Amelia Earhart's Last Flight • The original Okie Doke Band
Red River Dave's song written and released soon after Amelia's disappearance. I saw a Facebook post saying a deep sea exploration team thinks they've found the plane in very deep waters in the Pacific. This is the tune we were playing when the late Larry VanOver arrived at the first rehearsal after officially joining our band, and he said "that sounds like Rockabilly music to me!" I asked him what he'd called it and he repeated the remark. It was the first time I remembered hearing that term, but I looked for more and found Robert Gordon's LP "Rock-Billy Boogie."

Another tune from the 1981 Good Earth Expo show. I just learned about and ordered a CD called "Jug Band Extravaganza" that has a few of the original Jim Kweskin Jug Band members, and Jim sings this tune on it. Highly recommend that. Another version is also on the "Snake Charmin' Baby" CD of Okie Doke studio, radio and live material.

This Webb Pierce hit was written by Mel Tillis, and Webb got writer credit for recording it I believe. Features my sorta rudimentary lead guitar playing on the '57 Gretsch Streamliner that was later stolen. We were performing at a Good Earth Expo, one of which was the first event ever at the Tacoma Dome. The band played them a couple years, and hosted the stage, and I continued that solo a coup...

Here's another song from our 1981 EP! I wrote the song in 1971, or the lyrics at least, after meeting folk singer Bill Weiss and his family who had driven over the mountains from Quincy to escape the heat there in the summer after I had moved to a cabin 8 miles from the town of Index, WA, up the North Fork of the Skykomish River. They saw me walking down that road and I smiled and waved. They w...

Thanks! I don't actually recall about the dancing, though you could one step to it, and it's got a swing feel. I assume people did dance, we played dances out here in our valley about 3 times a year for a while, though I'm not sure if "Moonglow" went back to that era in our repertoire. But we had played the Saw Festival in Santa Cruz, CA the year before our record came out, which I suppose prompted us to add saw to the repertoire.

The original resource section is entirely out of date, but with the internet now folks can find that information, the current versions, easily. There is another chapter I might add to the newer edition. I found out that another musician I know in this area Stickshift Annie Eastwood, was an illustrator for The Mother Earth News before the time I wrote my columns for them! I enjoy simple sounds and it’s easy when a person thinks in more simple ways to achieve it. Thanks again.

@@eddiemoore8468 You're right! The digital age has made the DIY approach even more valid and cheaper to pursue than when I wrote the chapters in the book on that! I DID also make a video based on the "Homegrown Music: From the Horse & Buggy To The Edge Of Space" school assembly program, when funds for that type of performance had dried up for the most part. The segment on playing the jug is one of my most viewed ones on CZcams, and at the end includes another version of this song with my other band Filé Gumbo, though we had to cannibalize the stand for the jug to use for a mike on the mandolin. Result: folks (including David Hamilton, who crosses in front of the camera in the clip) complain about the lack of jug, not getting my "invisible jug" concept.

Hi Will! There are 2 more songs from that video already posted to CZcams at my channel (MBristol49), and both feature your dad singing: "Snake Charmin' Baby" and "Struttin' Chickens." I actually do have I believe 2 45 minute sets from that Good Earth Expo, taped by the band leader for a band called the Cascade Mountaineers. I used to joke with him that I was going to start a band called the Cascade Mountain Noses. I can't quite recall his name at the moment, though I knew him well, and have several of his business cards in my files I'll bet. I'm sure he's passed away by now. A year and a half ago or so a guy from Japan bought the mixer that was hand wired for us by Doug Schauer's ex-wife, and I put together a pdf story on the band with a lot of pictures, in case it might make it more valuable for him when he brought it home. I don't know that it would, but I enjoyed putting that together, and I intended to print a 3 or 4 page version of it in Blue Suede News, but that got bumped by a huge story on Little Richard submitted at the last possible minute by a writer who'd been doing stuff like that to me for 3 decades by then, though that one topped them all, and that was the last issue I did. Okie Doke ended up being a 1/4 page photo with a caption instead. Anyhow, I'd be happy to send you the pdf, your dad has it. I actually just added another page to it because I finally found the letter I got from Ronny Weiser at Rollin' Rock Records, his reaction to the record when I sent it to him. I'm in the process of selecting another batch of photos for another page, but they'll all be from after Dan left the group. Anyhow, great to hear from you! Oh yes, in answer to your other question, I also put out a CD that I recently renamed "Snake Charmin' Baby," which has the 4 songs from the EP, some radio performances and some live performances on it, plus maybe one or two home recorded demos. Subtitle "The Best Of Okie Doke - Studio, Radio & Live." My original version of it featured 3 or 4 songs from after Dan left us, but in the end I decided it should only be the original band, plus Larry VanOver who was with us for a year and a half about.

Will, if you send me an e-mail address (you can get mine at BlueSuedeNews.com) I'd be happy to send you the tracks of the "Snake Charmin' Baby" CD and cover art via WeTransfer or one of those - which is the same as the EP, but colorized. Unless maybe your dad has just copied it for you already.
