  • After weeks of drawing experiments, I settle into the next phase of my urban sketching style by trying out a drawing of a jumbled street scene in New Orleans.

    When I see that you have a new CZcams, it puts a smile on my face! I know for the next 10-20 minutes I get to watch you draw and listen to your drawing ideas!
    I like how you point out the places in your drawings that you are happy about and the other areas you might have made a different decision if you had a second chance. This helps new drawers, like myself, to understand that art is a process and a life time of lessons.
    Congratulations on the new book.

      Well that’s lovely, thanks Amy. I think looking back at the successes and failures of each drawing is quite helpful, no matter what stage you’re at. I just try to embrace the mistakes as part of the learning process, rather than getting frustrated by them. A lifetime of lessons is a good way of putting it!

    Hi Donald. Thank you for your year of CZcams content ❤ I especially enjoy to see your drawing journey. So I love to see how you practice. So if you practice with longer drawing sessions I’d love to see that (just like now) If you do some time practicing quicker sketches for a certain period I’m interested in that. For me it is so helpful to see and hear what you do to improve instead of changing what you do for CZcams. I hope you keep doing what you do

      Thank you! Yes I think you’re right, that needs to be the approach, keep the videos about what I’m trying to do to learn and improve rather than changing what I do to suit CZcams. It’s helpful to hear that, even just to know people find what I’m doing of interest. Thanks for the feedback 🙂

    Your drawing skills have always been good because they are natural. You have evolved in some of your techniques, which obviously comes from all the practice. You still have a recognisable style, which is a tremendous achievement. There is absolutely no subject you should fear drawing, just take it once step at a time as you seem to do already. I think it's brilliant want you do.

    • @UrbanSketchy
      @UrbanSketchy  Před rokem

      Thanks Mark, appreciate that. You’re right, there shouldn’t be any fear over drawing any subject, it just takes time and lots of drawing experience to get to a place where you understand how you might tackle any given subject without getting lost. There will be lots of bumps along the way but I’m looking forward to the drawings ahead of me. Thanks for the encouragement!

    I like what you are doing now. I enjoy watching you draw, and your discussion of what your thinking in the process. We are I think similar in style, thanks to you I feel much more comfortable in how I draw. I wouldn't change anything. It's a format that seems to work for you very well. Maybe mixed speed up and normal videos, or perhaps in larger pieces like this use speed up but with normal time inserted to highlight certain aspects. In the end I like it now and from the very beginning. Just keep on doing!

    • @UrbanSketchy
      @UrbanSketchy  Před rokem

      Thanks Peter, that’s great to hear you’re more comfortable in how you draw. I certainly felt in the early days that the way I naturally wanted to sketch was conflicting with what I was hearing was the “right” way to sketch. It’s very freeing when you realise you can just draw however you like.
      I will look at incorporating real-time bits when I can, I know people find that helpful. Thanks a lot.

    Congratulations on your book Donald. One of my nieces has just moved to the US with her husband and nearly 2 year old little boy. As soon as I find out where to send it I will be sending her a copy. I found an interior scene on you tube that I am attempting at the moment, only because you keep inspiring me. I’ll let you know how I get on.

      Thank you Sue. That’s very kind of you, although I should have mentioned that it is a novel for around 8-12 year olds, so their little boy might be a touch too little right now.
      That sounds fun, I’d like to try more interior scenes as well, it feels different to drawing outdoor scenes for some reason. Good luck!

    Holy guaccamole! This is terrific! Soooo much detail. But it definitely pays off!
    I agree that the foreground leaves get lost a bit in the scene and maybe leaving them un-greyed (just linework) might have been better. But I guess there have been larger global disasters. And I also know that it's easy to speak and observe when others do the work.
    As for the videos, my belief is that as long as you do what you like, you'll always have an audience. Your energy transcends the wifi. And CZcams's algorithm will do its job and find you the appropriate audience. Just enjoy what you do, and the rest will follow naturally, just like your drawing.
    You are so so right in saying that practice is what matters the most.
    I can't help, of course, but rejoyce in the lights that are on.
    Aaaaand congratulations on your book!!!! You really are amazing!
    Stay safe and keep being an inspiration!!!!

      Thank you very much 😊
      Yes, the foreground leaves were a misjudgement, should have left them out altogether. Always a treat when the very first thing you draw on the page is something you wish you hadn’t. That’s why I like to talk about the errors though, it helps to think things through afterwards and I hope is relatable to people’s own experiences of drawing and getting things wrong.
      Video-wise, I guess that makes sense to continue doing my own thing and whoever wants to watch is welcome. Just my bad luck that the algorithm takes its weekly nap every Thursday at 4pm, so it always misses my videos 😴😁
      Yes the lights are back on in the windows and they’re back for good. Or at least until my yellow pen runs out.
      Excited about the book and finally seeing it out in the wild. During lockdown while everyone was watching the world fall apart, I spent my days in my own little world writing a children’s Christmas novel. Says a lot about what’s going on in my head 😅
      Thanks and same to you 🙌

    This one is amazing. I seem to be saying that every time you put up a new drawing. That's because you are evolving and improving before our eyes. Yes, even from the last one to this one. And, yes your drawings are better for being more natural rather than deliberately wonky (although there was beauty in that whimiscal-ness as well). I think that's the patience needed the results of consistent practice of a skill. In the beginning, we may see a leap but then it we may not notice the improvement but suddenly we find ourselves at a different level: more discerning, more ready to take on different/bigger projects, ready to sit longer with our craft, etc. And, I thank you for your encouragement to be patient, keep drawing and believe the change is happening. I am one of those beginners and am not as quick to improve as many others I see so every time I hear a message like that it gives me a boost.
    As far as videos, far be it from me to give you advice. I think you are doing well. As you know, I love seeing real time drawing; it just makes me realize what it "really" takes. I know it would be impossible to have 6 hrs worth on one drawing, obviously, but perhaps just have a few sections where you slow down to real time.

    • @UrbanSketchy
      @UrbanSketchy  Před rokem

      Thank you, nice to hear this one went down well. The whimsy isn’t going away too much, I’m still drawing cars like they’ve melted and lots of wobbly lines!
      That’s a good point, I saw a big leap about 3 months after I started, then long periods when I wasn’t feeling like things were improving at all, and then it picked up again recently. It’s definitely worth persisting through the slow progress periods, you’ll see things improve for sure, you just don’t know when that will be until it happens.
      One day I’d love to do a full-length real-time tutorial for a big sketch like this, but given the work involved I think it would probably have to be as part of a course. Maybe something for further down the line if there was interest. Even adding some real-time bits to this one would have made it quite a long video, but I will keep trying to squeeze in some real-time sections if the drawing isn’t excessively long like this one. Surely they can’t all take 6 hours 😅
