    Just completed hand cleaning, aka "stick and rag method", a 7 MW unit. We determined due to the age of the insulation, cryo cleaning would not be an option. The units are 50 and 65 years old and nearing end of life of the insulation and will need to be rewound on the next cycle. We use plain mineral spirits on the metal components, and a product called PF cleaner on the windings. PF cleaner is non conductive and leaves no residue. Then recoat with type F insulating paint. We conduct megger, PI, and pole drop testing prior, during and after work.

    Had to clean a 600HP motor out when we replaced the bearings on it. Was used to shed tires to oblivion and inside it had a lot of rubber carbon char and some tire wires. After cleaning the windings got a fresh coat of that conformal coating material. The stuff smells like cancer in a can lol 😅

    "The rotor spins at 120 rpm". Ok going back to my nuclear power training (LCDR USNR (Ret)), NP=120f "Nuclear Power is 120 times the Fun", and assuming standard North American grid frequency of 60 hz, that means... a 60 pole generator?! WOW!

    • @Physicsduck
      @Physicsduck  Před 6 měsíci +3

      Yup, all of our hydro plants have very low RPM generators with lots of poles (because we have to get 60Hz no matter how slow we spin). Seeing turbine RPMs way down at only a couple hundred is pretty common.

    • @maigretus1
      @maigretus1 Před 6 měsíci +2

      @@Physicsduck I was going to say how surprised I was that it only spun about twice a second, but then I remembered that my ships' propellers usually spun at ~75 rpm at standard cruising speeds, so maybe that isn't as slow as I thought. BTW, with 60 poles, that's one every 6°. Let's see...assuming a 6 foot diameter ( judging by comparing Chris's size to that of the radius of the stator.) times π and divided by 60, that's a pole every 3.76 inches.

    • @maigretus1
      @maigretus1 Před 6 měsíci +2

    • @Physicsduck
      @Physicsduck  Před 6 měsíci +1

      They're bigger than they look, and I'm smaller. The generator in this video is about 10 feet in diameter on the outside I'd guess. I'll get you some detailed specs in a future video and you can work out the number of poles. :)

    • @Physicsduck
      @Physicsduck  Před 6 měsíci +1

    I'm super late to this party but, if i may offer my two cents. That coating will be unaffected by the simple green because that coating is Glyptal alkalyd resin, which is incredibly stable and chemical resistant, which is part of why it is in such good shape after all those years of being abused inside that generator.

    Actually you can power wash it as long as you dry it out completely afterwards so this guy says you can’t but you actually can. A hot water power wash would have gotten all that crud off it and it would have gotten all the crud inside them windings not just the outside were he is wiping off Wich is basically nothing it’s better than nothing. Could have use a media blaster too to thoroughly clean it if something is making you money then it’s worth it I’d say.

    • @Physicsduck

    While exuberance at having finished that tedious and precise job is understandable, my question is about the liquid detergent. Before you started, you opined that water is bad on a job like that, but it seemed to me that water would be better than any carbon-based cleaner, as it would not attack the varnish. It would also be better than scrubbing for the same reason (assuming low pressure application) but you have now used both water and abrasion. The product you used has water in it, and the tool you used applied abrasion.
    Those are both fine, but are you going to check the windings with low voltage to test for short circuits between wires? Might it be a good idea to re-varnish? (You are still a hero.)

    • @Physicsduck
      @Physicsduck  Před 2 lety +6

      Water in massive amounts is bad. The only water we used was the liquid inside the straight Mr.Clean. Nothing additional. We wet the rags and wiped it down. This level of moisture doesn't pose any significant danger to the operation. There's more moisture condensing out of the air in the room from the space heaters.
      All windings are megged out and tested before reassembly as well.

      I'll bet the "varnish" was Glyptal. Good oil resistance, to the extent race car engine builders use it to coat the pushrod valley to help in oil shedding and return to the crankcase.

    Noticed that some of these big old grid generstors seem to look kind of thin/ narrow in the actual generation (stator) area; as supposed (compared) to a smaller portable generator, or the little alternator in ones vehicle.?🤔 what determines the physical size (width/ height or whatever of the generator design? Voltage, amps, cycles/ phases?

    • @v8snail
      @v8snail Před 2 lety

      Surface speed and total capacity. A slow rotating speed needs a larger diameter to bring the ideal surface speed up at the poles. The width is then dictated by the total power available.
