McArthur had a direct order from FDR so that he would not fall into Japanese hands since McArthur was hero in eyes of civilians
And if he didn't, he would have been killed or captured by the Japanese. If captured, he might spill military secrets to them because of torture. The best choice was to leave. Anything else would have prolonged the war, and the Philippines would have been in Japan's hands for longer.
Yeah, MacArthur did not want to leave the Philippines. He was straight up ignoring advice from other generals and admirals to leave. It had to take those direct orders for him to leave cause that he couldn’t ignore. This is why before he left he made his famous declaration that “I shall return.” Also, quite the deva in terms of listening to others which in the end got him in trouble with President Truman during the Korean War.

I learned about Unit 731 because I saw a hardcore band from Pittsburgh named "Unit 731" and looked them up after the show and only got info on the war crimes and not a band.

Definitely a good distinction. A modern bunker buster such as the Howitzer-based GBU-28 he discussed in another video would easily make it through this thing. But doing so took nearly a century of advancement.
But pretty much nothing short of that. I'm fairly confident that aside from modern bunker busters you would need something like a nuclear bomb to actually erase it and up until high end yields the thing to kill the crew would be radiation though the air vents and not the blast.

He was. He barely left before the resistance collapsed. He was also retired, and only agreed to cone back into service to protect the Philippines
Main things you hear about the Pacific is: Pearl Harbor, Midway, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the A-bombs. Rest of the stuff you kind of have to actually look into, like the Philippines, Guadalcanal, Saipan (a.k.a. Pacific D-day), Coral Sea, Leyte Gulf, and many other battles, as well as the atrocities carried out by the Japanese during those times (like the Bataan Death March). Interestingly enough, Saipan and Guadalcanal even have semi-recent movies based off said battles (Windtalkers and Thin Red Line respectively), both of which I personally like
Yeah it's probably cause of the a bombs. There's so much of a push to say that they were cruel and unnecessary that they hide the fact that the Japanese absolutely got what was coming to them and that would absolutely ruin their claims.
MacArthur was ordered out by FDR to avoid the humiliation the British suffered when Singapore fell in having a high ranking General forced to surrender to the Japanese. He would have stayed to the last, but didn't believe he could refuse a presidential order and so left, famously declaring 'I will return'.
He also was against using the nukes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, instead wanting to invade the home islands as he didn't believe the science fiction he figured the bombs were.

I never claimed he was a good man. The idiot was willing to send hundreds of thousands of American men to a fucking meat grinder invading Japan because he felt slighted. He also OUT RANKED the man left behind, so YES, it would have been more humiliating for MacArthur to have been captured. It is not a theory that he was ordered out. He WAS ordered to leave by Roosevelt. I never stated he would have stayed because he was selfless. He would have stayed because he would have preferred to fight and die with 'honor' than accept he was in a loosing situation. Or seek a way to evacuate US and Pilipino soldiers to continue the fight where there was less of a disadvantage.
You seem to be under the impression I like McArthur. I don't. The man was as bad as Patton was ego wise, with few of the tactical acumen traits that only slightly redeemed Patton. He was ordered out by Presidential order, that is a KNOWN fact. not a fabrication written by later historians like the Third Wave myth of Pearl Harbor. My statement about him being against the use of nuclear weapons was a shot at his idiocy and need for blood instead of taking the option that might end the war quicker with far fewer casualties overall.

At that point they were a proven weapon, so he was all for using them then. It was understandable to be skeptical before they were used as few military leaders not in the loop would likely believe a single bomb could utterly level a city when hundreds of bombers dropping thousands of bombs didn't. Something to clarify about with the sinking of the USS Maine and the Spanish American War, the sinking of the USS Maine was part of an extremely far reaching world domination initiative called "Manifest Destiny", which started with the purging of almost all native americans, the conquest, vassalization, and eventual integration of the hawaiian islands, claiming cuba, guam and puerto rico from spain, and the purchase of the philippines to america for a paltry $20,000,000. Which personally i find gravely insulting, as if we were treated like some sort of commodity.
For context, Spain at this point wasnt doing too well considering their monarchy was falling apart and they were losing their grip on the colonies they tortured for five centuries. Spain had no political power left and america could have easily conquered them.
What they dont tell you is that the whole thing was staged, the USS Maine was either likely sunk by an onboard accident that detonated its magazine, or was deliberately sunk by america. Either way it gave America the Casus Belli they needed to go to war with spain, and more importantly the Spanish Territories of Central America, Micronesia, and Southeast Asia.
Additionally the Spanish American war by philippine historian accounts was also staged, the entire naval battle in manila bay was a ruse and all the ships that were sunk were empty husks without a single person aboard, the "battle" itself was so lethargic that it almost appeared to be a naval exercise instead of a battle of attrition.
The surrender of the Philippines to america was clearly planned in advance by both america and spain since it was sold too quickly, the agreement was drawn up too fast and without any ratifications, and the payment was already ready before the ink had a chance to dry. The deal was finalized with the Treaty of Paris in December 10, 1898. The Spanish American War in total only lasted all of 10 weeks, which is the most telltale sign for how rigged it was.
Let me also clarify that we all consider our "first" (puppet) President Emilio Aguinaldo as a traitor for empowering America to conquer the Philippines and deny our Independence from us. And i personally would love to strike him off the Official Register of Historic Philippine Presidents if i could.
Spain was well aware that they were going to lose the Philippines either way since by this point the KKK (Kataastaasang, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan" / Supreme and Honorable Society of the Children of the Nation) and their War of Independence was already drawing to a close with almost total control over the philippines, we had almost won our independence all by ourselves. Then america showed up and insulted our tenacity and will to be a free nation by making the Philippines a protectorate state of America. We did not allow it, and so the Philippine American War began almost immediately after the Spanish American war and was a stalemate for 3 years before Heneral Andrés Bonifacio called a cessation of hostilities due to not wanting to see any more bloodshed. At this time the annexation of the Philippines by Imperial America was met with very negative domestic sentiment by the american people and their rallying cry for supporting Philippine Independence forced the Imperialist Government to concede and promised to reform the Philippines gradually with a transitional government until eventually leading to formal Independence. But well, WW2 got in the way of that and things went t1ts waaay up. We were eventually granted Independence in July 4, 1946. But most filipinos prefer to believe that we were already free from the moment we broke away from the Tyrannical 500 year Spanish rule and consider our independence as June 12, 1898.
Most americans today dont even know that the philippine american war ever happened, but it did. And i'd like to think it helped america grow into the freedom loving country it is today, even if they are spending entires nations GDP's worth on freedom dispensers.
Since then the Philippines became America's closest and oldest ally in asia with a mutual defense treaty & enhanced defense cooperation agreement as part of the 1st island chain defensive line; we were the 5th state to recognize south koreas sovereignty and independence, and helped america and the UN in the korean war, as well as being the only asian country to vote in favor of the creation of israel. With 32 votes for, 13 against, and 10 abstentions, the philippines was the final vote (2/3 majority) that decided whether or not israel would exist today. In line with that the philippines also made a commitment at the time to shelter jews from around the world in 1934, under the admittance of President Manuel L. Quezon and U.S. High Commissioner Paul V. McNutt.
And on the South Koreans side of the fence, besides our contributions during the US & UN led counteroffensive in the korean war (particularly the Battle of Yultong and Battle of Eerie Hill); we assisted with the post-war efforts of rebuilding South Koreas economy and their peoples lives by building schools, roads, bridges, clinics, hospitals, etc. and dedicated huge swaths of our overseas workers to supporting the institutions built at the time, many of the republic of koreas laws, constitutions, and policies are either borrowed from or modified from the republic of the philippines counterparts. And our dedication to learning and teaching english early on influenced how South Korea eventually became the economic powerhouse it is today.
And you know what palestine? We dont regret it. We still believe to this day that the jews deserved salvation from their persecutions in ww2, and that they deserved to return to their ancestral home. While you dont deserve any pity or quarter for what you have done, you, the iranians, and whoever else thinks its funny to make terror groups with "plausible deniability" hocus pocus bs, dont deserve another chance after so many concessions and peace deals. There is nowhere on the internet that calls the Spanish American War rigged, the sinking of the Maine was most definitely an accident and it wasn’t the only reason, with Cuba’s struggle for independence and yellow journalism also being a factor in the war, also the war started in April 21st and ended in December. 10 weeks doesn’t equal 7 months, 2 weeks, and 5 days. I have looked into the internet and couldn’t find any site that stated who voted what in the creation of Israel so I can’t say anything against that point. Both South Korea and the Philippines had their system influenced by the United States, especially South Korea during the Cold War, and finally, the leader of Palestine has denounced Hamas, just won’t go public with it due to the ongoing war in Gaza.

General MacArthur acrually wanted to stay & "share the fate of the garrison" either surrender or fight to the end.
The only reason he left is because FDR told him to leave, him being one of the more experienced American generals in regards to fighting the Japanese at the time, FDR probably made the right call.

13:00 -ish: Full disclosure, I am no fan of MacArthur; if you want to know why, we'll be here all day...However, giving credit where it is due, Doug only went to Australia when FDR specifically ordered him to go. Personally, I would have told him to stay on Corregidor to the end, but since MacArthur had spent the previous almost-two-decades being the face of the US Army, and had propped himself up as a heroic figure to both the American and Filipino people, _and_ FDR was in dire need of heroes in 1942, FDR ordered him to escape.....But MacA was still a douche: middling staff guy, okay tactical leader, terrible strategic commander - which was why Marshall was made Chief of Staff of the Army (the Army's top commander), and later Secretary of State, instead of MacA.
MacArthur also rolled tanks on US military vets (the Bonus Army) during the Great Depression and tried to court-martial Wainwright for cowardice after the latter surrendered the Philippine Garrison to Japan

In RI, we glazed over internment camps, and in NC, we did the same in Civics when we glazed over Koramatsu vs. The US, but we didn’t go over it much. I know what I do because I had a great uncle who was on a battleship during a Pacific battle, but I'm not sure which.

In McArthurs case yes he was ordered to leave by FDR so it's fine (orders are orders). He was, however a duche and a mid skill commander that got lucky a few times (and started believing his own hype). Pearl harbour sent out a radio message that they were attacked by Japan, and any normal CO would have put the forces under his command on alert (since you know...war). He did not and that's why Japan got the islands so fast. Japan would have still gotten them (probably) but it would have taken more time and cost more of their soldiers lives to conquer the Philipines.
The only thing I remember learning about the Pacific front in WW2 was the Japanese attack on China, Imperial Japan's treatment of it's citizens and prisoners, the Yamato, and the atomic bombs. All other knowledge of the Pacific front is from the internet.
It is scary how overlooked the Pacific front is compared to the European front.
We literally in my school took 1 day to go over the entire ww2 I was so annoyed i waited all year to learn more on it .
In fairness to teachers, they could have been rushed by the approved ciriculum.
This is awesome. I get to watch fat electrician videos with his original content and then a few days later I get to watch kip expand on his historical points and the laugh just makes my day. For ever FE video I then turn around and rewatch with Kip. It’s great.
the alpine theatre was VERY much active in WW1. Isonzo for example having 13 battles taking place at that one location alone for example.
You learn more about the Japanese side of the war going to school in East TN because of the local history connection with building the first reactors and bombs. I remember going to the science museum as a kid and they had full scale models of several nukes including Fat Man and Little Boy. You can take a tour of ORNL and visit the X-10 reactor and go in the control room where they have the logbook in a display case open to the page where it was logged that criticality was first achieved. There are a few days a year where you can also go inside the fence to the visitors center at Y-12 but you have to be a US citizen and sign up for the tour months and months in advance and agree to a deep background check. Normally you have to have top secret / DOE Q clearance to even be allowed through the gate and that includes security guards and janitors.

And for history education in Idaho, I actually did learn about the Pacific theatre, but not as detailed as I would have liked. I think that was down to my teacher having been a WW2 vet in the Pacific.

So in Idaho growing up we learned about pearl harbor and the battle of midway I think the most in the Pacific. Didn't learn a whole lot about Okinawa and then learned about iwa jima and obviously the atomic bombs. But that was really it from the Pacific theatre. We learned mostly about the European side of things
Theoretically if the crew of Ft. Drum wanted to continue fighting, there would be ways for them to have legally done so. If they believed they would not be properly treated as POWs, which is what happened, they could have disobeyed the surrender order for safety reasons. If they believed the order was in error, or that the officer who ordered it did not have the authority to do so, that would also be grounds for ignoring it. But this is also based on the modern UCMJ, I’m not sure what it was like in the 40’s
MacArthur did not leave voluntarily. He was ordered to leave by FDR on Feb 20 1942
While the fall of the Philippines wasn't entirely MacArthur's fault given wider events he certainly bares responsibility for the US forces under his command being unprepared and taken by surprise by the initial Japanese assault. Events after that were entirely beyond his control with no reinforcements or supplies due to the lack of naval support available the Philippines was always going to be lost. Most of the set back's America suffered during the war could have been avoided or mitigated if not for complacency and arrogance at all levels of command. Some American officers had been acting as observers in the European theatre since the beginning and the British had been back channeling intelligence and technology for years. For example a British supplied radar station had been installed at Pearl Harbour but the chain of command had largely ignored it's existence not bothering to understand its value and failing to ensure the personnel were properly trained in it's use. As such the operator on the day of the attack saw the incoming Japanese attack's first wave but miss identified it as the daily mail plane because of his lack of training on the equipment. Omaha beach was the bloodiest and hardest fought landing on D day largely because the landing forces ignored RN advice and refused assistance in navigating the treacherous channels leading to most of the first wave of landing craft hitting sand bars and dropping their troops and specialized tank support too far from the beach. US troops were then forced to tackle German fortifications head on without sufficient armour support because most or their armour had sunk into the waves or gotten stuck attempting to get to the beach. The only reason the attack succeeded was the bravery of the grunts holding out until allied forces from the neighbouring beaches could break out and out flank the German defenders. Far too often in that war undertrained and over eager American boys had to pay a price in blood for their commanders refusal to accept guidance from battle hardened British officers who had been fighting for years at this point. This caused some strained relationships when British officer's became frustrated angry and bitter at watching lessons they had paid for in blood cost lives all over again for no good reason.

With Phillipines, it was only involved in the Spanish American War because the Phillipines was a Spanish colony. So the only real legit fight in the last century and a half was against the Japanese conquering it in their ww2 expansion.
The interesting world history thought experiment for me is...what might have happened had other prior things gone differently? What if USA never took over Phillipines? What if Phillipines was, say, a German colony (or Dutch colony the Germans had taken earlier in ww2)?

As far as the Soldier if Heaven comment goes, I believe there was fighting in the alps for a bried period and you had both factions staring eachother down on opposite sides worried they would sneaking around the mountain. On white Friday both sides shelled eachothers mountain range causing avalanches and dooming thousands of men stationed there. After that i think use of the mountains was diminished but before that i believe there was fighting.
As many said, MacArthur was ordered out by FDR. *HOWEVER*, MacArthur is hated because he blocked General Wainwright from receiving the Medal of Honor and even wanted to court martial Wainwright for cowardice for surrendering to the Japanese (which is a capital offense). MacArthur only backed off when the rest of the top ranked officers and all the men who survived the Japanese POW camps rose hell for his temerity.
Also, MacArthur was already hated because he ordered the breakup of the Bonus Army by using tanks to disperse a tent city of WWI vets who were camping out on Capitol Hill in protest over being screwed out of money Congress had promised them in exchange for volunteering to fight in that war. That's right: General MacArthur rolled tanks on a bunch of unarmed WWI vets who only wanted to get paid money that was their due.

McArthur should have been Court Marshalled for dereliction of duty. Both commanding general and admiral of Pearl Harbor were Court Marshalled for the surprise attack. MacArthur had 10 hours of warning of the attack. Entire Air Force in the Philippines destroyed on the ground. As well as most of the Navy ships there. Then ordered no contesting of Japanese landings. Then didn't do sh t from 41' to 44' but be a pain in the ass of command. While hiding in Australia. He was the best general the Japanese had.
And together know US Marines weren’t in charge. As we woulda fist fought the IJN navy and Yamato. Vs surrendering, so the navy /army surrendered.

In the military you are to follow the Orders of the Officers appointed above you unless those orders violate the US Constitution , the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) which mostly mirrors US Civilians Law except the Punishments can be more server depending on the violation. And if you commit a crime in civilian society you can and likely will be charged in the military as well.
Also in the case of the laws of war a soldier may refuse orders . Officers know this and will themselves refuse to issue illegal orders. The Military is very black and white when it comes to orders, laws and regulations .
