  • Does the perfect sailing passage exist? The right wind, boat is balanced and fast, seas are following and there are no hazards to worry about.
Our ongoing passage south starts out perfectly , but soon we find that we lose our wind and we cross paths with a cargo ship who’s captain is unclear on his course of action to avoid a collision.

Appauling actions by the container ship - first he was the overtaking vessel so he should take avoiding action, second he was not in a restricted waterway so as a motor vessel he should also give way to you and third his decision over the radio to turn to starboard was ridculous and highly dangerous. I doubt very much it was the Captain on the radio as he would have made much clearer and better decisions. An earlier decision to make an a moderate turn to port would have clarified the situation as he would no longer be on a collision course with you.

Just aim for the stern ofvthe Cargo ship and if the bearing doesn't cha ge then he has changed course towars you and is deliberately looking for a Collision. A Hand bearing Monocular is reall handy for checking for boats on Collision courses tbh. worth every penny. Mine is a high quality Chinese make and cost about 60 dollars US including delivery from Anazon, and is really handy to have at the helm imho. Bob. 👍🌟🌟🌟❤️

The majority of cargo ships are under orders to not change course, others don’t speak English, there may or may not be a watch at the helm.like a Coast Guard commander once told me, irregardless of who has the right of way ….the bigger boat wins !! So don’t wreck the boat!! good move on your part to just stay well clear ! Well done guys!!

In practise ColRegs are an aspiration, not a law until you're in court. The cargo people don't read them, they just deliver stuff. Good course of action by you to stay safe.

    • @saildreamer
      @saildreamer Před 6 měsíci

Sorry that is absolutely incorrect. Just to read the COI is not good enough - you need to UNDERSTAND them and comply with them. There is a clear obligation to avoid collision even if you are the stand-on vessel.

Great video. We were anchored next to you guys at Sandy Dollar Bay back in June or July. If you have time to answer, we are very interested in how you have your dinghy rigged without actual davits. Our dinghy is in the "garage" 😂but it's such a mission getting it in and out as we have to deflate it a bit to make it fit so we're trying to come up with an easier solution and use the garage as storage.
Fernandina Beach is very pretty, we cleared in there when we came across from the Bahamas. Cheers 😊

Hi guys! We remember you!! I remember we were so mesmerized by your boat! So beautiful.
We don’t have actual davits but we do have a stainless steel arch that has a special kind of davit system built in! It’s a couple of blocks and then a pulley system…super rudimentary but works great! And very easy to whip the tender up and down with! If you send us an email to contact.sailingzephyr we can send u some pics what we have.
I do remember you guys throwing the dinghy under in the garage section! I guess that would be a pain having to do it every single day!!!
      Where are you guys now?

Hey James, don't know if you remember but me and my sailing club "Called Higher" were sailing in southeast Florida in the Indian River Lagoon and singing Christmas Carols to everyone a couple weeks ago. You also might have gotten cookies from an inflatable skiff. Hope you enjoyed!

That was indeed confusing😮 but rightly you took no chances and manoeuvred so that there was no doubt. So something happened after all during a further calm and beautiful crossing😅..good 2024🎉, may your wishes come true in this new year..bravely forward and sail by today's wind..or at least try😅

I assume you have an AIS receiver, but do you also have an AIS transmitter so the cargo ship could see your speed and heading? If so, that probably would have helped alleviate some of the confusion. If not, did you tell him your heading and speed? I am asking this for my own education. Please don't read criticism where it is not intended.

You kept saying that the ship and "right of way" but there is absolutely nothing in the COLREGS about "Right of way". In fact, those words do not appear in the regs at all.
In the crossing situation with the container ship, I am assuming that you were both in open deep water and not constrained by draft or other obstructions. Given that assumption, you both were governed by the COLREGS rule 15 - Crossing Situation [(a) When two power-driven vessels are crossing so as to involve risk of collision, the vessel which has the other on her own starboard side shall keep out of the way and shall, if the circumstances of the case admit, avoid crossing ahead of the other vessel.]
Given that you were both under power and you were on his starboard side, he was clearly the give way vessel, and you were the stand on vessel. He was doing his best to stay clear of you but your vague attempts to stay clear of him left him in confusion as to your intensions. As stand on, you were governed by rule 17
[Rule 17- Action by Stand-on Vessel
(a)(i) Where one of two vessels is to keep out of the way, the other shall keep her course and speed.
(ii) The latter vessel may, however, take action to avoid collision by her maneuver alone, as soon as it becomes apparent to her that the vessel required to keep out of the way is not taking appropriate action in compliance with these Rules.
    (b) When, from any cause, the vessel required to keep her course and speed finds herself so close that collision cannot be avoided by the action of the give-way vessel alone, she shall take such action as will best aid to avoid collision.
    (c) A power-driven vessel which takes action in a crossing situation in accordance with Rule 17(a)(ii) to avoid collision with another power-driven vessel shall, if the circumstances of the case admit, not alter course to port for a vessel on her own port side.
    (d) This Rule does not relieve the give-way vessel of her obligation to keep out of the way.]
17(a)(i) says you shall maintain course and speed.
17(a)(ii) says you may take action to avoid collision if it becomes apparent that give way is not avoiding. With a big ship, if you want to make sure to keep control of the avoidance and let him pass, this is the best course of action. If you opt for this option, you need to make obvious and decisive action. Rule 17(c) says not to turn to port but if you do it early enough and point strongly in that direction by 30º-40º so that the AIS shows your path well behind their stern, it would be easy for the ship to understand that you will go behind them.
17(b) says that under all cases, stand-on must do everything possible to avoid collision but that only applies to very close encounters, and you were not that close.
The long and short is that you were stand on and should maintain your course and speed and if you decide not to, you must make and early decisive course change that leaves give-way in no doubt as to your intensions.
When you contacted the ship. I would have said something like "Per COLREGS rule 15 I am Stand On but and will maintain my course and speed. If that causes you any problems, please advise me as to a better course of action."

I might come across as a bitvofva Debbie Downer, but given just how popular eating Raw Dish Sushi appears to be amongst the sailing Community is on CZcams Channels, it is only right to warn about the serious parasite problems that can come from eating uncooked Fish ? Parasites such as hook worm. So if in places where anti Parasites Ivermectin is sold, over the counter without a Prescription, like in Mexico, it really is worth adding some courses to the First Aid kits when you get the chance ? Best Wishes. Bob. 👍🌟🌟🌟❤️
