    Does anyone just sail east into the open ocean, staying clear of the projected hurricane track? I always wondered if you could just towards Africa for for 4 or 5 days and come back when it is safe.

    As far as their accuracy in predicting where the hurricanes make land fall is 80 percent wrong all the time. That’s the joke here in Florida as they are never right until 2 days before it hits. Which then it’s too late.

    • @JRTurgeon13
      @JRTurgeon13 Před 7 dny

      "Beryl" is projected to be a strong category 3 or maybe a low category 4 hurricane so early in the season. Also unusual is a hurricane that is so far South and that goes directly in the Gulf of Mexico, especially so early in the season.

  • @chhindz
    @chhindz Před 8 dny

    Last season would have been great for your plan, as all storms avoided Bahamas. You have fast boat, which is a plus for early relocation. If you are run over in hurricane hole the fetch is probably the most boat sinking factor over wind.

    Hi there. You didn't mention the reason you have decided to go this route, curious as to what that is. Will tell you about our experience from 19 years ago. We spent hurricane season in Bahia Del Sol, El Salvador. An area known to be a good hurricane hole, with very very little history of hurricanes coming close. Well guess what. One came, not a big one, believe it was "just" rated as a category one. This is back when the season was not considered to be as extended nor as volatile as it is now. The hurricane was forecasted to hit right over us, we were designated to be the eye. In fact, we and the other boats at this location were in direct contact with NOAA during the course of its transit, as it was the first time the eye was ever to hit this area. We were prepared and shaking in our boots as we were there, thinking we picked a "safe spot". At the very last minute, maybe a couple of hours from when forecast to hit, it drastically changed course South and while we saw storm force winds, we were spared the worst of it. I imagine you are thinking, ah, but this was sooooo long ago, 19 years, the forecasting is so much better now, that was ancient times. I do not believe anyone in NOAA would say they can guarantee you a forecast for 5-6 days, maybe a good idea in 48 hours, and bottom line, mother nature remains unpredictable. Even more so these days. Just wonder why you have made this decision. Your decision of course. Wonder too what you will do with the dogs if the option of flying out arises. I do not think most if any airlines will allow dogs in cargo that time of year and they look a little big to fit under the seat. ;-) Stay safe. Wish you the best.

    I live in Florida and the BEST hurricane information is by a CZcams channel called "Mr Weatherman". He spends ALL of his time discussing the weather between Africa and the US with the bulk of his time south of the US. Meteorology is my hobby and I give him 5 stars out of a possible 5 stars. Question; Doesn't your boat insurance get cancelled if you are in a hurricane zone after June 30th? Stay safe!! Your could be inline for a possible tropical depression/storm in about 5 or so days

  • @JRTurgeon13
    @JRTurgeon13 Před 8 dny

    Traditionally, hurricane 'high season' is mid-August to mid-October, with a definite peak in September. With the climate change, the season has been extended, though mostly toward later part of the season. The traditional hurricane starts off Africa, but with super warm sea water, they can form anywhere from inside the Gulf of Mexico, to the Atlantic near the Caribbean to even North of Bermuda. "We're going to have 5-6 days advance warning..." is optimistic. It would work with a hurricane with a standard path (starts near Africa, moves westward with recurvature along the Eastern seaboard). With a tropical storm/hurricane that develops closer to the Caribbean, you may get 3 days or less. Also a hurricane that, for several days, is predicted to hit the Dominican Republic (or South of the DR) may change course and hit the Bahamas, further lessening your advance warning. With a sailboat, you can't outrun a hurricane which travel mostly at 10-15 knots (it usually slows down when it moves up the Caribbean archipelago). Finally the decision to abandon the boat may seem like an objective decision: "When it gets (this) bad, we'll abandon". But it's really easy, natural even, to tell yourself: "I think it won't get much worse. We can tough it out.". If it's been blowing 30-40 knots for several hours (far below tropical storm strength BTW), can you manoeuver the boat to a dock or get in the dinghy and get everybody safely to shore?

    Hi Guys. I've had lots of different plans for Hurricanes - which I do not like , after nearly having a roofing slate empty ended in my head, ut luckily I had excellent reflexes, and flipped it over my head with my left hand, which almost severed the index finger on that hand just below the middle knuckle - all got fixed OK, with the young apprentice holding the finger together as I used Disinfectant wipes on it prior to Xupergluing layer after of a splint and insta set each layer with accelerator spray. Today, I have barely a scar. 👍 When things were more predictable and their was a lot less weirdness - my plan then was to head for the West Side of the Yucatan Peninsula, and Shelter there ? not so reliable at the moment it seems How reliable a bolt hole is Luperon in the Dominican Republic ? Emily and Clsrk's Channel,on CZcams have been using it for a few years now, and they have even done a guide on how to safely get in there. It seems value for money and a nice place to hang out, but use a mooring ball in there . They explain why. Others than that, and watch the Mr Weatherman Channel on CZcams, I now really have two Plans. Plan A - Head to Mattapoisett on the South Coast of Massachusetts for the Summer, , get Hauled out there as boats are being launched for the Summer Season, by Triad Boatworks, and have the Boat Fully inspected, Serviced, and have them do CopperCoat Antfouling for me. Then get the boat launched when they are pulling boats out for the Winter, and start the Commute back to the Caribbean. Plan B, head South to Northern Argentina, stock up with Wine and Beef, before heading to Ascension Island and Cape Verde, maybe up to Gibraltar, before heading back to the CaribbeanNo Plans seet in Stone, because the use of Weather Weapons Can Change Everything. Weather Weapons are why I abandoned all thoughts of doing a Circumnavigation decades ago. Now we can add Directed Energy Weapons ( DEWs ) to them as well. 😡 Luperin and Heading North are nice options for me, the best Fun though ? Maybe Heading South. 🤔 Best Wishes. Bob. 👍🌟🌟🌟❤️

    • @brownnoise357
      @brownnoise357 Před 8 dny

      PS. The Argentina to Cape Verde Route is the old Welsh Trader route back from Peru and Chile, after delivering Welsh Slate and Coal There. They would return with Holds full of Guano etc back to Wales. Biggest Risk was water running out after getting Stuck in the Doldrums for weeks, so fill up with Diesel in Argentina, and have a Watermaker just in case. Have enough Diesel to motor out of the Doldrums in search of Wind. Solar should keep your batteries topped up easily. Oh Wine and Beef ? Barter for beer and Pub meals at Ascension if they will let you go ashore - get clearance first, don't just show up-Good Caribbean Rum will probably be welcomed as well ? 😅 Bob. 👍🌟🌟🌟❤️

    It seems to me that instead of refixing the hole or crack in the tank try and figure out what is causing it to crack open? If it is flexing then try and prevent the flexing etc etc. In other words the cause is what you have to fix ..... after that any of the products you have tried will work.

    • @SailingZephyr

      Hi Tim! Thanks for the info…yeah it’s in a difficult spot the crack. It doesn’t leak when the tank is half full but obv as we fill it to max the pressure is just too high! I think if it was on a flat surface bit of the tank it would be easier to repair? Not sure! 🤔 it’s def got us puzzled! Cheers for watching! 😀

    Happy Birthday Nat, I have some stuff here (give me an address and I will send it to you) called Knead It which is an epoxy where you mix equal parts and put it over the leak and leave it for about 24 hours. I have used it on a plastic type fuel tank a few years for a Ford station wagon and it never leaked a drop. It should work for your water tank. Let me know if you want it free, no charge. I live in Whyalla, South Australia. I think it's called Knead It because you mix it with your fingers and press it over the leak (like kneading it, Offer is there if you want it. Love your channel even though I have never sailed on a sailboat EVER !!!!

      Cheers Owen! After u mentioned it, had a quick look online! They only sell knead it in Aus but I can get a similar putty epoxy in the US. Let me order that one once we get to the states and then try that one! Thanks for the amazing offer to send that one…but I know how much shipping costs are from Aus to states….crazy! 😜 so better try this one first! Will keep u updated! Thank you so much for the tip…fingers crossed it works!! Sounds promising if it managed to stop a fuel leak on the Ford! When we get to Aus you will just have to come sailing with us!!! ⛵️ 😃

    When I’ve used GFlex I’ve done a full-on glass patch over the area … even carbon fibre once. Just using the epoxy by itself doesn’t seem to work as well. Are you sure you’ve 100% identified the leak(s) location?

    • @haydenwatson7987
      @haydenwatson7987 Před 15 dny

      That was my thought as well. The repair looked to be very thin which puts a lot of stress on a little bit of G Flex. I would make the repaired area larger and pre-saturate a piece of light glass cloth that extends at least a couple of inches beyond the crack.

    • @SailingZephyr
      @SailingZephyr Před 13 dny

      Great point! We had the glass ready and then we went against using it…and I can’t for the life of me think why in the moment that was a good idea! 🫨 so maybe we should try with some fiberglass next time! Yeah the leak is def coming from that crack there! But just like u mentioned once we are at a marina in the states and we have a bit more room might take it out and fully test it on the dock to double check there aren’t any more cracks that we haven’t identified! The saga will continue! Hahaha 😝 cheers for the info

    Water tank saga needs a playlist😊. Could there be more than one leak? Perhaps soapy water and an air compressor?

    • @SailingZephyr
      @SailingZephyr Před 13 dny

      It does doesn’t it!! It’s driving us crazy! Ahh boat life! Yeah, we are pretty confident it’s that crack that’s causing the leak but once we get to a marina in the states we will have more room to properly check it out! It’s hard to do at anchor…so I think we will wait till then! The saga will go on and on! 😂

    Flex Seal is an amazing product line. The marketing is a bit corney/funny but the stuff is amazing. Why not try this and any other product on the top of your tank and see how well it adheres... then try it on the leak.

    • @SailingZephyr
      @SailingZephyr Před 13 dny

      Thanks for that! We will try it out!! Cheers

  • @cestmoi1262
    @cestmoi1262 Před 15 dny

    Sure that is the only place that could leak the water? You could have a hairline crack that only shows up when the tank is filled, that's a lot of weight.. I suggest taking the tank out --- again!---, line the bottom side with paper and fill it up. If there is another leak the location should be obvious.

    • @SailingZephyr
      @SailingZephyr Před 13 dny

      Thanks for that! Yeah I think we will def do that once we are in a marina in the states and have access to plenty of water and of course more room! But yeah now with all the comments we are starting to think maybe another crack has appeared that we haven’t identified! The saga will go on! 😬 cheers for that…I like the paper towel idea!

    I reccomend first--Loctite pl marine fast cure adhesive sealant-used for underwater applications--second you may try PC marine epoxy putty--might be worth 1 more try B4 having to replace tank--good luck-Oh, and happy B.D. Natalie !!

      Cheers Bill! Ok will be ordering those and once we get state side will be in a marina so much easier to do the work and check for leaks! Thanks so much for the recommendations! Seems like they are both easy to get online and delivered! 👍😀

    Seems like everyone uses a all chain rode these days, probably because it's more convenient to retrieve it on the windless, but if you're going to be in an area with swells or significant wake a dozen meters of chain and the rest polypropylene line is a far better (and cheaper) solution. It floats so it will naturally tend to hold itself off the bottom in case there's anything there that can chafe/catch it. A small fender can be attached between the chain and line to raise it up a bit more if the bottom is really bad. It's stretchy so it will impart a much less violent motion onto the boat when there's waves. Just don't leave it stored in the sun when not in use.

    It was vital, apart from anything else, that you save those expensive Batteri3s that must Never Be Deep Discharged. Lesson I learned between September one year and the end of April the following year when there was heavy overcast and not enough wind to get power from Solar Panels or the Wind Generator, but thankfully I had a small 2.5 kw Yanmar Diesel Generator to charge the Batteries Before they all went below a 50% state of Charge Therevis no Such Thing as a Safe to Deep Discharge Battery, and you always need backups to protect your valuable investments. for me, this means a reasonable output alternator on the inboard Diesel - say a 120 amp so shared between several batteries, none of them get fast charged, plus a diesel Generator for a backup of the backup. I like AGM Housebank 1, a d the most recent Lifepo4 for Bank 2, whose main job is keeping Bank 1 in Perfect condition at between an 80% and 100% State of charge. It is easy then to keep Bank 2 at over a 50% State of Charge, and no Fast charging top ups of Bank 2. It is very easy to kill your batteries if you don't pay attention tosimple basics, just like happened toyour engine start Battery. Lead based batteries must Never be discharged below 50%, because when you add in their self discharge rate, you rapidly have Dead unsalvageable Batteries. I made Agricultural Tractor Batteries last in good condition for over 15 years, by Never letting them get below 12.2 volts. Then an unforecast freeze, with a wind chill below minus 45 degrees C killed them (the ground actually froze deeper than 10 feet, believe it or not, as a friends insulated plumbing for his new house extension had to be dug up again, and repaired, buried deeper. In recent years, lots of misi formation has been given out about the capabilities of the State of technology, such that no Battery Technology on the Horizon is able to compete with the Energy Density of Diesel Fuel, heck it doesn't even match Gasoline for that matter. The Fuel of the future imho, is Renewable, waste to Energy via Plasma Gasification and the Syngas Production of Ultra Clean Synthetic Liquid and Gas Fuels, and for real work, Energy Density enhanced Synthetic Diesel, which should Never Run Out, or cost more than pence per gallon. The Technology needed, is already available off the Shelf, and ine of the most precious feedstock for it is - Waste Plastics and Rubbish Dump Landfill. Human Sewage and Seawater are also really good feedstock as well. So are Emissions from Coal Fired Power Stations. Seawaterbis good, because far too much CO2 is locked away out of the Reach of Life and Biodiversity in the Oceans, which Contain about 140 times more CO2 than the Atmosphere, which actually has a pretty Serious Shortage of CO2 Content, though you would never know it from all of the Junk Climate Science we keep having rammed down our throats. Sigh. Best Wishes. Bob. 🤔🌟🌟🌟👍❤️

    PPS2 To be Fair, The Other Boatyard in the Harbour appears to have really good Craftsmen as well ? I was in a Team with a couple of them on Pub Quiz Nights in the In on Shipyard Park - Great Ownsrs and staff there as well. Great Chef too, his Mac and Cheese (which I didn't like before I went to the USA ) was todie for. Apparently Peter's Son, it was all he'd eat growing up, and he did well on it, as today, he's a robust Fireman in the Harbour. Can't wait to get back k to meet them all again tbh. ❤❤❤

    PPS. thatBoatyard - Triad Boatworks of Mattapoisett MA, is the Only Boatyard that I Trust to properly apply CopperCost Antifouling for me- Unfortunately I didn't have the Visa time left for them to do it, so they did a first class job of applying Pettit Trinidad Pro Hard antifouling for me. All other work they did for me was first class, including sorting a vehicle to collect the boat from the seller, and deliver it to their Yard. My Next Sailboat, I intent to have them inspect and service annually during their Quiet Summer period, and be set to head to the Caribbean from around October every year. Launching should fit in nicely when other boats are being pulled out for the Winter. Bob. 👍🌟🌟🌟❤️

    Must admit, I'm sticking with an oversized genuine Lewmar Delta Anchor on the end of All Chain. Sailing Teulu had theirs hold solid in over 50 knot Winds, and I an't believe they changed it for a different but Trendy Anchor. Sigh. Peter the Boatyard Owner told me they had Never had a problem with the Lewmar Delta Anchor, after my attempt to get a Rocna got seriously held up with delivery problems at the time, which meant if I continued with the order, I'd exceed the Visa period I had for the USA. Peter got the Lewmar Delta Swlivered the following morning for me. How did that Anchor work out for me ? Far better than I expected, and it seriously impressed me with how it performed at Anchor during a really vicious Tornado Storm - including how it Saved the boat by being Pushed out sideways, when the boat was on the brink of being Capsized and sinking, as the VHF aerial on the top of the Mast was deep under waterbon the Poer side. After resetting the Anchor in clear water behind all the other boats, it didn't budge despite Multiple Tornado hits during the rest of the night. So Guess which Anchor I'm sticking with as my Main Anchor (on the end of High quality triple Galvanised chain of course ) ? 🤔 Bob. PS Beware of Fake Delta Anchors made from Rubbish Steeel with no hardening or tempering. A Correctly made qith good steel, properly hardened and tempered, had a very distinctive Ring to it when Struck. You could tell that the one Sailing Teulu had was Soot On. 👍
