    You also gotta remember, the HMMWV's weren't meant to be driven into the "war" part of the war zone. It was meant to be driven up to a certain point and then get out and walk at most, as well as a workhorse. They weren't meant to be an APC or IFV style vehicle.

    I can accept a vehicle being parked in multiple spaces because it’s too big for one, or like in Adam Sandler’s Bedtime Stories where if the work truck is damaged it comes out if your paycheck.
    Those I get.
    But when you’re parking a car that can damn well fit in one spot comfortably in multiple spots, you’re a piece of garbage.

    • @ShiningDarknes
      @ShiningDarknes Před 3 dny

      No, you are a piece of garbage for being a civilian driving a vehicle that is not designed for civilian roads and parking spaces. If it is a semi, sure whatever but those guys usually park in the middle of nowhere in the parking lot but if it is just an oversized truck that doesn't have any marking designating it as some sort of service vehicle... no you had a choice when you bought that _thing_ to ummmm no buy it and proceed to drive it everywhere. Like if you have one of these gass-guzzlers that has its range measured in gallons per mile instead of miles per gallon clearly you have another vehicle why are you driving that monster to the store?

    5:15 the engine was speced out in the 70s, when the hummwv was up armored , instead of respecing the engine (which is basically introducing an entirely new vehicle) they just added turbos to the specs.
    10:00 every former military has scouted their local base/armor in case of collapse.

  • @Ratkill9000
    @Ratkill9000 Před 24 dny +7

    Another thing to keep in mind, the width of a Humvee is about the same width of a dually truck at the outer tire. So measure the width of like a Ford F350 dual rear wheel axle go from the outer tire to outer tire and that's the track width of a Humvee about 95". The idea was for it to be in the track width of tanks or at least that's what i have read.
    Another thing is, these have a 6.5L GM diesel engine or in case of the older ones a 6.2L GM diesel. Both are indirect injected, only the 6.5 had a turbocharger. The 6.2L was about 130hp and like 260ft/lba of torque. I think the 6.5 turbo had around 190hp...they had higher power numbers than the civilian versions and also lacked emissions. If you found like a 80s CUCV like an M1008, M1009, etc there is a Emissions exempt sticker under the hood as per DoD.
    I've looked at getting a Humvee or an old CUCV and the CUCV are over priced now. Humvees just have expensive tires.
    Maintenance on a Humvee is a bit more expensive, but only because there's extra areas that need to be serviced. Also the brakes are inboard and not outboard at the wheels. It was another way they increased ground clearance along with the portal axles.
    If you watch the maintenance video that ChrisFix did on his Hummer H1 he got a few years ago, other than the Duramax diesel under the hood and that also being a civilian vehicle, most of the maintenance is the same on that as the Humvee.

  • @Ratkill9000
    @Ratkill9000 Před 24 dny +5

    I would own a Humvee right now, if it weren't for the fact that tires for them are about $3000-3700 for a set of 4 brand new. They are 37x12.5R16.5. Meaning 37" diameter, 12.5" wide, on a 16.5" rim. A rim size that has been long discontinued which also dosen't help.

    Military HMMWV had a 4 cylinder diesel engine. It was never meant to drive more than 45 mph. Pretty great off-road capability though- as long as you had an original soft skin 4-door or cargo version. One you added armor, it sucked everywhere. When I was in the Army, I spent a year as a HMMWV driver.
    The windshield is actually at 92 degree angle. Reason is to prevent glare from the windshield to alert presence to scouting aircraft. Remember that it was designed in the late 1970s, when we still worried about scout aircraft.

    The canvas tops for the old Hummers was because they were never actually intended to serve in a combat zone. They were supposed to be a behind-the-lines utility vehicle in the same vein as the old open-topped jeeps, not an actual armored car. The thinking was, if your HMMWV is getting shot at, then you did something terribly wrong. Unfortunately, the designers didn't have low-intensity asymmetrical warfare in mind, where insurgents could be anywhere and everywhere, ready to take potshots or set IEDs by the roadside. In Iraq and to a lesser extent Afghanistan, there was no real "behind-the-lines" area, because the war was all around them, all the time. So they up-armored the HMMWVs to survive in that kind of environment, which ended up converting the things from rear-area transports to light armored cars and completely warped and changed the doctrine of how they were supposed to be used.

    You wanna know the funny thing about electric vehicles? They want BIG RIGS to be all electric, California is making the push for this. My biological father is a long haul trucker, I've actually been on 2 hauls with him. One in spring and one in winter....we were up in Michigan and waiting for the stuff to be ready to pick up the next day. It dropped down into like...-20 minimum...I'm southern born and raised, that was the FIRST time I ever experienced anything in the negatives....my dad's rig is a diesel and it nearly froze out the rig. The rig that had been RUNNING all night to keep us warm and to try and prevent the freezing out of said engine...we were on the road when it stalled out and he had to get it going again because it was so cold. When I hear about electric big rigs I just start laughing my butt off cause I know that dog won't hunt. If a cellphone battery starts fritzing out in that kind of weather and anything close to -20 or lower starts to stall a diesel engine I KNOW an all electric one won't work....that's not even talking about the charging times it would take for something that big and the power it would need to haul heavy loads.

    Most of the OIF invasion HMMWVs were indeed canvas soft tops. We started getting the turbo diesel versions in about 06. Mind you, HMMWV production ended in like 04. They replaced the engines with GMC Sierra 3500 turbo diesels. Also changed the electrical system from 12 Volt to 24 Volt. That was so you could add the bolt on AC to the back of the up armored HMMWVs. Which is basically just a window AC bolted on.

  • @sierramike0913
    @sierramike0913 Před 20 dny

    So, I have a story to write, but because I also have comments, that's going in another comment.
    I have driven HMMWVs on public roads and on freeways. It's a very scary experience trying to get that beast to the speed limit, while being in a convoy. You technically have a mirror to see if there is anything on the right side of the vic, but good luck actually being able to use it. Also, the speedometer caps out at like 60 MPH. I was able to get the needle of it to get below that. Wish I took a picture of it, but I was driving at the time on a busy freeway and was trying to not die (and get my CO killed as well... nothing like putting the XO and CO in the same vehicle XD ).
    If you think that hospitals selling Tylenol for $80 is bad, never take a look at what government contractors get away with charging for very simple pieces of gear. $200k for a HMMWV is nothing compared to other parts. Heck in the early 2010's the USAF was still buying F4 Phantom parts, and that airframe was fully retired decades before then. At the same time, I've had to get into slap fights with big Army in order to secure funding to get bullets to do weapons qual. Budgeting in the military is bipolar at the best of times.
    Asking new soldiers to track down the HMMWV keys is an old snipe hunt. Like asking for a Kevlar stretcher, a box of grid squares, some chem-light batteries, or 50-feet of shore line. As others have pointed out, military vehicles don't use a key ignition system because of the liability in a combat scenario. If the guy with the key gets killed (or worse, gets turned into a red mist) you will have to waste a LOT of time trying to find the key (if it even still exists) and pray that it is undamaged enough to be able to turn the vehicle on. Not worth the risk. Instead, we have to follow an annoying set of steps to turn the various vehicles on that aren't always the same and are never instinctive. The amount of times I've had to explain how to turn a HMMWV on to an 11B that ran to me crying about how it won't start is... Well, let's just leave it at the next idiot that sends me a 5988 (think document to report vehicle issues) with the fault being "Doesn't start" and there isn't anything wrong with the vehicle will have grown gills by the time he's done mopping the rain.

    Though to be fair, in combat you don’t like keys. As in „welp, we’re now three guys, 20miles from base and some asshat IED‘d the driver, now we leave our crap here and walk 20 miles home through the desert, despite the humvee being absolutely fine…“
    Having no keys means everyone can drive it away, which is probably a good thing in a combat zone, less good in peacetime, so you guard that crap, or put some random masterlock and chain on it…

    It’s even worse when the LMTV tries to go uphill. I love FP 69 North as much as anyone else, but those hills are killer on our humvees and LMTVs because we are legit PEDAL TO THE FLOOR going 5mph uphill while the engine is screaming at you that it wants to go back home.
    if you do not have a running start before going up ANY incline, you are going to spend a few minutes going 5 mph

    I get mad at the trucks that are parked over multiple spots if it’s blatantly obvious that the truck is not used as a truck but is bedazzled and lifted up to the point that a slow turn can cause it to tip over. At that point, you’re just doing it for attention. I have also noticed a correlation that the more bedazzled a truck is, the closer to the front of the lot and more spaces they take, where as the people who drive the oversized trucks who actually use them will generally park near the back of the lot to not be an inconvenience to other people.

    They are like riding around in a depth charged german submarine in ww2 with your feet in a 5 gallon bucket sitting on a boat cushion, at speeds above 40mph they don go much faster bit make a lot more noise and feed like you are attempting to re enter the earths atmophere. You scream at the guy next to you 5 feet away as loud as you can, HOW FAST ARE WE GOING, WE HAVE A HILL AHEAD, 32MPH? THAT CAN'T BE RIGHT, HMMWV GETS LOUDER, AND SLOWS DOWN.

    HMMWV don't have keys because you need to be able to jump into other peoples shit and drive away if you need to, or to salvage a situation that has gone wrong.

    The way that military procurement and design works:
    US politician/oversight committee: "Will this work?"
    Military: "Yes, but-"
    Politico: "You said yes! Make it happen."
    It doesn't matter if that 'but' is followed by '-but there are cheaper and more functional options available' or '-but it's going to explode the first time it's hit by anything bigger than to BB.' or '-but it's going to become effectively useless due to the weight of the upgrades.' One of the reasons that the US military is so effective is that they've made a habit of finding the best ways to utilize the results of piss-poor government decisions.

    6:09 what is the torque figure on em? 170hp is terrible even nowadays hatchbacks make that but hp is not important on weight i hear it's a turbo diesel so probs 6.7? I mean that's at least what it should be but 9000 lbs needs sum serious torque to move it especially all terrain where humvees should go

    Story time. Names removed to protect the guilty, and language censored thanks to CZcams being CZcams.
    Okay, so no s&#%, there I was, at LOG-BOLC (logistical officer version of AIT, aka Officer MOS training) when my class was told about this gem by one of the cadre there. He was a Lieutenant (LT) at the time, and had just transferred to a new company as its commander and finished signing all of the documents. He decided to go check on the motor pool and meet some of his joes and check on all of his new equipment. When he got there, with his First Sergeant (1SG) in tow, he did a quick inspection of his vehicles. He noticed one in the back and when he asked about it, his 1SG told him, "Don't worry about it, sir."
    To which the LT said, "Well, I signed for it, so I need to worry about it." They went back and forth a bit on it before the 1SG sighed and they walked over to it.
    This vehicle was the Company Commander's HMMWV. Emphasis on *was*. Everything had been stripped off it, and I do mean EVERYTHING. No engine, no doors, no tires, no bed, no seats, no dashboard, no steering wheel, no radio, no axels, no wheels, nothing. Even the rivets were removed. It was the frame of a HMMWV and that's all. When the now-shocked LT asked his 1SG what happened, the 1SG explained how, before he arrived, the Battalion Commander (BC) wanted to get his battalion up to gunnery to get certain qualifications done, and refused to accept that there were vehicles down due to various deadlining faults (Army for "vehicle is not safe to use" or "vehicle is not mission capable"). So the previous company commander ordered them to turn that HMMWV into a hanger queen and get every other vehicle up.
    Now, this is something the Army allows soldiers to do HOWEVER it requires approval at the Battalion Commander level and a memo (signed by the BC) showing that authorization. When the LT asked for the memo, the 1SG said that it didn't exist and none of the cannibalization was documented. Now, since LT had already signed the paperwork (including a hand receipt for all the vehicles), that means that the fault of that vehicle being stripped of parts is all on the LT.
    LT left the motor pool, went straight to his office, and typed up a memo for record explaining everything that happened. He saved a copy of it, printed one out, signed it, and hid it in one of his desk drawers. He then went to his 1SG and asked him to take him to two of the company's "most Redneck m^%$erf^%&ers" (his words, not mine XD) and ordered them to forget all other tasks, and just get that HMMWV back into working shape.
    It took those two soldiers TWO YEARS to rebuild that vehicle from effectively scratch. Every month or two, the vehicle would be deadlined for some part that the two were working on, like clockwork. Thankfully, this task was aided by the fact that there was a military scrap yard with plenty of HMMWVs right next to the motor pool, so those two soldiers working on the hanger queen were able to acquire the parts needed to fix it with minimal questions and 100% legit parts requests. After those two years, the vehicle was perfectly serviceable and not a single person outside the company knew what happened and the LT (who had been promoted to Captain by this point in the story) was able to transfer to another unit without the BC finding out about the hanger queen.
