I love the black and white - it seems to be a great compliment to your style of sketching

Thanks Amy. It certainly wasn’t in the plan to use this much black but good to hear you thought it worked. Always fun to experiment with new ways of doing things.

I giggled imagining you telling yourself you feel like a grown up artist on the bigger paper pad. That was so funny.
The sketch is TERRIFIC! I just love the idea of the strong contrast, yet preserving a lot of the details in the stuff in it. Compared to the cinema image that consists mainly of big blocks of black and white. But this one... boy oh boy! It is terrific (oh, repeating it...)
To me, the only thing I find it is a bit too much is the thick line contouring the tiles in front of the counter. But other than that, I think every line is spot on.
And I did expect one hanging light to be lit in your signature yellow :D But then, it is your sketch. And I doubt I would have thought of all these if I made it. I'm just sharing a penny thought.
Keep up the good work. I love your attitude and your drawings! Very inspiring!

There’s an old UK TV commercial where a kid moves from baby diapers/nappies to ones for slightly older toddlers, and he sings “I’m a big boy now”. That’s me but with a sketchbook 😄
Thanks, glad you like it. Maybe I should do more indoor scenes? Never really thought about it until trying this one. There’s too much stuff in the world to draw, I can’t keep up.
Yeah it’s hard with the brush pens not to keep drawing over everything and then ruin part/all of it. I did the same thing yesterday on the sketch for the next video (and a big block of black). Realising with black, less is probably more.
Yes, the yellow, I hear you. Keep an eye out for the next video 😉
      Cheers, Donald.

You made me laugh when you said now you are a grown up artist, Donald. I will be going to the symposium, mainly because it is only a three hour flight from Sydney. I figured it will probably be the only opportunity I will ever have to go to one. I think it was you who mentioned a while back that early bird tickets were going on sale. I found out they would be going on sale at 1700 hours local time and I was lying in wait and pounced as soon as the clock ticked over. The time on my ticket is 1701 so I think as early birds go you can’t get much earlier. I have my flight and my hotel booked so I am very happy and I want to thank you for the heads up about it. Now I am thinking O god I better get better at sketching in a hurry or all I will be doing is watching other people. I forgot to say that sketch is staggeringly good. I so enjoy watching you work and hearing your commentary. I have a challenge in mind for you but I will leave it for another time.

Drawing with the big boys and their big boy pads now 😎
That’s fantastic that you’re going. How exciting! I’m a touch jealous. Great opportunity given how close you are. It wasn’t me who mentioned the early bird tickets as I only just found out about it myself, but well done for getting in there early. I’d love to hear how it went after you’re back. And remember it’s not a competition, whatever level you’re at you’ll fit in just fine, I gather it’s all very supportive and friendly regardless of ability, which is the way it should be.
Glad you like the drawing too 😊
      Cheers, Donald.

This looks amazing. If you can figure out how to apply this to a Street scene, it could look amazing

Thanks Ali. Glad you liked it! Yeah I think there could be potential with it for street scenes, I plan to try one at the weekend. My main issue is you do lose a lot of the line work you’ve just spent ages drawing, the last thing I needed was a technique that takes even longer 😅

Love this style Donald and what a great sketch again. Can I humbly suggest for translating this style into a street scene that you study the old art of etching where everything was black and white? You may be able to adapt that etching look into your street and even landscape images. As for the gel pens, you would probably be better off getting a bottle of opaque white ink and use a dip pen to get controls over line consistency. The white lines you added really worked well and it was that stage that made me think of etching because adding white lines to separate items is often used.

Thanks Graham. Etching is something I’m aware of from ye olden days of art, but don’t know all that much about how it was done. I wonder if anyone still does it like they did back then?
I do like the gel pens for convenience, and have figured out since I filmed this that if you draw slower the ink flows more smoothly. I gather Posca pens are good for this sort of thing as well. Bottled white ink is certainly an option, maybe something to consider if I go down this route more often, I’m really just trying it out at the moment. Cheers for the suggestions.

@@UrbanSketchy I am sure someone still does traditional etching somewhere, I suppose the most common form still in use would be the Lino cuts. I still remember doing them as a youngster in primary school back in the late 50s. The tools were lethal as I remember but no one cared about health and safety back then 🤣🤣🤣. We had to make a small block with our initials inside a thin border and used them to print onto our writing books which were used with dip pens and inkwells set into our desks………. I am getting old 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

    • @UrbanSketchy
      @UrbanSketchy  Před rokem +1

Oh yes I’ve seen lino cut artwork being done on the landscape artist of the year programme, looks a lot of fun but quite a skilled activity. Might give it a go someday, change the channel to Urban Lino Cutty.
Ha, I’d happily go back to the days of ink wells and dip pens, it sounds wonderful 😄

@@grahamthompson2022 Hahaaa!!!! So funny! So you used those lethal tools and survived! :D :D :D ANd now we need warning signs on the stairs and on a pen. :D :D :D
Oh, the idea of the white ink is brilliant. I haven't yet found a pen (gel or otherwise) that would work smoothly.

@@monikozi I did indeed survive even though we drank far too much of that ink, I don’t know why🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. I have had no luck with gel pens either, I will definitely be getting some white ink, less plastic to throw away too.
