Drawing a Cluttered Harbour Scene

  • This cluttered harbour scene in Scotland is packed with detail and complexity, and having never tackled a scene like this before, I decided to simplify things by putting all my focus on the line drawing and give the painting/colouring a day off. I found the exercise quite refreshing, so hopefully it might inspire you to try something similar. If you'd like to try sketching this specific scene, the reference photo and all the sketching gear I used are listed below.

      It does? That’s very nice to hear, thank you! Especially since I was up past midnight last night staring half-asleep at the computer screen still trying to finish editing this video 😅

    This is fantastic! I find it awesome how you get so detailed, yet you manage to put in just the essential to make a point. And also that 'wonky style' as you name it - I just love the looseness of it.

      Well thank you Monika, kind of you to say so ☺️ I wouldn’t even say it’s as wonky as usual, just a little bit. Glad you like it!

    Love this Duncan, oh the joys of a leaking fountain pen….. part of the excitement with them is knowing that if something goes wrong, it can get messy. I have been trying all sorts of mediums of late trying to find inspiration on how to go forward and all that I have achieved is getting frustrated and wasting materials. Well, not really a waste as at least now I know what I don’t want to do but still not sure about what I do want to do. But watching your videos always calms me down. Don’t worry about mixing things up with video length, style and medium. All your videos are well worth watching🙏

      It is hard to find the right art medium for sure, the one that clicks for you. The right style and medium seems to come to most arty people eventually, but there must be a lot of wrong turns along the way. If you can think of it not as a waste but as a necessary part of the development process, it might help lessen the frustration. Easier said than done though!
      Cheers, Donald (although Duncan is also a nice name 😉)

    Congratulations on over 500 subscribers! I’m loving this and the angle you’ve done. I’ll have to check out the community, I’ve never looked at the community on CZcams!
    Ps ooops about the pen, I’ll be interested in seeing your new one!

      Thank you 🙂 The community tab is maybe not used by as many people but it seems a useful extra feature.
      I think the pen might be fixable, not sure, but I’ll find any excuse to try a new pen 😀

      @@UrbanSketchy an often heard phrase in drawing is to ‘draw what you see not what you think it is’ so when drawing boats, I will always try to draw the point end 😉😀

    • @UrbanSketchy
      @UrbanSketchy  Před 2 lety

      Very true, it’s easy to get so absorbed into doing the drawing that you forget to look at what’s in the actual scene 😅
