    Basically it works the same way that the brakes on your car work. Hydraulic pressure forces a piston out, pushing a brake pad against the surface causing friction and heat slowing it down, as bad as it sounds, i would absolutely love to see, on camera from far away, a massive generator over speed until catastrophic failure, it would be absolutely spectacular! And don't lie Chris, you know you would love to see it happen, just not yours 😂

      Damn straight! That would be one hell of a show. If I ever get to decommission an old plant that's the kind of thing I would try to do. Of course there would be 20 cameras rolling and a lot of fun sensors for Vibration, Velocity, Temperature, and Decibells.

    The brakes will never stop the unit from spinning if the wicket gates don't close, they will simply smoke! The brakes are only used to stop a unit from spinning under normal shutdown. In fact if the unit does not stop quickly, the brakes must be released. And the mercury speed switch on the top of the unit is useless on a grid tied unit.

    It is interesting to see the safety brakes need an oil pressure to stop the rotor. I would expect the opposite: the oil pressure to be needed to actually release the brakes (e.g. lifting the rotor by the thrust bearing from the fixed brake pads up into the free operating position, or so...), so it can not move out of control even when e.g. some seal or line bursts open...

      I reckon you could employ a system similar in nature to air brakes. Pressure is applied to keep the brakes down, the bottom of the piston could be spring loaded so that on a pressure loss, the brakes apply. But then you have to have all sorts of interlocks to ensure grid disconnection, wicket closure, a whole mess of other shit i know nothing about. I guess you could have stop logs ready to drop but that feels excessive and then spill ways which means you get Grady from Practical Engineering involved. Really quite excessive. But there ain't no kill like over kill...

    I know for a fact that the power station close to where I grew up that was in operation until the 50's used a log to brake the rotor. It had 150 meters aka 213 psi feed pressure, and 2 meters diameter of hand riveted iron pipe about 2 kilometres long. It had two generators, and was constructed in 1910. The building has the black and white checker board pattern floor,- and has been restored.
    It lacks the generators and hardware,- and there is only remains of the pipeline that did lead up to the dam.

    They won't stop a runaway generator. We have the same type set up on our Allis Chalmers. The brakes operate on air and can be used to jack during maintenance with a hydraulic hand pump. The brakes are to bring a unit to a complete stop in a reasonable time so the unit doesn't creep / coast which is bad for the bearings.

  • @MarcIzq2
    @MarcIzq2 Před 4 měsíci

    Really interesting video! This might be a super dumb question, but can't you just short the generator? I would assume that would massively increase the load and bring it almost to a complete stop in almost no time
