They way the church influences politics in Utah infuriates me. They don’t care if it’s what they people want, they only care about their agenda even if it’s extremely harmful to others.

the church kind of built up utah....it's like going to the deep south and saying "the way that evangelicals influence politics infuriates me"........or going to the inner cities and saying "the way that minorities influence politics infuriates me".....Evangelicals push their agenda, minorities push their agenda, LDS push their agenda. We all push for our agenda. Your frustration is a result of your agenda not currently winning out. You would probably feel more at home and feel less frustration in Oregon or San Francisco

I feel so extremely lucky. I was sent to a Church Psychologist at 16 when I was outed to my family. She was so amazing, she flat out told my parents that there was absolutely nothing wrong with me and perhaps they should get help for their issues. She refused to refer me to a conversion therapy practitioner and gave me local resource information. She was excommunicated at the same time I forced my own excommunication. Several of my friends from church committed suicide due to shaming from the church, including my first bf. I am so thankful that you survived the experience.

I really enjoyed this video. I did not grow up Mormon but rather Pentecostal, so just as sexually repressed. When I came out as a teenager in the 1980's, my mother took me to an exorcist! The only thing I can say about that is, if someone pesters you long enough, you will eventually vomit and they take that as a sign the demon has left your body! Kudos to you for the putting yourself out there and speaking publicly on subjects like this. I think I may binge on your videos now. Love and light to you both!

Coincidentally I just watched the three-part Vice series on gay conversion last night. It was so sad it almost made me cry; you can see the level of entrapment and misery that these people are experiencing. They say that it’s their “choice” (these are adults) but how much of a choice is it if you’ve been indoctrinated from birth and your entire social circle reinforces that these feelings are “sinful”?

At the end of the meeting, I left and didn't return for two years, and that only to see a friend give his farewell talk. My bishop hadn't even noticed that I had been gone. When I came out to my parents, I had known for several years and had a strong network of friends. GSA is a life saver (the first person I came out to, who is my best friend and also gay took me there). I was already 18, and my mom suggested I go to a religious therapist. I said no, and she can't make me go. Unlike before, where she and my dad put me through several painful processes with therapy. I care about my girlfriend too much to want to be converted at this point. My cousin wasn't so lucky and got sent. He no longer talks to his parents. The church is fucked up. Especially in Utah. I'm just glad that the community is starting to be more visible and accessible.

I think my bishop was the first person I told about being sexually abused as a child. It took me years to work up the courage to come forward and his reaction was okay but could have been better. He asked if I wanted to have counseling and I declined. Since I had "issues" with masturbation, he said that it would be good for me to not take the sacrament for a week in order to sort of get cleansed. He wasn't judgemental but the sacrament thing made no difference other than tipping off my family that something was wrong. My mom coming in the room later to ask me if I wanted to talk about why I didn't take the sacrament was sooo awkward. I couldn't even turn away from the computer to look at her. I just said that everything was fine. Bishops interviews were always an enormous source of apprehension for me.

The thing is, some people would fixate in cases like yours to say that one can change sexuality at will, and that is not the case; that's why I think we should wait for people to be unbiased enough to really understand what happened with cases like yours. When people are more accepting maybe we'd see unbiased research on how sexuality fluctuates and why.

Conversion therapy, like abortion, should be a choice that is left up to the patient and councilor. On whether that therapy has merit in your particular situation.
I have intimate knowledge of a friend who professed to benefit from conversion therapy. So, I believe an outright ban is not in the best interest of the community.
Perhaps, regulating the practice is in order, instead of a one size fits all political solution.
Lastly, nothing in psychotherapy (talk therapy) has been scientifically disproven.
Maybe, antidotally less reliable, but difficult to measure.

As a conqueror of CT, I'll ask how recent it was. Quite a lot of people claim it did them good and later recant. I am thankful that I fought it all the way and it never got a foothold.
It is a dangerous practice, and really unsafe for minors. As we let adults do things that are even more dangerous, I wouldn't have it banned, although it would seem fitting for there to be a sort of pre-warning session or two people would have to go through beforehand.
It's hard to imagine a neutral counselor coming up with such a recommendation, and the motivated counselors are the most dangerous. That may be a major sticking point; the only counselors I'd trust to provide the practice would probably hate the idea of doing so.
