Those little holes are most likely to balance those rings.
You're exactly right. Trust me, I'm an expert.
@@expert8997 I don't think it spins that fast but maybe...
"These five packages have been marked for removal." I smell Linux! :)
You do indeed! There's a lot more Ubuntu, Kali, and Gentoo machines around here than there are Windows. :)
If your 100+ year old project doesn't have at least 2 kinda screws is it even really a project?
Those old rings would be a really cool souvenir for your shop or somewhere like that
They could form the logo of the Hydro Olympics.
A disc of acrylic or fibreboard on top and it would make a nifty side table :)
19:19 "Stuff it, Yank it, Pull it, Get it"
Must be a lyric from a song by Daft Shmoo.
If someone samples that with a beat, please send me a copy, lol.
11:00 he's telling us this like we're doing it tomorrow lolololo
I wonder if the series of small holes that you found was weight removal for balancing. In which case I wonder if the complete set of rings was balanced, or just individual rings. Really interesting stuff.
It starts with shmoo in the hole and then shrinkage occurs.
Maybe the small holes in the inside of the slip ring were drilled by a overly prudent engineer during a dynamic balancing of the ring assembly?
Hell yeah! Chris Boden is a helicopter guy?? And compares something to a collective from a heli?? Chris I enjoy your content more and more every day. Helicopters are so much better than airplanes.
I started on Helicopters, but I also fly fixed wing and multirotors as well. :)
@@Physicsduck aw man that’s awesome. I’ve done a few discovery flights in both helicopters and airplanes. My current goal is to go into the army National guard flying helicopters as a Warrant Officer. But I might fly fixed wing in the civilian sector just because it’s so much cheaper, and my end goal is to fly for an airline. Hopefully by then I’ll have the income to fly helicopters for leisure.
Get this guy a lathe!
Could the "pitted" part be from a bad sync or a lightning strike? It looked melted rather than pitted.
I wonder if that crack on the third hole affected anything PSA breathing in phenolic is worse than asbestos exposure
Phenolic? Really. Oh crap! (goes off to research)
Dawn is some pretty good stuff. Try bartenders friend and you can polish them. 👍🤔
I am guessing Crazy Joe is the Bossman
Are the rings interchangeable, like will the five rings be able to be spare?
Excellent job and video. Unless my eyes are deceiving me you get to loosen all the screws now and install the other 5 rings. Yes, No?
Too bad Abom79 isn't around you; he could just toss those on a lathe to clean them up
2 minutes and he's done
The drilled holes might be to balance the rings
where do you use the redundant rings?
Those go into my inventory and will be used in a future project. This is the closest thing to a "benefits package" I get.
8 months late to the party but I've got a milling machine. Looks like a pretty simple part too. But I'm guessing it's far too late to help
Is geek group still around in GR?
Nope, the Group died at the end of 2018.
Lord of the rings!
Nikola would be proud
Not too happy that the electrical connection is through the screws, to be honest.
You have 8 rings all together, why not just pick 3 of the best non pitted ones? In any case, you now have 5 spare rings.
It would be good to have close up shots as you are working so that we can see what you are doing.
Yes, it would. I'd like to have a closeup camera off to the side, but that would require two things. 1. Another camera. 2. A place to put it. But I consider it a lesson for when I build the next shop. For now, I use the overhead camera for closeups.
be safe
Ooo! First!
