Carp fishing is filled with myths which mask what’s actually going on under the surface. In this video I address the myth of the autumn feed-up. If you’ve not heard this one before, the “theory” is that the carp will be feeding hard on the run up to winter because they know there will be less natural food available for them to eat during the colder months. This might sound like a sound hypothesis but it's not supported by any science and it doesn't fit with my observations as an angler and a fishery owner. I’d love to hear your opinions on the autumn feed-up myth so feel free to hit the keyboard and share your thoughts!
I think the biggest problem on some venues that one might fish doesnt stem from anything that you personally could have done wrong on the day but the other anglers around you that insist on dumping dustbin loads of loose feed into the water every 15mins. They do the same thing in the summer so they do it in the winter and when you have a load of anglers doing it. It ruins the fishing for everyone.

Over the years I've found small amounts of baits works well far more often than sticking loads of bait in on commercial lakes. A solid bag with a single bait and a handful fired over the top works.
On pressured lakes that regularly see a lot of bait a single kg can last all day when fishing day tickets.

Autumn feed up is definitely not a myth imo , most fish have generally been pressured all year by this time so there double alert but the rewards are certainly there to be had if you get it right , i had 72 bites early one December few years back just doing few hours after work over a couple of weeks , best time of year other than may and a lot of anglers throw in the towel leaving more swims available to

November is always good for me, I always seem to have a good July too then a dry aug/ end of summer but once autumn comes like it just did I was getting between 4-7 most trips upto late nov, blanked last 3 now since cold.

A very interesting, well reasoned and put together video indeed, well done Matt. As to the Autumn feed myth, I think each lake acts slightly differently according to its properties and weather conditions. What is definite though is the carp generally feed consistently and enthusiastically in the Autumn on anglers baits not being distracted by as many naturals with both angler and air pressure regularly dropping. I stick with the Autumn feed “myth” theory because generally using small PVA traps I have always seen a marked acceleration in the number of fish caught in late Sept-Dec compared to late Summer conditions. That could well be purely due to there being less naturals but as it is my favourite time of year and I like my confidence to be high as I say I’ll stick to telling myself to “get out of bed and go fishing because they are really having it during the Autumn feed”. Before this weeks freeze with my limited fishing time my tactic is single baits , left in for 45 minutes then moved ( sooner if any signs of carp )
Any fish or interest then a few bits of bait go in
They’ve recently curiously moved away from the normal clay or gravel areas to the siltiest leaf collection parts of the bottom
When the lead hits these areas it’s like a balloon has just burst there’s that much of an eruption of bubbles from the bottom
Its a myth on modern lakes/heavily pressured venues.. it happens still on "natural" venues or likes that still have a close season
Sadly I cannot get into pay waters with known stock. The carp scene is morally bankrupt

Hi mate, I’ve been using the Scopex Squid at the fishery and in my fishing for the last 3 years. The main reason I use it is that it contains 30% protein so it’s really good for the carp's health and more importantly they absolutely love it! I swap to the Citruz when the weather gets really cold because that bait has been optimised for winter use. Cheers, Matt.

I dont think autumn feed up is a myth persay, i think the catches slow up due to the naturals that are present from hatches at the time of year. we assume that the carp have had enough to eat because they are harder to catch but in actual fact i believe it is because they preferr their natural food source of insects at that time of year. just my opinion.
Iv found if got week in france feed light first 2-3 days with not lot bait going in the lake the latter end week always do really well as fish really seeking out the food obvs only works if got lake exclusive
And most important find the fish

Hi Ray, the Ultegra 5500s would pair nicely with 10ft Shimano’s. Within that range there are various options at different price points but they all work. Merry Christmas 🎄
Can you tell me what components you use for your inline setup please and would I be able to use tubing as its a club rule thanks
Hi mate, if you need to use rig tubing then switch the Tungsten XL anti tangle sleeve for a silicon tail rubber and then just use the tag end of your mainline as a tell tale indicator. Shouldn't be a need to modify the inline lead as I did for this video.

What Hooklink are you using for the multi rig
Hi mate, that’s 25lb Armourlink. It’s just fine enough to pass through the eye of the size 8 longshank Twister but only just! If you struggle with threading, I’d use a threading tool or drop to 20lb Amrourlink. It’s very robust so shouldn’t be an issue. We’ll be doing a full video on that rig at some point next year.
Would a bead be alright just to use as a normal bottom rig hair, I have used a bit of silicone tubing to differentiate if been done
Hi mate, there are a variety of ways of creating a tell tale indicator, silicon beads, silicon tubes, blowback tubes. They all do the same job, it's just a matter of choosing something that works for you. I like this arrangement because I can swap the hook out and the hook is the most important part of any rig. Traditional hair rigs work great (with a sharp hook) but if you're not re-sharpening or tying a new rig every cast, then you're fishing with a blunt hook which is kind of pointless. Tying fresh rigs can get expensive so if I’m using Armourlink then I prefer the multi rig. If I’m casting I prefer mono hair or mono d rigs tied with 15lb Zig-Flo or 30lb heavy duty snag leader as hooklink as it’s 1/5th of the cost. I don’t need a tell tale with mono rigs as they’ll tell me whether I’ve been done because the mono deforms. It’s horses for courses at the end of the day 😊

Hi mate, this is a variation of the multi rig made with supple braid (25lb Armourlink). The mechanics are completely different for mono rigs. I don’t use fluoro at all for any of my carp fishing.
Matt, can you show how to tie the tell tale set up with leader and inline lead please?
We’ll be launching a video next year showing this in more detail. In the meantime, here’s what I do: Tie some 25lb Armourlink to the swivel at the bottom of the Cling-on leader. A 3 turn uni knot works well. Then I slide a tungsten XL anti tangle sleeve onto the leader and over the end of the swivel. I had to drill out the inline lead to make the hole larger and make it easier to poke the tell tale through. Lick the tell tale and anti tangle sleeve to glue the two together. This makes threading the tell tale into position easier. This system works as long as the lead stays over the swivel. If you drop it from a bait boat with a large parachute bag on the hook you’ll drag the telltale out prematurely and you’ll think you’re being done when you haven't been. Hope that helps. If you want to use a supple Slip-D rig or Slip Multi I’d definitely stick to an inline lead. I don’t like to use supple hooklinks with swivel leads as they are buggers for tangling. I’d happily cast an inline lead with a supple hooklink 60+ yards but do make sure you hit the clip and land the rig. If you can’t do that then stuff the whole lot into a solid PVA bag. If you can’t do that then use a mono rig and a swivel lead.

Hi mate, if the water temp is 10 degrees or above them I’d just use a good quality food type boilie such as Scopex Squid (30% protein). When the temp really drops I’d switch to a lower protein bait (19%) such as Citruz that’s been optimised for winter use. You could also use tiger nuts in small quantities. If you're casting then I’d just do what I do all year. Cast small PVA sticks at them. Dot some baits over the top and see what happens. Leave them in place for the duration of the session. No point in re-casting unless you know when bite time is 😊 Cheers, Matt

@@redvalley9 It's very popular but it's not really for me, from a nutrition standpoint it’s at the lower end of the protein scale at around 18% so it’s an attractor style bait rather than a food bait.
@@redvalley9 I don't have one. I did have a play with one that a guest brought but it was pretty useless TBH because the visibility just isn't good enough for that type of equipment at my lake. I’ll stick to my tried and trusted method that costs very little 😊
Autumn feed up is not a myth. Carp must build up fat reserves for the upcoming long winter where as the carp are mostly inactive for long periods of time. Thats why the carp are much heavier late autumn than in the summer where they burn lots of bodyweight fats duo to high watertemp. High watertemp. And airpressure also makes them feed a lot less in summer so they have to make up for bodyweight with cooler watertemp. And more oxygen in the water. On heavy baited waters all year long you dont have that autumn feeding effect because the carp starts eating lots of bait early in the year, say around late august. Every lake is different and if you have good watersense you can predict what is going on underwater
Don’t understand Matthew, watched a few of your videos, one that’s says don’t use kickers any more , now you show a rig with kicker ???
Hi mate, I understand why it’s confusing... I’ve been making videos for many years and my fishing style evolves from year to year. In this case though I still stand by my original statement of “don’t use kickers” because it’s the easiest way of ruining a perfectly decent rig. Many anglers add a kicker for no good reason believing that they are making the rig better, when in fact they are making it worse. In more recent years I have experimented with the use of small readymade kickers when I need them for a specific job. In this video, I’m testing a new ‘double locked’ multi rig and I use the kicker to create a secondary lock to hold the D in place which means I can use the rig for casting small PVA sticks. If I take the kicker away, and don’t use a PVA stick, it would still work great. Also, I cut back the neck of the kicker to prevent it from closing the gape of the hook. Cheers, Matt

Yes absolutely and when we have anglers on, I know what goes in the lake week in week out. We’re closed for the winter now so it’s just me 😊
