To anyone saying "this can't be real, it could never happen" , I was in the NAVY. Yes, I believe it.
I also read about this and it was said FDR was mad they missed stating "How could you miss, it is a _____! Battleship." He did laugh about it and was glad things went the way they did.
I had the same thought!!
Doesn't surprise me though.
Well, to be fair to the crew, when you fire a torpedo at an enemy ship, you don't typically radio over to them to warn them that the torpedo is on the way and to turn. So it could have been a hit.
Anyone else hear Mushu from Mulan?
"How could you miss?! It was a f__king Battleship?!"
However, it was likely a Mark 14 torpedo, and therefore the President was in the safest place possible - directly in its line of fire.
Mark 14 was the submarine version. Mark 15 was the destroyer versions, and by November of the year this happened, they had FINALLY fixed the issues with them. So again adding to their unlucky status of doing this after the torpedo's finally work again.
@shannonrhoads7099 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂 ... Even though someone showed up to ruin your perfectly good joke, I still think it was a GREAT joke! hahahaha!!!
The base commander, probably: Don't come back. Leave and don't come back.
How does he get his lawn repaired? Gets some recruits to fix it? Or like no way he does it himself right? His property & he doesn’t want any paperwork so maybe he does do it himself or if he has kids, just get the kids to fill the hole
@@scotthill1600 Probably just punishment for anyone but these guys, since he just wanted them gone.
@@scotthill1600 But as Nick said, shit gets covered up all the time in the Military and Government. In the military screw ups that are capable of being swept under the rug are swept under the rug.
@@scotthill1600He'd just have a squad of seamen or Marines fix it. Officers are always looking for something to give enlisted to do.
77th army division you guys must react to this by him
Daniel, Nick uses official historic journals like the Naval Institute Press and the Marine Corps Historical Museum.
The Aleutian Islands are in the Barents sea. The Willie D got sent to the Barents Sea , fisherman's hell.....for a year. They did not get off light.
My mother's friend's husband - not as tenuous a relationship as you might think - told me stories of WWII.
He was my honourary granda and he was in the Royal Navy. He served on three ships which sank.
He told me tales which made me howl with laughter - I was 14 and it was all over and I was callous.
My great uncle received medals for being sunk, twice, because he was the bloke who saved 'someone important', twice. Other lads had only saved half a dozen ratings.
Another ship he was on was almost scuppered, yet managed to limp home and he was given the oak panelling from the officers' wardroom, as a gift, when his ship was decommissioned.
The staircase of his 'two up two down', in Blyth, Northumberland, was the talk of the town.
My mate's dad was a submariner, which makes him more mad than just about anyone. We had a bond in the belief that a hammock is the most comfortable place to rest a head.
My sister-in-law's dad was Latvian and his story is off the charts of any kind of believability. He was in Dresden when it was bombed and Belsen when it was liberated. He was one of those 'bloody immigrants'! Although, back then, we were proud of what we had all done together and knew that we had all played our part. We had been united against a common enemy and so, welcomed everyone who would help us rebuild.
Now, we don't care. We have 'our own, personal Jesus' which lacks any contact with a community or, we are atheists, participating in stone-throwing, or we have a "That's your problem!" attitude. We believe that we ought to "Shoot the messenger!" - that's a big one!... "Pull up the rope, Jack, I'm ok," is the default position.
Wastrels!
When he says about a shitload of ships, the picture accompanying it was a picture of the Royal Navy at anchor.
Actually, that was Task Force 58, not the Royal Navy.
lord bless these guys on this mission if it wasnt for bad luck these guys would have no luck at all
Fun Fact there is an ID vid done by a WWII Ron Reagan that tells why the Zero was called Zero and it had to do with the shape of the front end and all US planes with a round front like the Zero had a part sticking out breaking the "O" shape. If it was an unbroken O then you shoot.
To be fair on finding the stories I got intrigued in the WW1/2 stories in middle school thanks to some of the stuff laying in the school library. Snowballed into finding out a few funnies over time.
Im a retired, US Army 18B. But I was born in a Naval Hospital and grew up in Navy base housing. My dad was with the Seal teams out of Little Creek Virginia Beach VA. I have a good handle on both branches Army , Navy.
Yes I wanted to follow in my dad's foot steps , but he forbid me from joining the "New Navy" of the 70s so in 79 after graduation, I joined the Army. Now about to retire from civil service working for the Navy. Go figure..😂
Love your guys, channel .
Just a heads up Nick is also one of the four hosts on the Unsubscribe podcast it's also on CZcams you guys should check that out granted it's not something you can review because they're about a hour long episodes but if you guys like his content you will love the podcast
The Fat Electrician himself IS mayoring in story, his aim was if i recall correctly publish books telling said story as It should be done properly.
Nic (The Fat Electrician) is going to school now to get his degree in history.
He said on the UNSUBSCRIBE pod cast (EP130) that the history books are written by the commanding officer of the guy they're talking about or a historian who doesn't understand military humour, it's the account of events which sounded good to the guy's boss. He want's to amend it to how it really happened.
I think the Fat Electrician probably gets 5 hours sleep based on his hyper nature, and he is an aggressive researcher on his own.
Check out the podcast with him, and Donut Operator, along with a couple of others. It's hilarious and hyper when he is talking about subject matter to say the least.
One of Nick's best!
Keep an eye on the wet bits. Chances are you'll need 'em sometime.
Well, if you want to go from dry bit to dry bit...
I honestly would have never admitted to being in the Navy or active in WW2 had I been on that crew. I don't think there would be any way to talk about my service without being the butt of every joke. Silence would be golden.
I wish I could remember which video it was where Nick talks about the USS Wisconsin "the ship with a temper". When they erased a hill from the Korean coastline.
It's the Iowa class battleship video
Great reaction as usual!
I somehow missed this one when I went through Nic's videos. I laughed so effing hard at "The Iowa takes all three of her turrets, nine sixteen inch guns, and turns them and points them at the Willie D." that I had tears in my eyes. 😀 And then following that up with friendly ships radioing over to say "Don't shoot. We're Republican." That's military life right there. 49% "You're never gonna live this down." and 51% "Don't you effing drag me into your vortex of 'Oopsie?' you effing idiots!"
Luckiest crew for sure though.
COOL CHANNEL!!! I didn't join the Military but wanted to, I suffered a Traumatic Head Injury when I was 16, I'm 37 now, I ADMIRE THE US MILITARY! My PawPaw is 91 and he Served in The Army, and spent time in Germany in the 1950's, my Aunt was born there, he was also an Army Medic. I hope to see more Reactions from Y'all, "The Fat Electrician" IS COOL!
Good to see you here too Jacob!
They should make a movie of this story!
These stories make me love his others so much more. I was an AO in VFA-25 back in the early 2000s...it aint always pretty. Sometimes it really is...wtf just happened?
where he comes up with things is a different array of things, commenters, things he's just curious about, or when he has an idea for other things then finds out what really happened during research is what I've gatthered from what I've watched.
Add in the fact of his social circle, all Vets from every service.
@@TheRagratus yeah...just didn't think i needed to point that one out, but fair point.
How messed-up is it that the one thing I discovered that stood out more than anything else in this video is that _FDR jokes are all that it takes for Spencer to go from being a CZcams reactor to channeling Mark Hammill's version of The Joker?_ Because, starting at 31:51, that's exactly what happens....
Oh, and speaking of fuck-up people? I truly believe that has someone they know that is perpetually one of those guys. Heck, I've known two of them so far in my life - and one of them got 4 of my friends (as well as himself) permanently banned from Canada.
Has there EVER been a time anyone actively went and was like "oh shit i(or we) fucked up big. We need to immediately snitch" lmao
The shirt is awesome. I got one for me, but it now belongs to my nephew.
This is a great video. Hope you enjoyed this.
He does his homework 😂
I too have seen Denis Leary preform
Just gonna point out this is a real acc, I’ve had it for over 10 years but I love TFE & got some of his merch, great quality, love it & have been getting compliments ab it, not from TFE fans but just ppl who like the merch & sayings they have on them
I love history. But I love presidential history! I did learn all about their naughty habits as well. Now I was in the Army but afterwards I went into college where I increased my knowledge even more.
Sadly that Hawaiian shirt sold out crazy fast last fall. Missed out on getting it for my cruise to Hawaii in October. Hope he brings it out again
Regarding what you said about mitsubishi at 26:02 (manufacturer of the zero fighter), that statement (or joke) reinforces my hate towards the brand & the cars it made; or any Japanese card brand
Because my older brother has one given by our uncle, it's a '97 lancer; and let me tell you, *it's a freaking financial headache to maintain* . And ironically, he named the car after the fighter plane 'cuz it sounds cool and made by the same company
oh goodness ah what a great day this was
What about the American soldier who was rescued 3 times from ships that were sunk in ww2 in Pacific, unbelievable !
welp, if you have seen this, your are OBLIGATED to watch the Sam O' Nella Academy's earlier version of this xD
They should rename her the USS Monday.
The difference between a fairytale and a sea story. Fairytale starts, once upon a time. A sea story starts, this is a no shitter. All sailors know lots of sea stories.😁
Colledge..history major
Sent them on the orther side of the world😂
If you are interested Sam o Nella has a video on the William D Porter. And if you know Sam, it’s bloody hilarious. Maybe you could check it out some point
Nick is in school getting a degree in history. He wants to write history books for high schools.
Let's assume the worst and say the torpedo actually hit the Iowa. Would one torpedo really sink it?
@christopheryoder8292 No, not at all. It'd take half a dozen torpedoes placed at the perfect spots for impact to even begin to talk about sinking the Iowa. The Yamato, while being 40% heavier and this more armored than the Iowa class of battleships, only sunk after being hit with a minimum of 11 torpedoes and 7 bomb strikes... a single torpedo would've given Iowa a good scratching, but wouldn't even come close to compromising the ship's structure or ability to float.
@christopheryoder8292 and that's assuming the torpedo would've even detonated... earlier in the war, the American Mk. 14 torpedo was horribly unreliable. More often than not it'd go off-course or be a dud upon impact
How unlucky can you get? Uuuhh... Watch Drachinifel's "Voyage of the Damned" videos. Both parts detail the literal Voyage of the Damned that the Imperial Russian Navy's 2nd Pacific Fleet. Trust me, that was nearly a year of Mondays - day after day, Mondays all the way...
You guys gotta look at his video covering the postal trucks.
Whatch the military channel
Chubby electron guy learned history to debate the communists and socialists in college.
Why do you stop the video all the freaking time neither one of you say anything if consequence???????????
Really? That's your content?
