At my job we just had a LiDAR scan of a very large bridge to help confirm elevations match what was measured in the original plans from the 70s. Very cool tech and is insanely cheap compared to modeling a structure to the same level of detail.

Always seen these as used for safety clearance zones, around automated machines. Usually there's a couple of sensors, a yellow painted rectangle, or some other bright color, and whoever dares stepping in triggers the intrusion detection. Even having your foot floating above may be enough to trigger the alarm.

We use a lot of those Sick lights where I work. They are pretty sensitive. Fingerprints on the lense will mess it up. They are safety devices, and can be set up to detect in a specific area.

I just visited Tokyo Disney sea and one of their water rides, Aquatopia, uses robotic vehicles moving through a thin layer of water which I assumed they guided the vehicles through a wire or sensor embedded in the ground... but each vehicle has a tall pole with a lidar detector similar to this on top I'm guessing for redundancy but might have something to do with the water if anyone smarter than I could take any guesses

Honestly the switch in the living room that controls an outlet in the garage, the shed that has no breaker but has a gfci outlet substituting it, the outdoor porch lights that just had the ends of cables just jammed into an outlet, and the gas meter that had a box of .22 in it all in the same house is the best ive seen Also I saw a small diner once that had a total of 7 thermostats for some reason, not sure what that was all about but somebody lost their job for that

My parent’s house used to have carpeted stairs. When the guy removed the carpet he found about 2000 tacks holding it down and at the top of the stairs who ever did it used a ruler as tack board for the final step. And the whole upstairs was running off knob and tub wiring.

There are a lot of door sensors to automatically open and close doors that have started using a combination of passive infrared, and low power radar. Normally the first is sufficient, so you'll see a lot more of those in the wild, but they can be spoofed by blowing hot or cold air in their sensor range, which triggers the infrared detection. The ones with a radar sensor as well, are much harder to trigger, because the signal they are getting back isn't significantly affected by changes in air temperature. However if it's not installed properly, it very well may be detecting the presence on the wrong side of the door as well as the right side. They mostly use a panel antenna array, so are sensitive across less than 180 degrees in front of that panel, but if poorly aimed, might be detecting the feet of someone on the outside of the door. These are also showing up in the home automation arena as they act as presence sensors and can even detect your heart rate, or the movement of your body as you breath in and out. The modules that enable this are available through AliExpress and Amazon, and hook up to an Arduino or esp32. Some of the better ones will detect the number of people in their field of view, and ranges to them from the sensor, which is good as in some cases the sensor can see right through the walls of some modern construction where they are not using the amount of rock in a 1/2" sheet of sheetrock. And yeah, I think that's pretty cool too.
