Hi, I’m Matt, fishery manager, engineer and passionate carp angler. This channel is about helping you catch carp with in-depth tutorials.
I’ve been carp fishing since I was a boy. In 2011, I bought my own lake in France, Beausoleil Carp and Cats. It’s a 4 acre estate lake and half of the stock has been fished for for 20 years, so our carp are very good at spitting rigs! Over the years, the lake has helped me improve my skills and create some of my own tricks to fool a wily carp.
Between my own fishing, my experience as a fishery manager and meeting hundreds of anglers, I have continued to learn about our craft and about all those details that can transform a session.
As well as the free videos on this channel, I offer one-on-one tuition by video call. I also run tutorial sessions for guests visiting the lake where I share all my tips that not only work wonders at Beausoleil but will make you an even better angler wherever you fish.

100% Bombproof Carp Rig (ANYTIME / ANYWHERE)
This rig gives you a guaranteed presentation and keeps you fishing in all conditions.
The rig is a variation on the mono D with a blowback tube to create a long D. This makes the bottom bait sit lower down, near the bend of the hook and helps the rig to flip and turn faster and give great hook holds.
This rig is impossible to tangle and will keep you fishing in all sorts of conditions.
And if I had to choose one rig to fish with for the rest of my life, no matter what type of venue, lake, river, weed, silt, this is the one.
Many anglers are obsessed with combi rigs, spinner rigs, and rigs that have extra flexibility and movement near the hook. But if a rig can easily spin in, it can spin out just as quickly. And whenever you introduce a swivel or a supple section into a rig, there’s a chance that it will tangle - either in flight or while it’s fishing. You don’t need to add movement near the hook to catch more carp. You don’t need a thinner material near the hook to catch more carp.

The knotless knot hair rig may be the simplest rig to tie but it doesn’t mean you can’t get it wrong. The problem with the knotless knot is that there are lots of permutations possible. In fact, when I first learnt to tie the hair rig, I made lots of mistakes. So in this video, I go through all the mistakes I’ve done and seen over the years so that you can make the most of this absolutely fanta...

Nice Matt. Always the scopex
Thank you Matthew for helping with my struggles with rigs due to my rheumatoid arthritis you are a true gent sir ❤
My pleasure mate and all the best with your fishing 🎣
Lovely fish ❤
👍
I use similar knots to tie stiff links it never slips good knot for stiff and/or thick mono
😂😂 only use 4s and 2s
What’s a pecherie?
It’s a large concrete pit with a grill at the end. The lake water exits through what’s called a monk (concrete pit with 60mm chestnut boards, 30cm tall, dropped into steel channels) and then flows into the pecherie.
I'm in total agreement with you regarding barbless hooks. I've fished for over 30+ year with barbless hooks and never had and issue with losses. I tried mirco barb and found mouths being damaged more, plus if you have a snap off hooks can be shed easily.
I just can't make sense of that slip knot. I might need to resesrch that separately
So a barb weakens the hookpoint yet the hooks must be sharpened - meaning filing off (thinning) hook point material... Right.
Whats the rig please Matt
Here I was showing my blow back. multi rig, very popular with guests who don't want to tie their own rigs, you can re-use the rig and change the hook when you need to: czcams.com/video/7VlmNHg0BD0/video.html
@@matthewcollinsangler thanks I'll have a look
I love all your videos and am ditching the lead clip and starting to use running rigs could you not just use the running rig in this situation
Yes absolutely. TBH I don’t use this rig anymore, I much prefer to use a basic running ledger now whenever possible. Although silt depth can be a factor, what’s more important is how you are getting your rigs into position. If you are using a bait boat, baiting spoon, rowing them out or dropping them into a near side margin then you do not need to use a helicopter rig or a popup. If I’m casting then it would depend on how far. If you don’t need to cast very far, use a lighter lead, 2.5 oz down to 1.5oz if you can get away with it. Use a PVA mesh stick to slow the rig’s descent through the water. If I can cast out, stop the rig before it hits the water, feel the lead down and feel some kind of thud, then I know I’m fishing. Obviously you need to be able to feel the donk. I only use a helicopter rig If I have to cast a long way with a big lead and I know the lead is plugging deep into the silt.
Thankyou for the explanation I use a baitboat where possible and a bushwhacking if not so I’ll stick with the running rig thankyou gav
Morning Matt, have you got a video of how to set up where you use the helicopter sleeve and run ring?
Not yet! We've just started filming it. I've done a quick overview on it on this post on instagram: instagram.com/p/CsoJFuBMfH7/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Looks pretty straight forward. What size Nash Scope Tray do you use small or large?
When I'm out fishing I use the small one, when I'm rig prepping at home, I use the big one (you don't need the magnetic bit).
What was that you rubbed on the hand sharpened hook at the end please?
I put some hook grease on the hook point to avoid rust
That's what it's all about
instead of a pop-up maybe a lil' fillet of mussel on the hair? There are so many in my area. One can grab one off the shore where you are fishing. you have inspired me, going to definitely try this out.
Hi Matt, do this rig work whit chod claw hooks or only twister ? Thanks for all your vids, they are the best 🙏
Do you ever use the nash chod claw hooks to this rigg?
Yes mate I do. The size 6 Nash claws have a larger eye than the size 6 Twisters so if I need to use 0.60 mono hooklink then I would use the claws. If you are looking to use thinner mono then I would not use the claws as the eye is too large. There’s absolutely no difference between the performance of either of these two hooks. Beaked point or straight, all that matters is how sharp they are and they are both very very sharp hooks 👍
Thanks 🙏
Wang them out there into a 6ft weed bed and that rig you got in you're hand ain't much good
I didn’t cover my whole approach there, I do recce the water with a leading rod before fishing a new water.
This man is seriously good at what he does. No mincing about , straight to the business end. 👍🏼👍🏼
Much appreciated 🙏
Brilliant Matthew Been using a d rig since restarted carping & have been plagued by d pulling out so will try upping line diameter I do find short d suited to smaller 10 or 12 mm baits
Why don't you like rod pods in the UK, especially with three rods?
It very much depends on the venue you fish TBH. This year I’ve decided to use a pod more in my fishing to see how I go. The most important thing with a pod is to secure it properly. That’s something that is often overlooked. We’ve done full video on pods vs banks ticks here: czcams.com/video/ECd6MJhUW58/video.htmlsi=frvvaTnnAo-Rsn4h
If not using a PVA bag would this rig work tied out of mono rather than braid??
No it wouldn't. With mono, I use this rig primarily: czcams.com/video/Rr4paU5B_r4/video.html
Hi I wont to setup your running rig with the nash components which I have most of it i also have the fox angled running rig set i was just wondering which would work better with tubing as one of the lakes I fish is tubing only many thanks again
Some braids will slip on the spool, so that's the only reason I use mono backing. I noticed you didn't make any knots on the spool, nor between your backing and the main line. Why?
Because I was loading 300m of 0.30 mainline over the top and I never fish more than 120m distance, there’s absolutely no way that the backing line is going to come into play so there’s no need to tie a knot so I taped it. If I’m fishing at a long distance and there’s a risk of running out of line then absolutely I’d tie a knot.
That’s why I method feed and recast every 15min ;)
You can adjust the tension just fine on a baitrunner as well. Been doing it for 12 years.
Banging bank sticks into a hardcore bank makes too much noise for my liking
I do!👍
I used it all the week end and works perfectly. I only prefer the whipping knot version cause it avoids the blob to interferre with the exit direction of the hooklink from the eye of the hook. Really perfect hookholds with nash chod 6 and 22mm baits
That's wonderful to hear, congrats!
Really amazing video Think best online that I have seen Well done Matt, as always top class videos
Really appreciate that mate, thanks.
I use a plastic cereal storage container as the spool cannot tip over 👍🏼
Hi were do you get your run rings from thanks
These are the Fox plastic run rings
@@matthewcollinsangler thanks for the reply with the components your using are you able to use rig tubing thanks for the great videos ive tied up about 20 of those rigs for when I'm out next thanks
@@michaelhedges41070 I use the Nash Heli sleeve as the buffer bead specifically because it works with a wide range of materials: rig tubing, lead free leader or a mono leader or naked. The Fox run rig also works with all of the those options 👍
Your actively encouraging all the noddys to use sea fishing line and pull the head off every fish they catch, which is already a huge problem on commercials....
Your talking absolute nonsense m8 if he was using 40lb mainline I'd get your point. It's no different too using 25lb boom material on a Ronnie rig or stiff hinge.
Cray fish I bet
I always wonder if my rigs are ok after an hour. And get the itch to reel in and recast ha
Great stuff, I have learnt so much from you, my catch rate has increased by a lot. Thank you Mathew
Wonderful to hear, thank you 😊
Great video very informative Do you use this rig for your margin fishing? Kind regards Richard
Hi Richard, yes you can use it wherever you want to including in the margins.
Do you shorten your snood length or change lead to an inline? Sorry so many questions just getting into carp fishing
@@richarddickinson7242 No I don’t change the hooklink length, I fish this rig 6’’ everywhere I go. If dropping from a bait boat, I use an inline running lead, if casting or placing rods with a rowing boat, I use a swivel running lead. Check out my other videos, plenty of straight forward advice and tutorials as you get into the sport 😊
Does sea salt harden baits out the bag then
@@LeeSurman-zz5ym Yes, it does, I go into it in detail in this video: czcams.com/video/7Ji4xATrvQk/video.html
Hey Matthew, How's about giving us a masterclass on the sunken float method or surface fishing. You must be sick to the back teeth of waiting for a carp to hang itself against that 3oz lead. Do a series on actually catching carp instead of trapping them. I mean come on... the carp picks up the bait, feels the resistance, bolts off, hooks itself, and you reel it in on a 3lb TC rod and 20lb line. Not much fun is it? Even if you're 100 yards away on the vinegar stroke with the Bailiffs missus it doesn’t matter, the self hooking rig has done it's job, and the slackened off spool with tick away until you've finished your dirty deed for the day. So there's no need to dash back with your kex around your ankles when the old Delkim calls. How's about catching a couple of 30's on float tackle on a short morning session before work? Think of the satisfaction you'll get from actually striking the hook home instead of the carp just hanging itself against a heavy lead. You shouldn't need 12 / 24hrs to catch a carp even on difficult low stock waters. Top specimen anglers catch 20lb barbel on huge rivers on short morning sessions with only one rod. Come on Matthew... let's see how good you are at actually catching carp. One rod, 5hr session, two 30's..
Even in rivers?
Lots more factors to consider on the river… flow rate, nuisance species. I do a lot of short evening sessions on the river of 5-6 hours and I’d only re-do a rod if I think I’ve had an occurrence that’s potentially ruined the presentation.
Not if them little catfish will have your boilies gone
Caught plenty of cats with the boilie still on the bait screw.
Pure confidence ❤
