Automatic couplers and automatic air brakes - two designs essentially unchanged from the 1800s still in safe and efficient service today. True, the couplers have better steel, and "tight lock" capability on some models, but it is still Janney's design. And the air brakes have faster acting triple valves and they are at long last looking at electricity as a brake activator, but it is still Mr. Westinghouse's design safely slowing and stopping thousands of trains thousands of times a day.

Ideal coupler for towing a bootleg still through the bush . Fast hookup & go.

those were odd looking E type couplers.
both pins don't need to be pulled in order to uncouple.

Good thing Eli Janney invented those

Советские СА-3 лучше, они полностью автоматические, у них перед сцепкой не надо зубцы раскрывать, в отличии от этих сцепок.
Soviet SA-3s are better, they are fully automatic, they do not need to open the teeth before coupling, unlike these couplings.

Couplers can’t go side to side to connect! Lousy design!

Well they clearly work since these are the standard couplers used on all freight trains in North America

Omg this dude does not know our janney couplers, THEY LITERALLY CAN GO FROM SIDE TO SIDE THAT WAS JUST A WEIRD DESIGN.

@@hrk9209 Not really a weird design considering the friction of unfinished surfaces is easily overcome by the weight of the rail cars whereas these where just two couplers sitting on a table.

    • @edfrawley4356

installed they can go several inches side to side but there is really no need to go farther when both rail cars are confined to the same rail. Excellent design for over 100 years with little change.
