  • Here's another song from our 1981 EP! I wrote the song in 1971, or the lyrics at least, after meeting folk singer Bill Weiss and his family who had driven over the mountains from Quincy to escape the heat there in the summer after I had moved to a cabin 8 miles from the town of Index, WA, up the North Fork of the Skykomish River. They saw me walking down that road and I smiled and waved. They went a short way and decided they should turn back and meet me, and we had a picnic, and ended up passing a guitar back and forth. Very pleasant encounter! I didn't write music for it then, but a couple years alter, after I'd started hitching into Seattle to play every Friday at the Pike Place Market, I turned the page in my notebook one day to that set of lyrics and the music just jumped out at me. The lyrics to one verse got changed later, just after the second time I'd recorded it, when bass player Joe Anderson suggested the line should be "Elvis comin' back some day..." He was right, I recorded it a third time (a version which can be found at YOuTube as part of my Bristol Rockin' CD), and then a fourth live at the EMP opening for Asleep At The Wheel in 2002. The video of that version is here at my channel.

We had a reunion show in 2022 out at Henley's place in Carnation, a memorial for Henley put on by his son Morgan. I posted a couple videos from that back then here at my CZcams channel. Where's your open mike?
