Hey y'all- I'm Dan! Join me as I explore the waters in North Alabama and around the South in my kayak and canoe. I love being out on the water and just being in nature and I try to capture a little bit of it with my cameras each time I go out. Grab a paddle and let's go, y'all!

Calfkiller River
zhlédnutí 849Před měsícem
My friends Erica & Jimmy took us down another one of their local favorites- the Calfkiller River in Sparta, TN. Local lore says the river is named for a Cherokee Indian Chief that once lived in the area. This was a beautiful, relaxing float on a gorgeous little river. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

[Note : re-release of an earlier video with minor edits] Join me as I paddle a beautiful, 10-mile stretch of the Buttahatchee River near Hamilton, AL, from "Burnout Bridge" to the Munsingwear Canoe Launch. There's a shorter trip you can do starting at Munsingwear and going down to Tree House Canoe Launch. I did this at 1.5ft on the USGS gage, but I wouldn't recommend doing the upper portion bel...

Cant wait to see your WOR videos
Saw the RK live stream. Am impressed you made Nantahalia falls and most of all sect 9 FB. Frank Bells always makes me nervous. Been going up to Hot Springs to paddle since the late 70s. Saw Wades video of the Ocoee with RKs and you sitting on the bridge. What all did you paddle WORs?
Would this be good for beginners.? We have the sportsman’s 120 and trying to find places to go. How long does the upper take? I heard the lower is easier but that upper looks beautiful!!!!! But my husband and I are very much newbies lol
Hello Dan Happy 4th of July to you and your family man. I hope you enjoyed it with your family and friends man. Look like a nice float man. I saw how narrow it got man. Just wide enough for your kayak 🛶 only. ( WOW ) nice AG Teacher Group man. Good video buddy thanks you for sharing this & i hope you are having a good weekend buddy. Stay safe out there on the water buddy.
That's was crazy man. All about having fun.
Not the prettiest stream I've seen...... Didn't see any rocks, much less "painted" rocks.
Looks so peaceful! I've never been on Paint Rock, but it's in the list! Thanks for sharing. 🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶
Thanks for joining us, Dan. I think that everyone really enjoyed it, even with the really low water and all of the debris brought about by all of the spring floods. It was a pretty good workshop, learning about "The Delicate Balance of Agriculture and Ecology Along the Paint Rock River Watershed" and how the farmers and foresters of Jackson County are working so hard to protect the river that flows past their homes. Glad that you tagged along with us again this year.
Pretty typical summer levels. Good job. Thanks for sharing.
The amount of debris and trees down is unreal. I've never seen the river look so bad. Great video .
The shock of heavy rain to drought this year and last is going to produce a lot of downed trees sadly. The water levels are noticeably low too. The condition of the Paint Rock seems pretty indicative of what we're seeing elsewhere in North Alabama.
That's what I've been saying!!! BLAHAHAHAHA! Inside joke, Dan. I'll tell ya about it next time we get together!
Hi Dan, nice paddling trip! Teacher David
Did you sell your canoe?
😂every dang time😂
Hate that stupid music.
Looks like a nice place to canoe. Hope there are no Gators around. Thanks for the video.
Another great video
Grew up on that creek. Great video. Where are you from? You said "Missippi" like a native!😊
It has been around 25 years since Shan & I paddled that same section. We loved it, but just never have made it back up there. We need to make this trip again.
Dude, we need to do a collaboration. I’m in Huntsville. @gettingfreshair
I wish I could find like minded people in my area that would do this..
Just did that same float today
Thats on my to do list for sure :) awesome trip
You should really wear a hat my partner is bald and he's getting old and stuff is starting to grow on it.
Hey buddy how's it going ? I know that was good time man. As hot 🥵 as it been & getting in the water to cool down was nice too. Me & my 6 boys would love to do something like that with you man. Would you like to do something like that man ? I know 8 miles go by so fast that it needs to be a lot longer to enjoy it better. You have a good weekend buddy and be safe out there on the water man.
Awesome Thanks for sharing. 👍😀✝️. Does the backrest on the kayak make a big difference from using the canoe.
🌄☕🤝 thanks for the float
Great video, as always! Thanks, Dan!
Very touching
Thank you!!
I wondered how you started and stopped your cameras on the canoe/kayak. I use my phone to control mine. Did not know they had voice control. 😀👍✝️
The Hero 8 camera's had "turn on" which was the greatest thing, but they took that out so you'd have to buy their overpriced remotes. I do have a remote for both of my cameras, but I accidentally left them at home on this trip and had to use the voice commands. :(
Know the pain😂
Ha, ha- it really can be a pain! I have the remotes, which are overpriced and an overall gimmick that can be avoided by having "turn on" command like the 8's do, but oh well!
@@SouthernPaddler You try the Iansta 360? That's what I use, and it's controlled by your phone
The struggle is real hahaha
Yes it is, Billy!! :-)
A little rodeo on the creek in a couple of spots. Looked like a lot of fun. Great stuff, Dan.
Ha, ha- yes, John, it was! It's got some fun and some chill! I love it! Thanks, brother!!
Looks like some fast current! Fun vid!
Thanks, Dewey! It does have a few spicy sections. It really is a fantastic trip!!
😀👍✝️
Preciate it, brother! This is one of my favorites, for sure!!
Great video Dan. Those shots you get are unreal. Looks like a really fun run.
Thanks, bro! It is such scenic river and mostly remote- that's why it's one of my favorites, for sure!!!
Dan with a Dagger and a spray skirt. You'll be a full fledged white water guy in no time. Looks like a fun time on an awesome river.
LOL!! Well, I don't know about full fledged, but I do want to broaden my experiences just a little on the lower end of white water! :) Thank you!!!
Such a beautiful river to paddle. Did you use Bear Creek Canoe Run for their shuttle services? Awesome video!
We did a self shuttle
Thank you! As Roggie said, it was a self-shuttle. We added several miles by starting further upstream than Bear Creek Canoe Run, but we finished at the take-out they used. It's such a fun and beautiful river! Thank you very much!!
That was us at the poker table 5:07
DUDE- that's awesome!!!😎🛶💯♣️🃏
Man look like good time on the water. Nice group you had too. A river like that my boys would love with the lil water fall. Dan a have a question did you buy your red kayak 🛶 new or use ? I also like the Spray skirt that you had on the kayak too to keep the water out. I am about to get me a sit inside kayak for kayak camping 🏕. I found a way to fit my big extremely wide feet 🦶 in the kayak 🛶 with out my feet 🦶 getting Stuck inside the car yet 🛶 . It's feels a lil Weird but I get use to it. Dan did the cover come with the kayak 🛶 or did you had to but it separately ? I take it is hard for you to put your feet 🦶 out side of the kayak 🛶 . As my boys call It ( Cruise control ) you have a good weekend buddy and thanks you for sharing this video buddy.
Hey Mack! I bought this kayak (Dagger Katana 10.4) new. It was recommended by several folks (including River King Pete) because it's easier for bigger guys to get in and out of. The spray skirt (cover) was purchased separately from Seals Sprayskirts. It's not the type made for rolling, but just to keep splashes out of the boat. For a sit inside, look at the Old Town Loon 12.5. That's what I have and it has a "console" that can be removed that makes getting in an out almost as easy as a sit-on-on-top...and it has a 400+ lbs capacity! Thanks and take care, Mack!
All of a sudden, someone gets that reminder that you need to lash everything to your kayak. 😅 Such a beautiful area.
Yes!! LOL!! He tries to land on top of that rock every trip. It's more of a ritual, now...lol!! I think he just enjoys cooling off!! Thank you!!
If you're going to float in Mississippi I recommend doing the Chunky River.
I live in North Alabama and I drove over the Chunky on the way down. I joked to my friends that would be a great river to do on the name alone...lol! But glad to know it's a worthy destination! I'd love to know more about it!! Thanks!! Dan
@@SouthernPaddler From the put in point at Chunky, MS to take out in Enterprise, MS is about 20 miles. There's a few areas where the river gets shallow and there are "rapids" to keep things fun and a couple of sand bars that you can camp on along the way. Finding a good spot for a hammock may be challenging. The scenery is mostly hard wood, clay banks and wildlife. On the lower half of the river you float under the haunted Stuckey's bridge and past Dunn's falls water park. Which gives you a great view of the falls and the old mill. A river depth of 3 - 3.5 ft is the most ideal time to go but anything from 2.8 - 4 ft is doable. The water is mostly honey brown but when conditions are right several areas have clear water. Eventually you'll end up in Enterprise where the Chunky and Okatibbee join to form the Chickasawhay River. I haven't had the opportunity to float beyond this point but I've been told the scenery just gets better the further you go.
There is just enough whitewater to be a challenge but not enough to overwhelm paddlers who are not professional whitewater kayakers. Looked like a lot of fun! And beautiful, too.
Exactly- it's both relaxing and just a little excitement in a couple of places!! Thank you!!
Very nice! That looks like a great stretch to paddle
Thanks, Eric! It really is- I love the remoteness and the scenery of this trip!!
👍🏞️ great float n vid. Good helpn at 5:55 , sweet creek. Gonna watch a couple vids, T&B brother
Thanks, Will! He tries to "land" on that rock every trip. It's kind of a ritual now...lol!! Blessings, brother!!
@@SouthernPaddler 😅I've hit a few myself, Blessins to y'all
@@kickapootrackers7255 Lol! We all have!! 🤣🤣
@@SouthernPaddler I did in a canoe with a buddy on the blue river. We somehow made it but the audience loved it😂. Thanks for sharing your trips, appreciated
7:27 🤩 Those always look so beautiful to me. Very adventurous paddle 😅
Thanks, Lashonda! I love those rock overhands!! It is a beautiful creek!!
Did you put in at east upper river road?
No, I put in at Sharp Ford Road on this trip. I have put in at the bridge on Upper River Rd many times and gone upstream. That's another great area to paddle!
@@SouthernPaddler is it a safe area?
@@bamawaters7501 I've never had any problems at either place. Sharp Ford has more traffic and is maybe safer, but they're both remote. I've left my truck overnight at both places and not had problems, but you never know for sure.
@@SouthernPaddler ok which one has the least amount of boat traffic you think
@@bamawaters7501 Definitely Upper River Rd.
When you passed camp azalea boat ramp to your left was my log cabin my wife and I built it ourself about 14 yrs ago ,the prettiest river in FL and great fishing something for everybody
That's so awesome! I bet it was fantastic river to live on. We definitely had a blast on this trip! It is a beauty!! Thank you!
Lived on that river for 15yrs some of the best yrs of my life
How cool! It's a beautiful river and we really enjoyed the trip! The river camps along the way are so cool!!!
I went down it on these inflatable boats wasn't able to stop much until i got stuck on the trees lol but hreat experience
Oh no...LOL! I've not been on an inflatable, but I'd like to try one sometime. It can get real cluttered in there! It was worse this time than the first time we did it, but it was still fun!
