  • Do the rules of drawing buildings in perspective leave you in a muddle? Me too! In this video I try drawing a highly cluttered street scene featuring a narrow sharply angled building in Tokyo, Japan, without any of the usual perspective mumbo jumbo. It also give me a chance to share my approach to dealing with mistakes, because there's plenty of those.

Thank you. Happy the subtitles are working, it seems CZcams creates its own subtitles but sometimes it takes a while to appear in the video. Glad it’s okay! Thanks.

Thinking about the laws of perspective before you draw is like thinking about the laws of gravity before you take a walk. ;)

Ha, I like that, a good way to think about it 🙂

Whoa!!! Awesome! Such a complicated scene!!! I too tend to avoid complex scenes. But at some point, a tutor presented the so-called spiral drawing. I got all excited imagining it was an actual spiral. But in fact it was something that I found so practical: start a drawing from a central item amd continue adding items you see around it. Eventually, you will have a complex scene on paper. Sort of what you did here. And it is so satisfying to see how it builds up and things fall into place.
As for the slope on the right hand... once you remove the reference, that just belongs there. Indeed it is not in the reference. But also there are other details in the reference which you left out, and the drawing is just your version inspired by the reference. I really like it with the slope.

Oh I love the sound of spiral drawing, sounds a lot of fun. Maybe I should try that sometime. As you will have gathered, I like to try new things.
Yeah you’re right about the slope, that’s a good way to look at it. I should have left the area blank (if in doubt, leave it out) but now the slope there I need to embrace it as part of the family.

@@UrbanSketchy Well, you basically are applying that concept, even if you did not label it in any way. You started in the middle, with that flat rectangle and started adding details around it. I guess there is no rule to it, other than just start in the middle and develop from there. And if there are any other rules, they are there to be broken, aren't they? Or make up your own.

That’s true, I did start in the middle with this one. Accidental spiral drawing. Probably best not to know if there are any rules to it or I’d instinctively want to do the opposite.
