- I blanked for 3 weeks on a lake I’ve fished for 12 years and it was my longest blank ever on this lake. I got complacent, I got sloppy, my plan wasn’t good enough and I stuck to it for way too long. This is the story of how I worked the problem, how I changed what needed changing and how things clicked into place.

This video isn't about one rig being better than another. After we filmed this and the conditions changed again, I went back to my mono rig but shortened it down a few inches and fished it on the same running inline lead setup and hey presto it worked (on those same hard spots that I couldn't buy a bleep from!) If you’re blanking, I’m not suggesting that all you need to do is swap to a slip-D rig and that will fix your problem. Carp fishing simply isn't that simple (fortunately.) It was a humbling experience for me to suffer such a blank at Beausoleil after all these years but as always, it’s the blanks that teach us the most. I made this video to encourage you to keep working on the problem, keep the faith and you will crack it 💪
My dad said to me many years ago;
"Never go fishing with the expectations of catching fish. Go fishing to relax your body, mind and enjoy nature by the water. Catching fish is a bonus."
I have to say, I've never been let down when blanking, I've never beat myself up, I go home more relaxed than when I get there.

Hi. Just watched this video and it may have answered my problem. I've just fished a 2 acre lake near Limoges and the owner says he's never caught a carp on the left side of the lake! He tells everyone to fish the far bank or the right bank! Your idea may work! I'm back there end of March! Love the videos! 👍

Matt, another concise walk through of options when the going gets tough! Thank you mate! Here in the U.S., admittedly I do not get to fish much, due to heavier work schedule, heat, and at my age and with injuries and disabilities, the cold is unbearable anymore. I’d rather be laid out snoozing in a nice warm bivvy., 🤣🤣 perseverance has always paid off for me. My gpa always set the example of being patient, watching the water, let it tell it’s story, play along, and when the opportunity arises, you will be where you are supposed to be! This guy has tried everything over the years and he is the type of angler who methodically works for a bite. The inline leads are the best so much better than a lead clip. As soon as the fish switched on they found the sweet taste of his bait too much to resist, he caught when carp are dormant he made them feed.

the youtubers that cluster their content with small talking, ads, paid promotions, falsify their catches with hidden background information, like they were pre-baiting the spot for 2 weeks etc, all the long videos that i watch for information that could be said in a short few minutes - they are the DESERT.

Great video Matt. Nice to show the reality of fishing . Over the years I have come to realise that blanking is so an important part of fishing. If I did not it would too easy. I would not had go through developing my knowledge in river and lake craft and understanding fish habits. But when you finally find the way and it all comes together , it’s ecstatic and all those mentally challenging days are soon forgotten. That’s what helps me to persist.

Hi Matt, I really enjoyed the content, I have spoken to you in the past about struggling with my fishing. You did say then try and be consistent. Great video as always Matt, thank you. Other way around for me, I watched your video on the mono D rig a while back and tied up a couple, I was having an awful January, 6 blanks in a row so gave one a go. Instant results and I've used nothing else since, amazing how what seems like a small change can have such a difference. Previously I was using Ronnie's or short braid/PVA. I've never been super confident of tying my own rigs so I love the simplicity of it and it gives me total confidence, never had one come back tangled or with a missing bait and I'm frequently catching when others are not my local pressured day tickets. Keep up the good work :)

I blank quite often because most of the time i only have 1 or 2 hours to spare, but for me being in the nature makes it all worth.
So i don´t feel bad after blanking at all.
Neither do I mate, it's part of fishing and the best way to learn.

Absolute Quality Matt. You have certainly inspired me to keep going. It is hard when you blank day after day. But I agree, believe in yourself, try a few new tactics & never give up & you will get there in the end. When an experienced angler like yourself shows you that it can be hard going even for you, it makes me believe there is no reason why I can't catch those big boys as well if I take a leaf out of your book. I was just dozing a bit on the sofa and thought, "look what's new from Matt"! The classic conflict apparently: on the one hand patience pays off, but at some point you have to admit you were wrong and try something else. Congratulations on your patience and finding the right solution after all! 👌
Thanks for the repeated suggestion to try running rigs after all. After years of almost completely suppressing them, I feel encouraged by you to use running rigs more purposefully. In the earlier years of carp fishing, there was a term "confidence rig" that describes the reason for using running rigs quite well. The carp (and obviously other species) are supposed to feel confident playing around with the bait. On the other hand, there is a feeling in my head and heart that makes me doubt: How do I make sure the hook is set where it belongs? How do I make sure the hook is set at all? Am I quick enough on the rod, especially when I'm brought out of a deep sleep? Sure these questions are weird when you have a lot of experience with running rigs, which I do not have. But maybe in the end it is (as always) a mixture of the right rig, confidence and (enough) time at the bank.

Hi Alex, your questions on running rigs are totally understandable and sensible. What you have to remember is that mono is a giant elastic band. There will be a video on this specific topic in the future 😊
Nice video Mathew, everyone seems obsessed with getting on the hardest spots they can. I guess the theory is, that it's hard because carp have fed heavily there. But I see a trend developing now where people are more inclined to fish in the silt. The venue I fish, is very much a find the fish first venue and tbh if they're in an area, I stopped caring what's on the bottom. I'll fish in the soft, hard and weed if that's where the fish are. Just need to tweak rigs so i can present as well as possible. I tend to stick to helis, as This let's me quickly adapt to whatever the bottom is.

As someone who always fishes helicopter setups and simple hair rigs only i "hate" watching your videos that pose so many questions and suggest i could be doing a lot better than i am 😄 but seriously even though i dont change much myself (only really fishing park lakes for average sized carp) i much prefer your approach and not just following trends for the sake of it.

Hi Ian, glad you enjoyed the video. I think that’s happening because I’m using lighter leads but it’s not an issue at all.
@@matthewcollinsangler thanks mate, was interested because even when I use light leads and a running rig I've never had a drop-back as the lead hasn't moved on the bottom.

Hi mate, thanks for the suggestion. I’d say take a bucket of soapy water, a sponge and a toothbrush. I use an electric toothbrush for fine details like reel seat, rod rings and small crevices on the reel. Cheers, Matt

Matt you added quite a few changes there..have you used the older rig in 7inch sharpy swears by this length in mono..
I did go back to the mono rig, shortened it down to about 7in and fished it with a running inline to bring the lead in to play quicker and that worked great 👍

Hi MR collins...so i have a question...i fisfhed a very small river 2 weeks ago and cought 14 fish for the day,6 carp and 8 mudfish,using a single mielie pip on the hook..this friday i fished the same spot and the same bait however no a single bite...what will possibly the main cause for that?..thanx
Hi there, 2 weeks ago, the fish were there, and now they’ve moved. Fish in rivers are very mobile and nomadic. If you want consistent results on the rivers, you need to pre bait regularly. Hello Matt. Sorry to trouble you again. I fish a very silty old estate lake in Kent. It’s full of lilies and leaf debris so I wondered what rig you would suggest? It’s far from over fished as it’s a syndicate with around 25 members. In fact when I’ve been, there’s never more than 3 or 4 people fishing. Cheers
Hi Bob, I'd use what I used in this video, the slip d rig, on a lightweight running inline lead. That's exactly the sort of bottom I was fishing over, and it works. All the best, Matt
Speaking of air pressure, what is the optimal pressure for carp fishing ?
Depends on the time of year which influences water temperature and therefore oxygen levels. In the spring, when oxygen levels are high, then a pressure drop down to 1000mb or below is perfect. The same pressure drop in the summer when the water temp is high and oxygen levels are low can completely kill the fishing.
How did you get on with the 8lb hooklength's?
No good mate, too thin, tangled too easily, went back to 12lb 👍

Hi, I have not heard this idea before that bottom baits must have a hair to be successful. I use bottom baits straight out of the bag for 99% of my fishing and every year I catch loads of big carp on rigs without a hair such as the slip D, the multi rig and the mono D rig. Hope that helps!

You people don't half overthink everything lol was this the case 30 years ago ,imo it's gone full circle,I would look back to the old school way of things ,straight bottom baits ,hairs off the shank ,stringers ,braid ,drennan continentals,as for bait you can soak anything in marmite ,that's what I do and it's so good it's almost like cheating

Try blanking for 5 months on a 90 acre water, 100 fish. No nights, 2 rods only and from 1 bank with peg restrictions and weed top to bottom. Ohh, and no boats, casting only.
That's a challenge for sure! I'm doing plenty of day sessions on big waters at the moment too without boat.

We have cats to 135lbs. I tried zigs once and I foul hooked a 60lb catfish in the pectoral fin on 8lb Pro Clear and it took me 1h30 to land!
