Solid PVA bags are a great technique to use to make sure that your rig is perfectly presented every time. The method is cost effective because you don’t need much bait to be successful. They can be used all year round but I tend to use them most in the winter.

To save licking & sticking the bottom corners of the bag, I just turn the bag inside out at the start.
What I also do is cut a v shape off the top of the bag. Doing this gives two tag ends to tie off the bag with two granny knots without tape or string.

Great video..ive always used pva bags but I use lead clips. For some reason i am not confident with inline. I do catch on my lead clip rigs. I was always told to put a bit of crumb at the bottom, then hook. I then top the bag up with micro pellets and prawn liquid.

Hi Matthew, just been going back over some of your videos as it's too bloody cold to get out fishing at the moment (my old bones don't like the cold so much nowadays). One thing I do all the the time when using PVA bags is before I tie the loop on my main line I make a loop about an inch long (I use 14lb braid) and pass the main line through this then tie the knot (so you got a small loop inside your main loop, this can then be passed through your leader followed by your main loop and all you do is pull the braid loop when you change rigs, it makes it so much easier to 'unloop' your main line from the leader, I also use it on my hooklenths ,the little loop can be inserted in the lead if you don't want it dangling. Hope this makes sense, definitely worth trying

The lead needs to be at the side. Rob Burgess style. It may fly better being in the middle but it will have less pellet/crumb covering it when it lands. You want everything disguised. When you put the bag flush to one side and the hookbait on the opposite side: you maximise the coverage of the pellet/crumb

The most simplest thing people always forget about pva bags is that it will always break from the weakest point so if that point is by your lead it can quite literally flip you bag leaving your hookbait under your lead, always put a hole by your hookbait so the bag opens up and around your lead properly 👍🏼
Hi mate, great point. What I do is I use the hook point to make a hole in the bag right next to the bait so this will be the weakest point. The bags I use are pre-perforated so I never worry about them flipping or the hookbait being covered as they melt nice and evenly. Cheers, Matt.

For my canal fishing i use a Ronnie rig in a bag tied to soft hook length material or Nash trigger link
With a 2.5/3oz in line and drop it in the edge,bear in mind my pva bag is massive(big as my hand) carry’s a lot of food and liquids and I also cover bag in liquid just to get attraction down on the bottom.
Just drop it in the edge further down canal and chuck a load of bait on top I’ve had fish to 32lb out of my local canal

Hi Matt good video I've just been away for a week with the family,there was a lake at the bottom of the garden so would be rude not to bring some tackle lol 🤣.The weed was mega thick even too thick for a chod .So I was using PVA bags with the lead drop off style and punching through the weed.Had some nice carp out.

Have done ok on running rigs but I seem to lack confidence in them when our lake is covered in silk weed that’s sank to bottom due to presentation

Hi mate, yes absolutely. Low lying silkweed shouldn't cause any issue at all. I would always try to use as light a lead as possible in this situation to avoid the lead falling too deeply into the green stuff. A little PVA mesh bag will also help slow the descent through the water onto the weed and help with presentation. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Kev, it’s just a regular kettle and it’s the heat from the steam that shrinks the tube. You can’t use any tubing though, it’s special heat shrink tubing like this one: amzn.to/3e42Y6v

Nice vid one quick question do you think pop are better than bottom baits in bags I? I’ve hooked many a carp in the cheek on pop ups but nailed them proper on bottom baits
Hi Paul, your question surprises me TBH. I may be wrong but is it possible that you are not using a large enough weight to counterbalance the popup and are effectively fishing with a short zig 🤔? I know some guys have commented that wafters work better than popups but I really don’t get hung up on that kind of thing. You only catch with what you fish with 😊
I’m super confident with bottom baits for sure and they’d be a good choice. I’m not saying that you must use a popup to be successful, I just used one as an example. The lead system is actually the most important aspect of this design as it prevents the carp using the weight of the lead against you. Hope that helps mate. Cheers, Matt.

Hi mate, not done a video on this topic yet. There are various factors to consider. Lake rules, for example, if a water is rig tubing only then I wouldn't bother trying to use solid PVA bags, I’d use a lead-free leader material such as Cling-on. If you are targeting a weedy lake then I’d definitely use a solid PVA bag as there’s a much higher chance that it will present well in this situation. If your casting isn't very good then solid bags are great because no matter how bad the cast is the rig will present well (if you’ve tied the bag well). If it’s raining then use PVA mesh. For speed and convenience, use PVA mesh. Hope that gives you some food for thought. Cheers, Matt.

One thing you could do Alan is put whole boilies in the PVA bag, a nice bag of 12 or 15mm would make a lovely trap and the silvers would leave you alone. Food for thought 😊

Just my opinion but I have found wafters to be streets ahead of a pop up in a bag, pop up just ends up sitting above rather than in the bait, and 8/10 times the carp want the pile of pellet first
Agree with this 100%. My catch rate is much better since changing to wafters. Watch the korda solid bag masterclass. You will change the way you tie solids too.
I sort of agree, wafters work really well, however an 8mm pop up with a bb shot has worked wonders for me, especially in the early spring
@@benjo8882 nice at light and if perfectly balanced they suck it up with contents of pva bag sometimes suck it up unintentionally because it's that's light.
Try the shot on the hook rig for a pop up, perfect medium tween waftin n poppin. Instead of being inches above it’s just floating slightly more than a wafter would so they have no choice but to suck it in with the pellet
Wafters work MUCH better as a popup. They lay in between te feed. Where a popup stand above.

I wondered if anyone else used oats, one of my best ever sessions was oats, liquidised sweetcorn and a tin of custard to make a proper slop over zigs. Was awesome and dirt cheap

Hi Matt hope you’ve got plenty of water in these dry times , what are water levels like on the Mayenne at the moment. With regard to the bags what would say is the benefit over a large method feeder which I have used with a lot of success on public waters in France?

Hi mate, it’s a few weeks since I’ve been to the river so I’m not sure on the level really. We’ve having some rain today though🤞I’m surprised to hear the method feeder is working so well for you because bream love them! Solid bags with salted tiger nuts are a good bet on public waters as they’re less attractive to nuisance fish and you can’t use tigers on a method feeder. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt

Hi Matt, just come across your channel. I’ve just got back into carp fishing, previously I always used rig tubing as opposed to any sort of leadcore leader. I wanted to try this exact setup but am a bit confused as to the safety of the rig after reading some horror stories regarding fish and leaders.
Hi mate, the first thing that I would say is that if you are unsure about using leaders because you don’t understand how to safely use them in your angling then my advice would be to stick to rig tubing. Leaders are safe, if they are used correctly and in the right situation. The trouble is, it’s really easy to create a dangerous setup. If you follow this PVA rig video to the letter, then it’s completely safe to use.
I would only use solid PVA bags in certain situations. I wouldn't use it in heavy weed as even if you hook one, you’ll never land it and if your mainline fails and the inline jams in the weed before the mainline clear the hole, then the carp will be left towing a load of crap which is never good. If there is heavy weed, then you need to set the lead to eject on the take. I don’t have a video on that yet.
As an alternative, you could look at this rig: czcams.com/video/LzFina92brM/video.html. This is a very effective, safe and simple rig that uses rig tubing.
It’s difficult to give you clear guidelines as there are so many parameters to consider but I hope this gives you food for thought.

Basically all you need to do is to remove the plastic insert from an inline lead. Replace it with a Nash inline lead insert and then thread the assebly onto a 40lb leader (I used Nash Cling-on in this video). Lightly push the swivel into the inline lead insert. Make sure that the lead slides off the insert freely and easily so that the carp can’t do the rig. Hope that makes sense. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Lee, with solid pva bags, we use braid because it’s supple and it’s easier to coil inside the bag. Braid tends to be rated stronger than the mainline and it’s normal to use 25lb braid with 15lb mainline. If fishery rules say that the hooklink cannot be stronger than the mainline, then Armourlink is available in 15lb and you can use it no problem with 15lb mainline. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt
i was looking at using this kind of rig at my local, but they do not allow braid of any kind even on hooklink, any recccomandations to replace the armourlink?
Hi mate,
First, to replace the armourlink, use a mono hooklink, like a piece of your mainline.
Then what I’d do is hook a PVA mesh stick on the hook. That’s all I use most of the time.
The other option is that you use a mono hooklink and make a parachute bag, ie don’t put the lead inside the bag. Good option for weed.

Awesome vid mate, I love using pva bags but find them such a pain to make up on the bank. Especially as I get the odd cast not v accurate. Found the pre made stems from avid means can make up a few in advance. Even so, I tend to just use wide mesh, fill it with goodies and hook on my rig. I imagine it's a similar effect

My latest method with this is to bore a hole through centre that allows me to thread putty and sleeve through easily. Looks great and so easy. Would you have concerns if using a stiff coated braid, I’m slightly concerned the weight of all this impacting water is going to kink the hook link or sit looped up

Do PVA bags work on rivers? How long does it take for them to break?

Hi mate, I prefer to use 5cm long PVA sticks made with narrow (23mm) PVA mesh. They cast well, break down quickly and fall through the water relatively quickly. I would not use solid PVA bags on the river as they fall through the water too slowly for my needs. Many spots I fish are 4m deep and if the rig falls slowly my rig would be out of position by the time it hits the bottom. Breakdown time is entirely dependent on the type of PVA you use and the water temperature. I use the Nash fast melt all year round and never have any issues with residue. They do a slow melt version for deep water use during the summer but it’s not necessary for my fishing. Hope that helps, Cheers, Matt.

Thats good mate. the only thing that I don't do is that big loop, and when the whole thing is wet I just chuck it all in bag of maize flower. Good little tutorial tho!.

Hey Matt is 2oz lead will do the job for my 3.0lb rod ? Solid bag rig and solid bag setup
Hi mate, lots of factors at play with solid bags. Size of the bag, the density of the bag mix, casting range etc. My lightweight Scopes are 9ft - 3lbs and they can cast a solid bag of 4oz (total weight) but I wouldn't want to cast them very far. For that you really need a 3.5lb TC rod. With my 3lb scopes I normally prefer to use a small PVA stick mix and a 3oz lead. I can cast these to the horizon if I need without the risk of breaking a rod. It very much depends on the exact nature of the fishing situation and what you are trying to achieve. @@matthewcollinsangler oh ok, I normally use mix of 1-3mm pellets and some stick mix inside or crushed boilies . I don’t tend to cast 100yards, most of my fishing is 40-60 yards. I’m more concerned if the 2oz weight is enough for hooking the carp.

@@matthewcollinsangler they a great way of making bags and go well with tubing
I dont put the weight in the bag or use tape. Just put the rig in the bag and leave the end you connect to your mainline, fill the bag but leave a gap at the top, snip down the centre line of the bag and twist, lick and stick the tags to either side if the bag. Never had a bag come off, even when whacking it out as far as I can. If you tie a loop in the rig and attach to a hook swivel and cover the swivel hook with a re-usable sheaf you dont have to put shrink tube on the join.

Hi Matt, I have copied this lead setup with the leader, insert and inline lead. However, the fox inline leads i am using have a larger bore than the insert so seem to be a looser fit than the what is shown in the video. My set up is more a running rig than semi fixed. Please can you let me know what leads you are using in the setup. Thanks, Mike
Hi Mike, yes Fox leads are a looser fit than some other manufacturers so I’m not surprised by this. I think in this video I used some Nash leads but Nash is in the process of changing lead suppliers so you can’t even buy those any more. Since I made this video I’ve been experimenting with free running inline rigs and I’ve found that they work extremely well as is. The only downside is that it’s difficult to create a tell tale effect unless you are using them in a solid PVA bag (which I am doing in this video). Personally I’d just use the ones you’ve got. They will work great even without the little bump effect. If you can create a tell tale then great. Hope that helps, cheers, Matt.
@@matthewcollinsangler Cheers for the reply Matt. I think I will stick with them then if you’re saying you have had some good results, these will only be used in solid pva bags. With the running rig I presume it is more critical to have a sharper hook and tighter line to the lead as you don’t benefit as much with the bolt affect. By tell tale affect do you mean if you have been done by the carp like shown in some of your other rigs?
@@MikeyyGGGGG Hi Michael, hook sharpness is everything no matter what rigs you choose. I don’t worry so much about line tightness, I just use the right tension for the situation and tight, backleaded and slackline all work with running leads. Yes, the tell tale is a trick I use to indicate whether I’m being done. If you are using solid PVA bags then I would use a relatively long, supple tell tale tied to the mainline swivel. Just use some old braid. It doesn't even matter if it pokes out of the top of the bag. If you have an occurrence and the lead has slid above the tell tale so it’s poking downwards, instead of upwards, you’ve absolutely been done. @@matthewcollinsangler Yes very true about hook sharpness, it’s a weaker part of my angling that I’m trying to improve.. Hey man can you please do a video on techniques to get hooks out of carps mouth, i can unhook a bass no issues but sometimes i struggle to get them out of carps fatty lips
Hi mate, thanks for the suggestion. So to remove a micro barbed hook, you need to apply pressure to the hook eye in the direction of the hook shank while holding the mouth next to the hook point firmly in position. You’ll hear a pop and the hook’s out.
These days, I only fish barbless hooks which are much easier to remove and I remove them in the water, so another option for you is to go barbless.

I make my bags up the day before, and just before casting, that’s when I inject liquids. That way, no soft bag and I can change the liquid/quantity at any time.
Hi mate, thanks for commenting. Yes that’s a good point and one I forgot to mention. That’s easier if you use liquids such as the Goo or Nash's Plume juice as the pot has a nozzle which is perfectly suited to doing that. Cheers, Matt.
@@matthewcollinsangler I have syringes that have a blunt, wide bore needle attached (can accidentally jab yourself with them). I then draw up any PVA friendly liquid and inject.
I use a lot of the Dynamite Baits liquids, especially the sweet tiger nut or Red Amo.
hey, i got a question. so we are driving to the czech republic and there we are fishing at a depth at around 30-40 meters. is it possible to fish with solid pva bags at that depth?

Never done it mate, I don’t know really, only one way to find out! You could always triple bag it or use a lot of salt on some pva mesh to slow down the breakdown rate.

Hi Matthew, have you tried fishing solid bags with pure running rigs? What’s your thoughts on this?
Yes absolutely works a treat, best way I’ve found to do it is to replace the plastic insert with an extra long anti tangle sleeve. You need to make sure that the lead runs freely on and off the sleeve. You might find you’ll need to very slightly open out the hole in the lead to get a free running fit (gun drill works a treat).
Wonder what I'd have to do to make this work with canned corn.

Would you add a shock leader?
Hi Rob, I use a shock/abrasion leader either based on the nature of the environment (rocky) or range (90yds+). Other than that, I fish straight through to a cling on leader. I also depends on the size of the bag. If you want to use a big bag at 90yds, then yes, you'll need a shock leader. Cheers, Matt

Hi Gary, I assume you mean the in-line lead insert? I use the Nash one. There are two versions: a standard D-cam finish and a tungsten one. Both work well with most inline leads. I was using a Nash inline lead for this video. Cheers, Matt
You have an amazing way of making a straightforward rig really awkward as with the slip D at the start. I’ve never lost a fish, mostly big ones by using supernatural, wide gape and a small kicker or maybe a “normal slip D” … you must have lots of spare time at your lake mate thinking, “hmm, how can I make a simple rig look trickier” … the loop in the line? What’s wrong with a super strong figure of 8 loop? Seems very excessive to me

Totally appreciate the detail in the prepping of the rig, ie drying it out, but there is far too much going on here, the hole carp fishing industry is gone bonkers, rigs are way too fussy, we unfortunately think carp are to clever! Don't get me wrong it's great to watch and I do Injoy the rigs that people invent, but if you pick up any carp magazine the basics haven't changed for way over 10 years, there is a saying! When you over think somthing and this is a perfect example.

I’ve never actually tried using mono in a solid bag so I can’t recommend it. Even fine mono is just too stiff and it will kink very easily if you try to fold it into a bag. TBH I use PVA mesh for most of my fishing and it’s very successful so I really wouldn’t worry. Best of luck, Matt.

I wouldn’t put the lead in the middle of the bag the boilie can end up under the lead stupid; lead in first on the back of the bag boilie in after on the opposite side so the bag can’t flip
Oooor: boil some potatoes, call a couple of friends, dump a potato in the pond, have some beer, talk some shit and wait if something bites. If it bites, good. If not: next weekend again.
But of course, you can also steam some plastic tube in order to cover a millimeter of line. It's up to you :)

In my experience, there are different qualities of pva and I’ve found the cheaper grades can leave residue as you say. I don’t think it makes a difference to catching or not ☺️
6mm pellets are way to big go 2mm or smaller
Yeah I totally get why some would prefer smaller pellets. I choose my pellet size depending on the season and the water temperature. Pellets break down quicker in warm temps so I fish with small pellets in the winter and larger ones in the summer 😉 Depends on the venue as well, if you’re fishing a runs water with quick action or a specimen water in the winter, then 2mm is definitely a good choice.

Ah right, I though it was because I added a little extra to your awesome tutorial. It was simply saying, try using a PVA Loader Bag System. They are awesome. You dont have to buy an expensive brand one, they are all the same. They simply hold the bag open for you so it easier to fill, and you do not need pea string. The make the bags far more streamline, with far less effort. Check them out Matt. Seriously, it will be the best £3.50 you ever spend. When you watch a video on one, I guarantee you will agree and get one. 👍🏼

Ive always struggled doing pva bags, its like; If you was shovelling rubbish and trying to hold the black bin bag open, its always easier if someone is holding it open for you. This tool is the same difference, the bag is held totally open while you put stuff in, then finishing is excellent. @@matthewcollinsanglerThanks Matthew! I only fish on large rivers in the Netherlands and feed the core of a zone using a baitboat containing a large batch of partical mix and crushed boilies. The outer ring only contains whole and half boilies, where I occasionally use a bag filled with soaked boilies to position my rig. I have the feeling that the smaller and greedy fish eat the core and the carp keep their distance. This seem to work as I caught some big ladies.
