@@scotthill1600 I’d have to talk to my uncles since he’s the one who taught me all this stuff however I have a letter from Daly to my great grandfather regarding a self defense shooting he got in when he was at a gas station off base in Pendleton supporting his character which my great grandfather won the case but was kicked out the Marine corps only to reenlist into the army air corps and would be stationed at Pearl Harbor for years into the Pearl Harbor bombing.

The funny thing is from what I gathered from accounts is Dan Daly said afterwards he didn't remember saying "Come on you SOBs! Do you want to live Forever?", but the various Marines who witnessed his actions on that day were very adamant that he did say it.

I've studied history in The Netherlands and this topic was discussed at a serious level! 'Why did'nt the Americans retreat?' The phrase 'Retreat? Hell, we just got here!' was also mentioned. Some historians argue that they did'nt retreat because the Americans did'nt know how horrific those battles were and the low morale of the Germans after years in the trenches. But I found out morale was actually high in the German army at that time. They just never faced US soldiers before and were surprised by their strong abillity to fight. And in a way those soldiers did live forever. In the history books. ❤

If your related to General Patton, then you are somewhat (potentially) related to the Greatest Marine of all time as well. General Lewis B “Chesty” Puller and General George Patton were second cousins.
Also, I had two relatives that fought at Belleau Wood - including my Great Grandfather and a distant uncle. My Uncle was an LT and then a Captain with 1/5 and 1/6 Marines. He would later lead the 5th Marine Division at Iwo Jima (he was the Commanding General of the Division itself, not the entire campaign). One of many reasons I joined the Marines back in 2009.

Some background facts about some of the events mentioned here:
Private Daly wasn't actually left completely alone at the Legation Center in Peking, but he WAS the only marine assigned to guard that particular approach to the building, and the other marines guarding the building were unable to leave their posts to back him up for fear of letting the rebels just walk right in from another direction and start slaughtering the civilians.
More than anything else, the Boxer Rebellion's particular hatred for Christian missionaries (and indeed the distrust of Christianity that is common in Chinese culture to this day) is mostly France's fault. After the Opium Wars, the Western Powers dictated terms to the Chinese Emperor at gunpoint, and one of France's terms was that Christians would be immune to prosecution in China. This was meant to curb persecution that had been happening already to Chinese Christians, but the inevitable result is that every two-bit rapist, murderer and bandit converted to Christianity and became above the law overnight. This lead to the popular perception in China that Christianity was an evil religion that brought horror, criminality, corruption and hardship wherever it went. The moral of the story? Well, considering how some of France's other historical treaty negotiations and demands have gone (looking at you, Versailles) I think the lesson here is "never let the French negotiate peace, because they WILL fuck it up for everyone."
During the night when Dan Daly recovered his company's machine gun from the bottom of that river, what TFE didn't mention is that he encountered three rebel scouts and had to quickly and silently kill them in CQC with his combat knife to keep them from alerting their buddies that he was there. Then, Daly calmly went back to fishing the machine gun out of the water like nothing happened. That encounter was a big part of why he won his second MoH.

unrelated to Daly's story, just the movie clip of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. @10:24 'ish
During the shoot of that scene it was supposed to be a long drawn out fight scene. However that morning Harrison Ford woke up with a 103 or 104'ish fever. Not wanting or feeling like having to do an extended action scene he did what common sense would tell any man who was facing down a sword wielder would do if he had a gun on his side....just shoot him an walk away. LOL
It was a bit of improv due to health reasons and worked amazingly well in the movie.

The Silent Film "Tell It To The Marines" (1926) has Lon Chaney playing A character very much based on Daly.
And "55 Days at Peking" (1963) is about the Boxer Rebellion.
Both were top tier films in their day.

I was awarded a Bronze Star with a V after I lead a Section of Recon Scouts during a complex ambush and got all my Soldiers out with only 1 minor injury and we still killed 9 enemy with 2 captured. I was really thankful about that. 1SG later on told me that it was originally submitted for a Silver Star with a V but because I was a E5 it didn't fit 4ID's policy on awards so it was downgraded.

As an NCO its not only your duty but moral obligation to look after your younger brothers by keeping an ear open to their troubles. If you want to learn more about history like this one. You guys need to react to SABATON. Is the most epic history metal band around. Devil Dogs which is the Dan Daily story, Bismarck and no bullet fly are 3 songs that will give you a history lesson like the Fat Electritian. The videos are fantastic.

I googled who has been the recipient of two medals of honour and there was a whole list of people who have so I must have missed heard the beginning when he said there were only two people who had won two

Only two members of the USMC were awarded multiple Medals of Honor. TFE did not include other branches when he listed the two recipients.

MoH is different per branch. USMC MoH is hard af to earn. There's some questionable army awards I've read in the past.

@@peternash7104 I, in my personal opinion think the current day tragedy of how the Navy tried to screw Sgt John Chapman out of his MOH if the Seal teams Commander he was operating with didn't get one too was disgustingly dishonorable ESPECIALLY since the majority of that event was captured by a CIA predator drone. Far as I know that commander tried several times to have his name and or the citation removed, weather that was while they were trying to get it for him or because of the blowback from almost everyone later on is unknown but I'll give a "Shooter" the benefit of the doubt, the flag officers, no fucking chance do they get that same courtesy after the details all dropped.

Ok I love the content that TFE puts out but of the few things he gets wrong in some videos here, some videos there. He gets Daly's age wrong quite abit in this throughout the video, there are absolutely more than two marines who have gotten the medal of honor twice, not counting all the other service members who have gotten it twice, I think he messed up a year or two somewhere too, and sadly, despite what some people still wish to believe, it has been proven to a point that the term "Devil dog" never came from the germans, the first recorded mention of it was an american printed newspaper, and there is no evidence that germans ever called the marines that.

I've come across an interesting discrepancy doing research of my own after reading this comment. The Medal of Honor Society does indeed list a few other Marines as having been award two Medals of Honor. However, The U.S. Department of Defense, as well as the Marine Corps University and the Military Times Hall of Valor all state that Smedley D. Butler and Dan Daly were the only two Marines to ever be awarded with two medals. So I can very easily see why that would be confusing to anyone doing research.

TFE made 2 mistakes here though, Daly was 26 or 27 at the boxer fight, not 18, and 2nd he was not the only one guarding the refugee's it was 3 machinegun squads but the first 2 got overrun quickly, leaving Daly to fend on his own.
