  • Here’s a homemade syrup you can use for PVA sticks, spod mix or over boilies.
    I’ve had a bit of fun in the kitchen and created my own citrus syrup with simple ingredients like oranges and condensed milk. For added attractiveness, I’ve added some honey and alcohol. It’s really easy to make, versatile and perfect for those tough early season conditions.

    There’s loads of different spod syrups and mixes available these days but what could be more fun than designing and making your own and catching carp on it right? The principles of this basic recipe can be tweaked and adjusted to create a variety of different syrups. If you have a secret ingredient you’re happy to share, let me know in the comments!
    If you’d like to see what I’ve been catching using this recipe, just follow me on the usual social media channels 🙂

    Matt, I really appreciate your inspiration to try something new! Materials that you have at home anyway or that are easy to get, plus the great feeling of having made everything yourself, that's fantastic! After watching this video with some delay, I immediately started making my own syrup last night. As I didn't have any oranges, I used a lemon, I also mixed in Aperol. Smells great and I will try it out at the end of next week. The water is still terribly cold, so the carp are showing very little activity. I just bought two oranges and got myself some Cointreau.... Sweetened condensed milk is now the only ingredient I don't have, but that's no big deal.
    Thanks again for this great inspiration, Matt!

      Thanks very much for the feedback, it’s much appreciated 😊
      I tend to grind the himalayan salt and then add it to the stick mix itself rather than try and add it to the syrup, although there’s no reason you can’t dissolve some salt with the sugar when you make the syrup. No need to go overboard, about a teaspoon will give it a good salty kick 👍 Have fun with it!

      Hi Paul, yes, good idea to use the Nash baller, I just wouldn't recommend freezing the balls because it can impact the buoyancy, ie they won't sink. If you add enough syrup, you'll get a really sticky mix that, if left to dry overnight, will go quite hard and they'll fly out miles. Yeah, you can boost it with essential oils, no need to go mad as it's got plenty of punch as is. See how you go 😊

      Ah not sure what you mean mate, I just use some Himalayan salt (pink rock salt) and sprinkle it into my bait mix which could consist of anything really. I use the Nash stuff but you can use regular salt. Salt is an essential part of the carp’s diet so it’s a powerful attractor.

      Sorry Matt.bloody auto correct..it should have said could you possibly make a hymalayan rock salt flavour syrup???

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  Před měsícem

      @@bmarkham47 Hi mate, a syrup by definition is sugar based so if it’s a syrup you want you have to use sugar in some form. Mix salt with water and you make a brine, not a syrup. However, there’s no reason why you can’t make a syrup with plenty of himalayan salt in it and that’s the road I’d take. Best of luck, Matt.

      Thanks Matt. We know syrup is sweet.but if im adding hymalayan salt im going to loose the sweetness. Is there maybe another way to combine both. I can only think of a syrup mix then when I go fishing to add the rock salt at the last moment for max taste of sweet combined with the salt ...idk.

      Hi Bert,
      For the simple syrup, I just use water, sugar and orange zest.
      For additional flavour I added: orange flowered honey, condensed milk and Cointreau (orange-based spirit). You could swap or change ingredients of course.

      Hi Richard, February was tough and I blanked for 3 ½ weeks! Nothing to do with the syrup though (there’s a full video out tomorrow about my winter session and my blank.) In the end I had 11 carp, fishing with the syrup. It works well mate. You’ve still got to get everything else right of course but I’ll definitely be using it again when time allows me to fiddle around like this. Cheers, Matt.
