There’s nothing worse than winding in a rod, only to realise the bait is gone! All species love boilies, bream, roach, chub, poisson chat, crayfish but if they are where the carp are, adjustments have to be made. Readymade hardened hookbaits have been available for years but they aren't cheap so I like to make my own. In the past I’ve air dried them, or glugged them but this year I wanted to have a go at salt curing. Each brand of bait varies of course so you might have to do a bit of experimentation but through a combination of air drying + salt curing + spraying and then rolling in salt, it’s pretty easy to create really tough, highly attractive hookbaits for very little money. I hope that you give this a go and if you’ve already done this and have some ideas to share then I’d love to hear them.

Blood plasma is brilliant for hard hook baits it goes in all my gard hook bait range.
Learned a new trick! Thanks Matt!
Cool! I only tried this this season and it's been working a treat!
Thanx for this vid and explanation Matt, really good material to work with. 😊👌
Cool, hope you have fun with it Ilonca 😊
Love the bait videos
Cool, thanks mate 😊
Great educational video 👍
Didn’t think of that
Stunning carp 🙌👋
Thank you 😊
Thanks Matt, will give this a go, salt also seems to go down well in the winter months, great upload, great narration, much appreciated!
Thanks very much Paul 👍 Salt works all year round.
Awesome video Matt. Hopefully this will solve my bait issues 🤞
I hope so too mate, I haven't had any problems with crays since I've started salt curing 😊
Nash do a shrink wrap for baits to stop this
HI Mathew, love the films excellent content and no company bias.
Would the salt method work for pop ups and ready mades to get harder hook baits, off to France later this month and lake is full of crays, thanks
Hi mate, I wouldn’t use popups if there are crays, way too small. I’ve never tried making popups harder so not sure how that would work. I fish big bottom baits, I use the scopex stabilised in 24mm with a nice, simple and robust heavy duty mono rig. I don’t have crays at my lake but many visitors use this rig because it’s very anti tangle and cheap to make. If the crays play with it, they won’t kill your chances of a pickup. You’ll be re-casting every 4 hours I expect anyway. Use only boilies and spread them over a wide area, gives the crays less to home in on.
Here’s a quick overview of the rig I’m talking about:

Hope that gives you food for thought and all the best for your trip!
@matthewcollinsangler thank you will
Give it a go.
If you roll your own hookbaits add extra egg albumen to harden hookbaits then coat n cure in salt its nothing new done it for years
Thanks Matthew great content again, I work for a bait company and we have a range of salt cured baits.
Definitely the way to go alongside hard hookers
Marvelous matt, just got back from France and i had to resort to plasic bait which caught me carp but i would rather catch carp on food baits alot more satisfying if you know what i mean!!! Thanks for the tips,Danboy🎣🎣
Know exactly what you mean mate! This is fun to make and works a treat! Hope you had a good trip 🎣
Love your videos what bait would you rdckonend for the winter
Hi mate, depends on what you class as winter TBH. I only really worry about switching to a dedicated winter bait when the water temps are below 13 degrees. Carp can’t digest much protein in cold water so you want something with sub 20% protein ideally. You also want a bait that contains ingredients that are soluble at low temperatures. For the last few years I’ve used the Nash Citruz and that works well because it’s specifically designed for winter use but it’s not the only option available. Rigs and hooks are more important than bait flavour. Cheers, Matt.
@matthewcollinsangler thank you for the reply , I'll have a little look into it ive learned so much from your hair hook videos I was always putting the line through the front and wondered why I was missing bites I've had loads more success since learning from your video even making the correct rigs thank you fit your response kind regards callum
@@crazycarp5045 That's fantastic to hear Callum, glad I could help you out in your fishing 👍
Hi Matthew great informative video , will try that with my scopex.
What River is that ? ( not asking for location). Looking to Fish some French Rivers that are accessible & able to camp or b&b .
Cheers….
Cool mate, still working great for me.
I fish the Mayenne in NW France. Here’s a video I’ve done on one of my sessions if you haven’t seen it: czcams.com/video/d7TJuAt5hkk/video.html.
Here’s the link to the department’s fishing association, you’ll find some general info on there: www.fedepeche53.com/
(I do guiding sessions a couple of times a year for some anglers)
Thanks Matthew 👌
Oil is great for making them tougher and are great attraction. Very oily dips and soak boilies in them is perfect for me
Hmm interesting, not tried soaking my baits in oil, thanks for the tip 👍
@@matthewcollinsangler give it a go mate. Oils a fat so in the autumn when the carp are bulking for the winter oil works amazingly well.
@@CKzoidYT I will 👍
What sort of oil. Extra virgin cooking oil ?
Try adding extra egg albumen for harder hook baits
Thanks for the tip 👍
Blood plasma whey gel 80 too .I make and sell baits blood plasma is brilliant.
Do you use a 24 ml bottom bait too a size 6 hook matt
Yes that’s right 👍 Just don’t fish the bait too close to the hook, works great.
Would these baits work for uk river barbel also? My local is infested
Yes mate, absolutely, just experiment with the ratio of air dry time vs salt cure time to get the result you need.
i used ten year old popups i had they still they still had them, even nicking my fake maize, ill try gauze next time
Crays love popups so I'm not surprised... rock hard bottom baits work great 👍
Just buy the nash bait wrap
I've got armamesh mate but I fancied trying something new (for me) and see how it goes and I love the result!
