Love the use of the red marker it really pops and I think that colourful buildings need color when sketched.
Also I have been sketching for a while now and I never have the bravery to go straight in with pen.

Thank you. It’s definitely worth trying, I wasn’t confident at all that this was going to work but it turned out fine. A quick plan is still useful though, so I’m very conflicted 😅

I really like this sketch. Fabulous use of one colour in a similar way to you using the yellow. It seems to make it pop.

Thanks Tracey. I suppose it is similar to my usual yellow, the red just jumps out more against the white. Cheers!

Love this building Donald, perfect for your style. Most urban sketchers advocate going straight in with a pen, in fact some say that using a pencil first can adversely affect the outcome as you lose the freedom of sketching. Me personally, I wouldn’t dare go straight in with a pen. In fact when I did my mini series of Sydney R Jones images, I even used the grid method to get the buildings right in the first place but oddly, this made me even more frustrated if something went wrong. So be liberated and burn that pencil😊🙏

Thank you. Personally I didn’t find it made any difference in terms of drawing freely or the outcome, except (as I mentioned) that I concentrated more on the scene. I don’t know anything about the grid method and from what you’re saying it sounds like something that wouldn’t work for me at all 😅 As ever, there’s no right or wrong to any of this. Although I might not start burning my stationary just yet 😄

I actually didn’t pencil sketch until I watched your videos! I do tend to jump right in with pen, though I think my sketches are better with a bit of planning. I’m loving the pops of colour, and I must say that this building is REALLY complicated! Those dots were such a great tip! You’ve done a brilliant job, it’s fabulous! Ps love the engraving on your pen!

You didn’t? That’s interesting. I really don’t know if I’ll use pencil in future or not, depends how the next sketches turn out! If it works for you then stick with it 🙂
It might look complicated but if you break it down it’s just a bunch of rectangles, triangles and twirly bits.
It did occur to me that you could just do the dots with a pencil and erase them later, same idea but not permanent.
Thank you and glad you like the pen 😁

Donald, I enjoyed this one so much that I had a go at doing it myself. It didn’t have quite as much intricate detail so was easier to follow. Mine is not nearly as good as yours but it’s not too bad, imo.

Hi Sue, that’s brilliant, I love when people give these sketches a go. I would say try not to even compare the end result (difficult I know!), for me it’s all about the enjoyment of doing it 🙂 Cheers, Donald.

This is a TERRIFIC result!!! Isn't forgetting the putty eraser the happiest of accidents? A kick in the butt... :D

Thank you Monika. It was a lucky accident for sure, but I sort of missed having it around, if only to squish like a mini stress ball whenever I got stuck on what to draw next.

I've also stopped bothering with pencil pre-sketches. Just going in with ink. Oh, and I use watercolor paper so I can add very wet washes of watercolor paints and mix them a bit on the page. Unpredictable things will happen! 😀

That’s great you’re going straight in with ink, it’s quite a big jump. Watercolour does indeed create some very unpredictable results.

Turn the dots into birds lol

You joke, but I did seriously consider this idea, they just would have been flying dangerously close to the building. Some of my other sketches do feature v-shaped birds to hide marks on the page 🙂
