A Simple Way to Draw Complex Architectural Details

  • If you ever look at architecture that's festooned with highly complex detail and think you can't possibly sketch that... you're not alone. This is the sort of scene I have always avoided because it looked far too complicated, but here I'm giving it a go and find a method to reduce all the detail into a simple technique that still gives the impression of complexity. Give it a try yourself - the reference photo is linked below, along with all the materials I used. The location is The Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland.

    Thanks much for this. I certainly do avoid complicated subjects, but thanks to you, I will start tackling them. Very encouraging.

      Thank you Ed. Yes just have a go and see what happens. You could even start with a small section of a complicated scene, then do bigger scenes later once you have the hang of it. Good luck!

    💫💫 I admire your technique and your determination to learn and improve. To be fair, I can't see anything needed to be improved. However, every artist knows what they would like to achieve. I'm so glad that I came across your channel.
    Thank you so much for Donald for sharing your art thoughts and knowledge 🙌

    The main entrance to St Giles Kirk on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh as ‘twas ne’er seen afore. John Knox would be turning in his gravy 😊

    This was so satisfying to watch! As a newbie to art, something I'm taking away from you is that it is ok to take my time. This isn't a race. Last weekend I found myself trying to complete a couple of tutorials while following along with the videos. They were much too fast and it left me feeling so frustrated and in the end I really disliked the pieces. Yet, the piece that I spent a couple hours on, I absolutely loved. I'm not sure I'm ready to let go of my pencil quite yet, but thank you for the inspiration to tackle something a bit more complex. Oh! I've been using my Lamy to ink and absolutely love it. I may put some of the carbon ink in one of my TWSBI. Thanks Donald!

      Thank you Ana, glad you enjoyed it. Definitely just go at your own pace, it sounds like you’ve found a way that’s right for you so that sounds like the way forward. I know what you mean about tutorials, they can be hard to keep up with. What I try to do if I’m watching other artists is take ideas and inspiration rather than trying to exactly replicate what they do, otherwise all I get is deflated. Do your own thing and you’ll get there for sure. Good to hear your Lamy is working well, they’re fun little pens. I’ve still to experience a TWSBI but I know lots of people like those as well. They’re on my wishlist!
      Cheers, Donald.

    This really is an impressive sketch Donald, such a pleasure to follow how you are growing with your art. I have a photo I took of Peterborough Cathedral that I wanted to draw but even trying to trace the main outlines to get the scale and shapes in the right places was to mind numbing. Maybe one day I will bite the bullet and have a go. Thanks again for the inspiration🙏

    • @UrbanSketchy
      @UrbanSketchy  Před 2 lety +1

      Cheers Graham. Maybe you could try drawing a small section of the cathedral rather than the whole thing? Scale becomes less of an issue then. I doubt I’d have attempted this scene if it was the entire building, way too much detail, mind numbing is the right way of putting it 😅 Thank you!

      @@UrbanSketchy I did think about that but I am currently working on trying to get a very loose line style going that will enable me to do the whole frontage with only representational detail. I don’t know why but I really struggle with that very lose ‘urban sketch’ pen and wash style🙏

    • @UrbanSketchy
      @UrbanSketchy  Před 2 lety +1

      Cool, that sounds like fun. I have tried the loose style as you know, it’s not easy! Having a specific scene you want to sketch is a good motivator to figure it out.
