Oh my god, the Silmarillion. It's actually not a bad read, honestly, but when people say it reads like the most boring parts of the bible sometimes, they are *not* kidding. Don't kill me if I get the order wrong but it's like "Feanor, son of Finwe" and then a bunch of other instances of the *exact* same thing, and it just kinda dumps it all on you at once. It sometimes really reads like a very dry history book. Honestly though, if you, the person reading this comment, are a fan of Lord of the Rings, and you think you can handle that, it's actually a good read. There's a lot of neat twists and turns and setups that make a lot of individual actions make more sense. It explains why elves and dwarves hate each other, and even explains where a lot of the monsters came from. It even puts actual context into who the King who Return(ed) actually was in context of everything else. It's worth if if you can. You might just have to reread sections and rest between some chapters. I know I did.

This talk about buying Humvee reminded me how certain polish CZcamsr/streamer as a joke set goal 1000zł - buying UAZ (basically Soviet era humvee) this around 250$, but it was much more than he usually got. He got five times the amount in the hour. To be clear it's not nearly enough.to get UAZ in good condition, but hey. Now he has UAZ

6:09 what is the torque figure on em? 170hp is terrible even nowadays hatchbacks make that but hp is not important on weight i hear it's a turbo diesel so probs 6.7? I mean that's at least what it should be but 9000 lbs needs sum serious torque to move it especially all terrain where humvees should go

I‘ve heard of other militaries making the keys the same across the fleet, but no key kinda takes the cake… Though to be fair, in combat you don’t like keys. As in „welp, we’re now three guys, 20miles from base and some asshat IED‘d the driver, now we leave our crap here and walk 20 miles home through the desert, despite the humvee being absolutely fine…“ Having no keys means everyone can drive it away, which is probably a good thing in a combat zone, less good in peacetime, so you guard that crap, or put some random masterlock and chain on it…

You also gotta remember, the HMMWV's weren't meant to be driven into the "war" part of the war zone. It was meant to be driven up to a certain point and then get out and walk at most, as well as a workhorse. They weren't meant to be an APC or IFV style vehicle.

Can confirm. When we hit country in '04, we had soft tops. We drove those in 500 miles. I was in an LMTV (Duece-and-a-half replacement). We had guys stuffing thick rubber mats into the framework of their doors and sandbags in the floorboards.

Yeah, the system the US Army has to expand basically infinitely was developed in the leadup to WWII. (1) When a draft is declared the Regular Army is replaced by the US Army, and all former members of the Regular Army get new, higher US Army ranks. (2) Veterans from each professional/regular army Division get “voluntold” to transfer to otherwise brand new divisions and become their senior officers and NCOs, while their places in their old units are taken by other veterans moving up the chain and eventually backfilled with OTHER new recruits. (3) Every Army Division we’ve ever had has SOME historian in charge of maintaining their old regalia, battle honors etc, which are waiting in mothballed deep storage for the essentially new Divisions who inherited their name and number to look over and build their espririt d’corps and identity around. (4) Every bit of how basic training is supposed to work is written down in excruciating detail so the new senior NCOs and officers of these new units know exactly how to run boot camp when the actual career drill sergeants are dying of overwork.
