    Bravery does not equal the absence of fear, but the control of it. Having faced a few fearsome occasions and given thanks for avoiding death or dismemberment one more time, I can say that all the guys in this project are heroes. The comedic comments with subtle double entendre add a human dimension to the presentation which is quite enjoyable as well as making the point that those are human beings working on a super-human machine which could crush the life out of them with no effort. Having dog energy on site helps. Just make sure the dog does not get into anything poisonous.

    This illustrates a part of why my minor was hydroelectric power. You get to work with some great colorful people in interesting environments. It’s a dream job for machine junkies who like to play with electricity. It saddens me to see all the plants being decommissioned. One plant I was associated with went online in 1909 and ran non stop till 1983 when a dam break destroyed it. Another plant went online in 1917 and was was destroyed by a 100 year rain storm in 1976. These plants ran virtually non stop their entire lives barring some maintenance. Small, environmentally friendly, non obstructive to the riparian zone and wildlife. And no fossil fuel consumption. These are the plants we need to bring back. Our turbines were mainly high head low flow horizontal Francis turbines and large multi nozzle pelton wheels.

      There is nothing „green“ about shutting down hydropower.
      It can be done with very little impact to fish etc. by building ponds and using them to raise water when „clean“ photovoltaics is meddling with the beautiful sine wave induced by generators.
      Thank you for speaking up!

    I grew up near the Bull Run watershed in Oregon and the hydro plant there still has the old machines run by huge belts off of a main shaft. Fascinating stuff. Of course the liberal wasteland of our state politics shut it down. There was also a massive wooden flume to transport water with little railroad tracks on top. I rode it once as a kid but would love to do it again now that I’m not quite so young and dumb.

    • @Physicsduck
      @Physicsduck  Před 2 lety +26

      That depends I guess. Down the hole is a straight shot out the back of the plant. The pipe turns a 90 degree corner and then shoots out the bottom-rear of the building. The distance is about thirty feet or so to open water.
      Right now though, there isn't much flow to shoot you out, the water is just barely above freezing (there's a thick layer of ice on the canal), and it might just shoot you out under the ice.
      So...could you survive? Maybe, but I wouldn't want to try it myself.
