    I think it’s ironic. Mohammad Ali ditched his slave name, Cassius clay, arguably the most anti-slave name you could have.

    • @zdub93
      @zdub93 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Oh the irony is greater than just that, as the historical figure muhammad ali both owned and used slaves. So he ditched the name of an abolitionist hero and instead took the name of a slave owner ( who had both black and white slave btw). There's more to the story of why he did it but honestly this seems like yet another side effect of white people are the single greatest evil ever and everyone else is good. So yeah, layers of irony

    • @zdub93
      @zdub93 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Sorry, meant to say "the IDEA that white people are the greatest evil ever and everyone else is good" rarely leave replies so of course I mess it up

    • @rmartinson19
      @rmartinson19 Před 4 měsíci

      That's because Mohammed Ali was just another racist who hated the idea that he and his father were named after a white man. The absolutely hilarious irony is that by choosing an Arab name to get away from his "slave name", he picked a name from a culture that exploited and enslaved Africans for far longer and far more brutally than Europeans ever did.

    What TFE didn't mention about the Russian involvement in the Civil War is that Tzar Alexander II (who was a big believer in social reform and abolition) actually sent the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet to San Francisco, and part of its Baltic Fleet to New York carrying sealed orders. Those orders said that if France or Britain involved themselves in the war in any way, the Russian Navy was to consider itself at war, and would proceed to hunt down and destroy any British or French shipping they came across. The Russian Imperial Navy sailing into New York harbor as a show of unconditional support from the Tzar is one of the coolest moments from American history that has been almost completely forgotten by mainstream society.

    • @Gannet-S.4
      @Gannet-S.4 Před 3 měsíci +4

      As cool as it was, we saw how the Russian imperial navy performed against the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese war, it would of been basically impossible for them to actually go against the British or French fleets its just that it was easier to get more cotton from other colonies than it is to start another war.

    One thing he did not mention with the whole Russia during the Civil War is that Russia took it even further. Cassius actually witnessed Tzar Alexander II give sealed orders to the commanders of both the Russian Atlantic and Pacific Fleets and sent them to the East and West Coasts of the US and that the sealed orders were only to be opened IF Britain and France sided with the South.
    The US Secretary of the Navy wrote in his diary, after watching the Russian fleet arrive in New York harbor: "In sending these ships to this country, there is something significant. What will be its effect on France, and French policy, we shall learn in due time. It may be moderate, it may exacerbate. God bless the Russians."

    5:50 I don’t know how it is in other states but in Texas there is something called a mutual combat law. Basically, two people must tell the police that they are going to fight and that they both agree to it. They are then allowed to go at it and the police will only step in if it looks like someone is going to get a serious or fatal injury.
    However it must be a fistfight.

    Minor note here: "mayhem" is the legal jargon for "holy fuck, we didn't even think we needed to specify this in law" and usually is a catchall that will include such things as "cannibalism."
    No, not really, it's actually a common law term for the intentional removal of a body part that will debilitate someone and/or intentional maiming.
    Yes, this still includes cannibalism, and yes, that is a normal use of this common law charge.

    Hilariously, the only thing that even approaches an inaccuracy in this is the part about the Emancipation Proclamation. Not that Clay didn't push for Lincoln to free the slaves, both privately and publicly (and loudly), but because the main thing Lincoln was waiting for was a major Union victory.
    The Emancipation Proclamation would never be honored by the Confederacy, but it was never meant to really accomplish anything in the South that winning the war wouldn't accomplish. What it *would* do is make it virtually impossible for France and Great Britain to ever support the Confederacy, as both countries had already outlawed slavery themselves and wouldn't really be able to justify supporting a "country" founded to continue it. But without a major Union victory to at least make Europe think the Union was going to come out on top, it would have been fairly toothless at accomplishing the goal of keeping them from possibly joining in or intervening to push for some sort of peace treaty. As soon as Lincoln got one, the Emancipation Proclamation was made, and Europe was effectively prevented from intervening for the Confederacy the rest of the war.

    As far as Ideas for the next Fat Electrician vid you guys do, the problem is that there are so many that are awesome, that it's tough to pick just one to recommend, so, in that vein:
    The Most Gangster Marine of all time
    The Last Warchief
    Bat Bombs
    America's Secret Underground Cheese Bunkers
    Toilet Sinks U-Boat (a bit short, but still hilarious)
    Wake Island
    Grand Theft U-Boat
    - WW2 Vet Vs. HOA , Van T. Barfoot -
    Lewis Millet
    and last but not least
    Samuel 'Get off my lawn' Whittemore
    These are just SOME of the best I think, others are probably gonna have some they would add, and ALSO, those are in no particular order, they're ALL Awesome. It's pretty much consensus that if Nic were our history teacher, we would have all aced that fuckin class. His delivery is just like the days of smokin & jokin outside the motor pool/conex. Also, he says it on his youtube profile, but while he was in he was Doc, just FYI

    9:40 that's a guy that guys from zero to righteous wrath with no transition at all.
    18:31 if France AND England had recognized the south Russia wouldn't have been able to be particularly helpful but there was ZERO chance the Brits and the French work together against them so they'd probably tie up a lot of enemy military shipping.
    24:51 Why don't they teach about him? Because the public school system is designed to eliminate people like him so holding him up as the CLEAR hero he was is counter to their goals of turning out cogs for the machine. That's not beef, society NEEDS cogs but not at the expense of Heroes which the bureaucrats seem to forget.

    Do NOT ask Netflix for a movie about Cassius Clay. He will be portrayed as a Black LBTQ badass woman. Or maybe Asian. But a woman... which is what Netflix does.

    Though neither Britain or France wanted direct war with Russia during the US civil war, the threat from Russia about not siding with the Confederates was not in any way the deciding factor, there were a lot more politics and economics involved, plus by then, a huge anti-slavery sentiment in Britain (Britain had banned slavery throughout the Empire by 1832 and had been conducting anti-slavery patrols since 1808) At the time Britain had the most powerful navy in the world (the dictum at the time was that it had to be stronger than the next two most powerful navies put together). There is no way Russia could have beaten the British at sea and the Russians knew it. Russian Naval power was not strong enough. The British and the French had proven this during the Crimean War when they attacked and beat Russia in the Crimea in the 1854. Using Naval power they kept the supply lines open, shelled positions and brought troops to the Crimea forcing the Russians to withdraw. Losing in the Crimea weakened Russia and is one of the reasons they lost interest in Alaska and sold it to the US because they did not want their rival Britain to get it. Russia and Britain were involved in proxy wars (called the Great Game) throughout the 1800s and the support from the Russians for the North was part of that. In many ways it was an empty gesture, as they knew Britain and France had no intention in being involved in the US civil war due to huge anti-slavery public sentiment which favoured the North, and their more important interests elsewhere in the world. Britain never recognised the south as a country nor ever had a treaty with it and though cotton was important (even the English mill workers whose livelihoods depended on imported cotton supported the North against slavery) it was not as important as other factors and interests.
