    There is a statue of Sgt. Reckless at Camp Pendleton, funded by donations. There is also a similar statue of her at the Kentucky Horse Park, and one at the Marine Corp Heritage Center in Virginia. I think that every person who has worked with horses in the US knows her story. A few months ago I went to Sabaton's song suggestion site and made the suggestion that they feature Sgt. Reckless and all of the animals that have also served in many wars, in one of their songs. It will probably never happen but these animals do deserve to be honored for what they have done.

    The Chinese chewed garlic because it's been used since forever for its natural antibiotics, and when chewed raw acts as a mild "stimulant". It's like a chewable coffee that might stop you getting sick... so exactly what armies would want.
    Many armies have done/do it. Russia is another notable example. The French used onions for a food supply, since they could grow almost anywhere and can be harvested in a matter of days. Be planted by one section and by the time the next gets there, they can be harvested as they plant the next lot and so on. It had similar properties to the garlic, and they would chew garlic when it was available.
    > Garlic has been used as an antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal agent. It may help the body resist or destroy viruses and other microorganisms. It does this by boosting the immune system. Garlic is also claimed to fight infections.

    I certainly don't remember learning about the Korean war in school, but I am a fan of old war movies and TV shows, including M.A.S.H, which is set during the Korean War. Watching the old movies and TV shows, can really give you at least a decent idea of what happened during those wars. Some of my favorite old war TV shows, while being comedies, are also really informative about their respective wars, such as Hogan's Heroes, McHale's Navy, and M.A.S.H.

      @nadjasunflower1387 Před 4 měsíci +1

      yup...not many people know this. they think just because it's " ended " that there was a peace settled. In actuality it's just been an extended cease fire all along. which is why the North was crapping themselves in the 70's when the " World War Tree " incident happened. Because they knew by this time they were no match for what would be coming at them if it got " hot " again.

    I mean, when I was in school, the history books had chapters on the Korean and Vietnam wars, but by the time you had a couple of snow days and an assembly and spent longer than expected on a couple of things, you never actually got around to them, because they were the last chapters at the end of the book (not counting the dumb final chapter that tried to predict the future and was already proven wrong before the book made it off the printing press, 15 years before you arrived in class; no history teacher in the history of history has ever even *planned* to get around to that chapter).

    As to the beer drinking horse question yes absolutely! You can feed beer to horses! Horses can develop a condition called anhydrosis which in short means they don’t sweat. The beer is actually a treatment for that as it causes a horse to sweat. Sgt. Reckless in this case drank beer simply because the other marines did!

    Great reaction, I had the benefit of knowing more about the Korean War than most because 2 of my uncles fought in it. My dad was in Vietnam, and my Grandfather was on Omaha beach and showed me the 6 bullet holes he got just trying to get off the lander. So I have always had an interest in war history. Later found out that both sides of my family has fought in every War America has been in even the British French war, before the Revolutionary War. Sadly that custom ended with me. I would have been in the Gulf War, but 3 days before shipping out I was hit in a hit and run and it took a year to learn to walk again. Navy said no thanks.

    My Grandpa was a drill sergeant in the korean war, and the stories he told were wild. The one I remember vividly is...
    A general comes to check on troop training, is up in a tower with troops in lines to the left and right. Down one line was a quad 50 cal turret. Sometimes troops can't handle the turret, it overwhelms their senses and they lock up. This happened and the turret starts walking towards the lined up troops and the general. My grandpa tried prying the troops hands off, slapping him, anything he could think of, eventually he had to beat him in the head with his "steel pot" (helmet) to knock him out so he could stop him, luckily no one was seriously hurt.

Yeah. Common sense is a rare commodity. Where I’m from, we call it “asking for rainbows and unicorns”. LMAO. Sounds crazy. I know. But that’s how it goes. I remember the year i asked for a package (1 of each) red pens, blue pens, and black pens for supplies. I LITERALLY got a response back asking if I was “asking for art supplies”. Red = corrections. Blue = legal. Black = everything else. IT WAS THEIR OWN RULES! My ability to reply back with a “fuck no you assholes” was withheld and I responded as I should in order to receive what I needed. Meanwhile, we hadn’t exhausted our supply budget with what we asked for, and with my superiors not wanting to go without next year (because if we could live off of less this year then obviously we could live off of less NEXT year), I ended up with A PALLET of staples. Yes. Staples. My unit doesn’t even deal in that much paper! But! We had to spend the money we didn’t need or we wouldn’t get that same budget next year.

    13:20 would touching America's horse come second to touching America's boats when it comes to US opening a can of whoopass?
    Or perhaps third after saying Americans are too cowardly to fight with bayonets (Millet).

    I didn't serve, but I was a GS army civ. Common sense, is not common, and one of the quotes from a 14 at the time that always stuck with me was "Stupid needs to die". Mission objective was always the goal, but god damn fuck the bullshit as much as possible, and what I learned from those officers, NCOs, and much higher GS personal helped me to succeed to where I am now 15 years later.

    Plus in my state, the history track was also responsible for covering civics and geography. So may have only had around two-thirds the time to focus on history topics as math, science, or english tracks had to cover their subjects.
