in my own personal search I did not seek out anything termed "anti-Mormon" documents. I simply went to the source documents wherever possible. It was only years later that I came across the Tanners, Mormonstories, etc. I am interested in people's core stories about how they lost their faith in Mormonism.

When I heard you read that "you shouldn't leave the church because it's hard" I agreed that this is a valid reason not to leave the church. It is really hard to leave the church, and I know people (myself included) who have stayed long after realizing it wasn't true because leaving was so hard. It's okay if someone isn't ready to take that step. But then I realized that he meant that you shouldn't leave because STAYING is hard. That's a whole different can of worms. And also a totally legit reason to leave.

I would personally say the number 1 reason people leave is for digging deep into church history, not for understanding the doctrine.
(The latter, in my mind, implies that one finds the church to be in contrast with mainstream Christianity according to doctrines of the trinity, salvation by faith, etc.; these would most likely leave the church and become a mainstream Christian. I find that the majority of Mormons leave the church because of church history (polygyny & polyandry, racism toward blacks, sexism, etc.). These people are typically burnt out by religion and institutions in general and become agnostic, atheist, or spiritualist).

Daric, this tracks with my anecdotal experience -- i started questioning doctrine - i realized lds was a pay to play religious experience and are not saved by grace in the knowledge of the resurrection, as they claim -- they are jewish mysticism, still under the mosaic law --- that being said i have maintained my faith in basic Christian tenets but will never prescribe to organized religion again - am probably more aligned with buddhism than christianity at this point. looking around at most christian affiliations it's just really a ton of narcissism and not the hill I'M dying on.

Reason number 594,848 to leave the church... Brigham Young said very tall quaker looking people lived on the moon, I have the JOD in my possession and he really did say that:
“Who can tell us of the inhabitants of this little planet that shines of an evening, called the moon?... When you inquire about the inhabitants of that sphere you find that the most learned are as ignorant in regard to them as the ignorant of their fellows. So it is in regard to the inhabitants of the sun. Do you think it is inhabited? I rather think it is. Do you think there is any life there? No question of it; it was not made in vain.”
    - Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 13, p. 271
My dad had big library of LDS books because he read non-stop, believer and apologist.
But why would you want to stay in the church after you've read that? The JOD is madness.

We ran into the problem of ward boundaries when I was growing up. Our ward was enormously toxic and unhealthy. I ended up going to the other one that met in the chapel, which was far, far better, and had all the good people in town (literally). I ignored policy. My parents and I also spent time in the Spanish speaking branch two towns over for their stake mission. When it was over, they wanted us to go back to that toxic ward, but we all refused. That branch (all Hispanic converts) was literally the best ward/branch any of us had seen. Far less Mormon brainwashing and idiocy, just good people trying their best (despite being Mormon). I still miss them. Their parties were AWESOME!!
Yeah their rules are atrocious at times. Especially when there are literally BAD people in the ward you're forced to attend.

Sara K this is a corporation with strict guidelines, they won't be all willy-nilly with their record keeping. They are basically keeping a close eye on their assets and keep them exactly where they want them to control them. If people could bounce around they wouldn't be able to keep teachers, janitors and clerks where they want them. It's a closed system.

@@cherylstokes636 I never thought about it this way. The Catholic church doesn't demand tithing. Neither do most Protestant churches, but the ones that do don't demand that you attend at a particular parish.

My young friends, I have learned, especially from members who were doubters from the beginning, until you have gained a witness of the truth of the gospel by the spirit of truth, any seeming reasoning against the church can affect you. But once you receive your testimony because the Spirit of God has revealed it to you, and you have gained an ongoing relationship with the Savior through that Spirit, then the words of Abraham Lincoln kick in. 'I never allow what I don't know to get in the way of what I do know'.

    • @filminginportland1654
      @filminginportland1654 Před 6 lety +4

Kristofer Hemingway this is nonsense and dismisses the incredibly important, genuine reasons why people leave. You ignore their stories and experiences, the tremendous pain they've felt _from the church_ , it's policies, and how people around them interpret them. Fact is, most ex-Mormons were devout, active members who _thought they did_ have testimonies. But people in every religion has spiritual experiences, not just Mormonism. And people have them outside of religion, too.
One example is LGBT members. Of which, suicide is a leading cause of death currently for Utah youth. Great job, guys! In your strong arming LGBT policies, you're causing record breaking suicides among your children. As statistics show, you have several (of any age) LGBT people in every ward, silently suffering all the insults and name calling, struggling to keep the commandments and wondering why everybody hates them. The guilt, shame, etc over something they never asked for or wanted, and something that _will not go away_ , no matter how "valiant" you are.
There are serious, _legitimate_ reasons people leave. It's not for a lack of trying or faith. And most of them have severe, severe emotional distress upon discovering the whole thing isn't even true. Most DID NOT want to come to this conclusion.
So keep repeating myths about this topic, you'll never get to the truth of the matter.

i'm sorry about your cat, but it's good to see you're getting on. the best thing to do is get another pet, i've been told. as for myself i carry everything inside me and can't move on not for at least 10 years.
mormon apologetics i think i could write it down without listening to a word, but maybe i can follow your lead and have a chuckle at their expense, and maybe laugh at myself too.
mormon doctrine: what is it? no body knows. nobody in the whole world knows what mormon doctrine is. but a million mormons are set to tell me that i don't know mormon doctrine and i don't understand it and i misquote it. they also tell sandra tanner she doesn't know mormon doctrine and she's been studying it for 50 years.
in 1857 the mormons surrounded a wagon train and massacred 120 men women and children. what doctrine were they following? i hesitate to ask.
blood atonement: is it really weird? no not really. they should re-institute fast and testimony/blood atonement sunday. 5 people were blood atoned today after fast and testimony meeting.
starting a church for profit: are you referring to the bank fraud/land speculation/counterfeiting/being supported by the church schemes? i think that falls under the catagory of speaking evil of the lord's anointed. see blood atonement above.
tithing: jewish farmers were the only ones who paid tithing. jesus did not pay tithing because he was a carpenter. doesn't the mormon church have enough faith in the scriptures, to follow them accurately? where is blood atonement when they really need it?
well zelphs, i feel much better now. i just don't know should i laugh or cry?
