  • Have you ever wondered if more expensive fountain pens are any better for urban sketching? Are they really worth the money? Me too! As a big fan of the LAMY Safari, in this video I try out its fancy big brother - the LAMY Scala - to see what it's like to draw with and if it's worth the upgrade.
    Note: this pen was sent to me by Penheaven.co.uk, but they had no editorial input into this video, and all opinions are 100% my own - I wouldn't have it any other way.
    The building location is in Glasgow, Scotland.

    The old St Enoch’s subway entrance. Never looked better 😊

      That’s it, the old subway entrance. I knew this 😅

    Another enchanting sketch of an incredible building!❤💛

      Thank you 🙂 It is a quirky building, especially with it being right in the centre of the city. They certainly don’t make buildings like this any more. Cheers!

    Love the wonky style and I'm a huge fan of my cheap Lamy too!! Sorry you left! Love, love the accent as well!

      Thank you Patty, very kind 😊 I’m sure I’ll be back making videos again at some point, if/when I have more time. Thanks for the compliment on my accent 😅

    Another cracking sketch Donald. That is a nice pen, I do love Lamy pens. Weirdly, the main ‘benefit’ of the top end pens is the better quality nibs which are made to higher tolerances and better polished on the contact tip to give a smoother action on the paper and ink flow. The fact that Lamy use the same nibs in their range may sound like a negative but their nibs are so good it just works. Of course, the feel of the pen is really important and it is nice to use a better feeling pen just as much as it is to use a more expensive camera. Won’t take better pictures but it feels good and inspires you to use it.🙏

      Thanks Graham. I think the problem is that German manufacturers are so obsessive with getting things right that they make their cheapest products too good! It does seem mad to use the same nibs across the range but I like that because it’s predictable, if I invest in a more premium model I know I’m going to get on well with it. I think the Lamy 2000 uses a different nib though and that costs a couple of hundred, so maybe that’s better still. Don’t imagine I’ll ever find out what a gold nib pen is like to draw with, so I will bask in this moment 😅

    First of all, the building is fabulous and your version of it is fabulous-er (i know it is more fabulous ;) ). I am amazed how detailed you make these sketches. And they do turn out incredibly well. Your hand is so steady and confident. You are amazing. Congratulations. Thanks for sharing the thoughts on the pen. I have recently had the same feeling of 'grown up', when I used a fude nib (the bent ones). I felt so important, so... accomplished. I had no one to share the feeling with. But here I get my chance. Good luck!

      I am definitely not amazing but thank you for saying so 😊 It’s funny you say that my hand is steady because it’s not at all, I’m so riddled with arthritis that my hands are actually very shaky. Sometimes you’ll see me draw a line and then it will have a little wobble, that’s not deliberate. You can maybe see this at the start of this drawing, although timelapse does make it less obvious. The overall wobbly style only came about because if I tried sensible straight line drawings the shaky flaws would ruin it, so I just exaggerated the wobbles instead.
      Everyone goes on about fude nibs, I must try those sometime. Happy you found a place to share, that’s what I want this little sketchy bubble to be for 🙂

      @@UrbanSketchy yeah yeah! Blah blah blah...
      You are amazing to me! 😀
      And by steady I mean the way you are so confident in your adorable wobbly style. You have embraced it and made it your own so well. This style really is you! The hesitation is visible in the watercolour videos, but in these ink sketches you really know what you are doing. (Not necessarily meaning that you plan). But you have come to know the resources and that is so important.
      Thanks for being an inspiration!

      😅 Fine, I will accept it under protest and let’s move on ☺️ Ugh, watercolour though. You can definitely tell I’m still a bit lost when it comes to painting, but I know I’m not alone so I’m not giving up on it (just yet). I think I want to have one more serious crack at trying to figure it out, then if I don’t get anywhere, shrug and go back to my colouring in.

      Thank you Susan. I’m glad you found it too! Really helpful to hear that, appreciate it. I will indeed keep drawing. And another Lamy fan 😀

  • @CherylsCreativeWorld33

    Love this drawing! You managed to find another cool building! Congratulations on your new pen! I’m really glad you’re enjoying using it. I love how you’re just going straight in with the pen now!

    • @UrbanSketchy
      @UrbanSketchy  Před 2 lety +1

      I have always liked this building but in the past it would never have occurred to me to draw it (or anything).
      Thanks 🙂 It was fun to try drawing with something fancier!
      It has been good practice to go straight into the ink but a pencil guide would have let me see beforehand that I should draw it smaller or use a larger pad to give it a bit more breathing space. Still unsure whether to bring the pencil back, this is really just making things even harder 😅

  • @katefarmerpallotta9710

    Hmm. I wonder if the weight and balance of this pen would be easier on my old hands/wrists

    • @UrbanSketchy
      @UrbanSketchy  Před rokem

      It’s possible a weightier pen like this could help, difficult to say for sure though. Some might want to go the other way and have as light a pen as possible. I have rheumatoid arthritis so do have wrist problems, but manage to comfortably draw with the cheaper plastic LAMY pens just as much as this one. If you’re able to try out pens in a shop it would help to test them I think, but not everyone can do that. Sorry I can’t give you a definitive answer. Cheers, Donald.
