Literally cried and knelt till I bruised my knees looking for answers. Nothing, NOTHING was worse than the feeling of receiving nothing from a Heavenly Father I truly believed loved me.
Also CAN WE JUST ACKNOWLEDGE how ridiculously the word “blessings” is thrown around? When I went on a mission, I had my bishop, stake president, and lots of other people promising me and my non-member family all these blessings of me leaving.
While I was gone, my mom’s illness worsened, my brother who had gotten clean from drugs went back on them and was living on the streets, my grandma (basically my best friend) who I lived with for a time passed away, and I got very ill for about 6 months of my mission including stomach ulcers and severe depression(which of course they put me on meds for that I’m still stuck on.) My mission president told me I shouldn’t go home because I just couldn’t yet see the blessings and I just needed to have more faith. That feeling sad about my grandmother were feelings coming from Satan and I needed to just commit to being a missionary. (?) Bullshit. It’s all bullshit. I regret every single day not coming back to say goodbye to my grandma when she was asking for me.
These are things I will never get back from the church.

I fairly recently left the church and got my records removed, and this channel has helped me deal with my anger and feelings of betrayal in a healthier way. I don’t have any exmormon friends who were TBM’s at some point, like I was- so I feel very alone in my anger and feelings of betrayal. Having been a father raising my sons, I have never pulled away from my sons even when I was peed on, pooped on, thrown up on, when they had temper tantrums and said they hated me, didn’t listen to me or did the exact opposite of what I said, In fact all of these actions brought me ever closer to my sons. A good father does not ignore his children even when they misbehave. I lost my testimony at age 50 and kept going to church till age 59, listening to the same dogma on a weekly basis which I knew in my hart was not true caused to be inactive. The idea that god is so shallow that he cuts his ties and blessings just because his children disagree with him goes against the grain of what it means to be a good father.

I realize I’m commenting on a 3 year old video, but what can I say, I’m doing a Zelph deep dive. 😂
In some ways this totally skewed perspective from Meridian makes sense. There is such a huge taboo against members telling each other about their doubts that most of the time, people just leave without telling their entire ward why. I know in my case, even my close friends at church didn’t want to hear my reasons. The result is that they see these behaviors that occur AFTER leaving the church: no longer attending, breaking commandments like the WoW, not reading the scriptures - and assume those actions are what led us out, rather than the natural aftermath of not believing anymore.

I read the BOM three times. Could NEVER bare testimony to its validity. The thing that pulled me away was being treated like crap because I am autistic and was not at the same mental and maturity stage as everyone else in my age group. I was literally kicked out of my favorite Sunday school class because I was two years older than everyone. By kicked out, I was not just simply asked to leave, the teacher wouldn't even let me into the fucking class! When I was 22, I came out as transgender and began to socially transition, THAT is when things got BAD. I was shunned by ward members, temple recommend taken away several times for truly ridiculous reasons. Disrespected by everyone. But the worst part is what everyone would tell me about my eternal gender and all that shit. I felt completely worthless. Like my being born was a mistake. I tried to kill myself twice before I finally was able to realize what this cult was doing to me. I'm SO GRATEFUL I found people who could help me leave!

1: I was raised in it but it wasn't until the last few years before I left that I got really really good at reading my scriptures every single day and actually reading the book of mormon cover to cover multiple times. My book of mormon study was at its peak when I left.
2.never went through the temple but I had a list of my baptismal covenants that I read almost every day for the last year or so before I left.
    3. I didn't listen to anyone who had left the church till after I already did
    4. I have never prayed harder in my life for God to help me be faithful then I did for the months leading up to me leaving the church.
    5. I attended church even after I left at first
    6. I listened to general conference the most attentively I had ever done in my life for the last 2 or so years leading to my leaving plus reading old conference talks regularly throughout the year. I even listened to conference after working a 12 hour night shift knowing I had to work another one the following night and I STAYED AWAKE. I also listened to conference after leaving and to this day will read certain conference talks.
    7. Eh sort of... I liked other religions and science and they didn't fit in the mormon box. But when I left, I left because I wanted to follow what I felt was gods will for me... so even though I was terrified of my family's reaction, I "feared" what I believed to be God more.
    8. I have never been more grateful to "god" and saw better the blessings in my life then the day I realized I needed to leave.

Since I gave up on it back in 2007, there has been quite a surge in Former TBM Mormons speaking out ( as you know). It's quite incredible.
One of my missionaries from that time has since revealed his own disbelief in it. He was the most intelligent one I came across. The missionaries were generally just good kids, though a bit juvenile and naive as to the real LDS history.

    1. I still read the Book of Mormon at times, often when I read lord of the rings or king of thrones. An average fiction with some merit.
    2. Fuck covenants. ‘Hey kids, make promises you don’t understand and most importantly, make bold assertions that we pressure you into, infront of your peers’
    3. Yes. I love listening to ex Mormons. Support when leaving cults can be life saving. It’s revealing that the church doesn’t want you to be supported through a transition that can be so traumatic that many commit suicide. True colours show when you walk out the door of organisations. No ‘thank you for your service of many years and hundreds of thousands of dollars’.
    4. Replacing praying with simple breathing and meditation was super amazing for me. Realising that I felt better by meditating without saying anything in my mind, was a great moment. The fear driven internal dialogue that I seemed to regurgitate in the simple process of prayers, talking to an invisible person that can smite you down has so much harmful consequences.
    5. I always hated going to church. Boring AF. Judgey and self
righteous old people. Gossip clubs. Dressing up excuse for some people.
    6. Hypnotic misogynistic culty slow speaking old dudes. I miss the music
    though.
    7. Intellectual dishonesty is what the Mormon church is on. If you can say you know something that you don’t know, they’ve got you. Fear merchants. Fucking disgusting how the church promotes ignorance over solid scientific findings and lieing to protect the church.
    8. Like slave owners that made their slaves sing and dance to show their gratitude for getting fed and clothed. Stockholm syndrome is real. Constructed gratitude is one of the most manipulative tools with abusers.
The church is getting unravelled quickly. It’s going down. Science is beautiful.
    8/8 for me.

    Lets see how I did:
    1. They stop reading the Book of Mormon. No, at the time I was reading it as much as ever, which is to say, too much.
    2. They forget their covenants. No, I kept those until after I disbelieved.
    3. They listen to those who have left the Church. Nope. I literally knew just two people who had left the church and I never even talked to them. I didn't even read what ex-Mormons wrote at that time.
    4. They cease praying to stay strong and faithful. No- this one is the opposite of correct. I always prayed when I was a member, and prayed often, but I prayed more than ever when I was losing my faith. In fact, I am awarding this negative one point.
    5. They stop going to Church. Nope. Not until after I stopped believing did I stop going to church.
    6. They don’t listen to General Conference. No. I always listened to conference, and then later read it over again.
    7. They listen to the philosophies of men above the teachings of the prophets. Nope. I put it all together for myself that the teachings of the prophets were self-contradictory.
    8. They fail to acknowledge the Lord’s blessings. Can't say this one is true, because I always was appreciative of the blessings I had and still have. I no longer attribute these things to a deity, but I certainly did at the time that I lost my faith.

This was posted years ago. But I wanted to chime in. I made the decision to leave the LDS Church 6 months ago. It was however two years in the making: studying, discussing, praying, searching, and struggling.
You know what finally did me in? My understanding of the Mormon doctrine. I grew to love the concept of real and true charity as taught in Moroni and Ecclesiastes. I loved the ideas of what the Articles of Faith taught. The fact is, the "Priesthood leaders" of the Church don't even follow the doctrine of D&C 121, to say the very least. Why would I continue being actively engaged in a corporation disguised as a church that acts against its own scripture or teachings? That actively keeps men in power that use their ecclesiastical authority to abuse Church members? That actively ask members to endanger themselves during a pandemic so that they don't have to spend any amount of their billions on employing insured and professional custodians?
It was the Church leaders' actions and words that lead me out, especially with their responses on sexual abuse reports this summer. It definitely was not this "Satan" dude, unless we can agree that the leadership of the Church practices evil ways.

I love the term "falling away". In my misspent youth we used the phrase "drifting away". However, as my dear Uncle Ted used to say, "I didn't drift, I walked away"! The problem, of course is that the official entities of the Mormon Church (sorry Dr. Nelson, I think the term Mormon is still alright and in no way offensive) have allowed themselves to fall into the morass of rote repetition to such a point that they now believe too much in their own publicity. That is dangerous when inevitably empirical facts and events contradict the official line. Thank goodness you two approach all of this with intelligent humor.

    1 point with me.
1: Kept reading the BoM, unlike most I actually thought about things like they ask you too.
2: Kept morning covenants and would go to the temple every 2 weeks as a goal.
3: I didn’t read any anti Mormon subjects, I didn’t leave because of anything anti Mormon, it was thinking and learning science.
4: Absolutely wrong, I wanted the church to be true more than anything and I kept praying and praying and nothing happened.
5: Man, even though I made the conscious decision a year and a half ago that it wasn’t true, and I’m still going because others don’t know.
6: I listen, but now I get more frustrated than anything due to all the fallacies and teachings that actively harm.
7: Yeah, I listened and thought and learned. Hell, God is intelligence, so I used that to justify learning as much as I could. That is what drove me away I guess. I concede.
    8. Nope, kind of redundant though, wasn’t this covered by the praying. I learned that a prayer is not a prayer without thanks.

I got 0 points, woot woot, at first I was gonna say I got a point for number 7 because I have listened to actual statistics and facts that contradict the teachings of the church but then I realized that when I first had my question I searched and searched and searched the church's website, gospel library, the scriptures, read so many general conference talk and ensign articles about the subject just looking for an actual answer that made sense. I asked my seminary teacher, my bishop, my Sunday school teacher, our ward's missionaries, I read the whole book of mormon twice and doctrine and Covenants once while looking for an answer to this question, I talked to so many people in the church, watching so many sessions of general conference, just sitting there, waiting, for them to finally answer my question. It wasn't until I had done all this that I started looking elsewhere for an answer and got an answer that actually made sense.

    RE: COVENANTS:
A "covenant" is a contract...an agreement to perform as per the covenant. The 2nd party to the contract (covenant) agrees (promises) to perform their obligations under the same covenant (contract).
In my temple covenant, I agreed to do the things stipulated by the 2nd party to the contract.
Trouble came as I began to realize the the entity I made the contract with was not performing their obligations stipulated to under that covenant (agreement).
On the other hand, I was rigorously upholding MY obligations under the agreement as best I could...but began noticing that the other party was not following through with their side of the bargain.
IOW, it was clear to me that the entity that I had covenanted with was and had been for years, defaulting on their agreement.
    IOW...THEY BREACHED THE CONTRACT!!
So, I reciprocated and quit performing my obligations---and I officially renounced the contract (resigned) based on a *failure to perform* by the other party.

I stopped reading the BoM Because I knew the historical errors were too much. (And It's was Really boring after the 20th time)
Never got endowed, but did not stop going to church until i resigned.
I did listen to apostates (CES Letter, Mormon stories, and You Guys) because i was not afraid of having my views challnged.
I kept praying until the end.
I watched Conference, listened to talks until the end.
I did listen to those pesky philosophies of man (Yeah! Science!)
Towards the end, the only faith i had was in the Lord's blessings and gratitude.
So that's less than half right for them. F-!
