This is a terrific sketch Donald. As far as I know the ‘L’ is just a shortening of ‘eLevated’ train. I am glad you have seen a change in your approach and I think it certainly is a path worth exploring. Great job 🙏

Thanks Graham. It’s not a huge change but still seemed to help me construct the scene without overthinking it too much, maybe that’s what helped.
Yes you’re right about why it’s called the “L”, I meant to say that and forgot. Cheers!

Fantastic! I think we all go in waves of ups and downs during our progress of learning. Oh and our pizza here in Chicago, ya it’s a wow good. Lol

Thank you! It’s very true, a rollercoaster for sure.
Oh you’re lucky, proper Chicago pizza will remain on my wishlist for a long time I think. In the Netflix series Somebody Feed Phil he went to Chicago and had the most amazing looking deep dish pizzas 😋 I have thought about little else ever since 😄

Thanks Wendy, that’s good you’re seeing an improvement. I’m determined to really start improving what I’m doing now, lots of practice to come, hopefully it will inspire others learning as well. Cheers, Donald.

Hi Donald, I just finished my first sketch after a few weeks of not sketching. In the middle of the drawing process I get a notification for your video and was pleased to hear that you've also recovered from an artistic rut. This sketch is beautiful, one of your best yet and I hope you continue to challenge yourself and stay inspired, Thanks for posting these videos!. 😊

Hi Ali, great to hear you’re sketching again. A wee break can definitely be a good thing, especially if it helps you come back to it with more enthusiasm again. Glad to hear you enjoyed this one, I was happy with it so I’ll see where it takes me next. Cheers, Donald.

Thanks Denise, it’s certainly nice to feel like there’s a bit of progress being made again. I’m not sure I’d be able to confidently say I was good at this until I can do it consistently well, but hopefully heading in the right direction. Cheers, Donald.

Love the picture, and your sketch (it almost seems rude to call it a sketch - it’s brilliant!). Your drawing has really come along. I’m seriously considering changing what I draw, because I’m not really getting very far, lol. I want to draw what excites me, and I think that’s the key :) I have always thought you were very talented, but I’m glad you now realise it too. Also, I’m enjoying the slight change in style. It’s all about evolution, and you’re definitely evolving!

Thanks for the positive feedback! Interestingly I just looked up the dictionary definition of “sketch” and it says “A simple quickly-made drawing that does not have many details.” So yeah, that’s not this.
I’m aiming for a subtle change, the same but different, it’s more about aiming higher and trying to draw scenes I previously might have avoided, in the hope of continuing to improve. I’m sure there will be plenty more ups and downs, but that’s the life of an urban sketcher 😎
It does sound like the right approach to focus on the sketching subjects that excite you, or at least experiment and see what happens. Hope it works out. Good luck!

Thank you so much for sharing this! To persevere when you are down is when you grow. Well done and I am glad you experienced this moment. It is very important to keep it in mind. Because down times will occur every now and then. If you remember this and the feeling this brought you, you'll be just fine. Because you will surely go on. Even if only for the feeling of accomplishment this results in. It is an awesome complex sketch and you've done extremely well!

Thank you Monika. It’s true, everyone who tries sketching / art / anything creative needs perseverance above almost everything else. It’s not like I was sitting with my head in my hands for months, it was more like scratching my head and wondering why I used to be better at this. I still enjoy it regardless, but it’s nice when it clicks again. And yes, as the great Celine Dion once sang… my art will go on 😄

@@UrbanSketchy As you have found a personal style so soon in your journey, your obstacles are perhaps of another nature, I still can not conceive. My own quest is still on the path of finding a style and a medium and a subject. Which makes it a bit easier for me. I guess once you find that, it's more difficult to grow. Because you're already there. I'll get back to you when I get to that point :D :D :D
      Thanks for the inspiration!

Sure, you’re right but the good thing is there’s no race to win so we can all develop at our own pace. Also, I think I’ve proven in my videos that I’m just as easily confused by all of this - one moment I want to focus on watercolour, then it’s colouring pens, and then it’s no colour at all. All part of the fun though!
