- Catching catfish with boilies and pellets in a mixed fishery is a winning tactic.
In this video, I show you how to catch catfish with boilies and pellets. This isn’t one for the dedicated catfish anglers who have their own methods. This is perfect for any carp angler who wants to catch a catfish at a mixed venue.

Cheers for making my Sunday and farther day better with something finally decent to watch
I acquired a pair of the original diawa infinity reels this year, do you think they'd be able to withstand catfish angling? I worry they'll get smashed when I paid quite a lot for them.
Hi mate, I’ve never owned a set myself but I’ve seen a few guests use them for both carp and catfish and there’s never been an issue at my lake with those reels. Being an older reel they are probably well engineered. The amount of load that goes through the reel is determined by how hard you play them and how tight your clutch is set. If you take your time, and are willing to tolerate some clutch induced line twist then you really shouldn't have an issue. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Mathew, my local day ticket holds cats apparently (not on the species list) but definitely in there , so I dare say I'll be putting a sleeper rod out with chicken livers ( after I double check with fishery ) and not directly linked to this video but I was wondering if you've ever used a deeper chirp in your fishing and what your thoughts are on this ? Many thanks jay.
Hi Jay, I have dabbled with a few different echo sounders that friends own but TBH I’ve never been that impressed. I like traditional methods of feature finding (marker rod, leading rod and prodding stick) and I don’t need anything else in my fishing. If I did a lot of boat work on big waters then I’m sure my answer would be completely different but that’s not the type of angling I do. Sorry can’t help you more there mate.
@@matthewcollinsangler that's no problem, there's a water over near me called seventy acres joining with Hooks marsh (lea valley) and I'm considering picking a sonar up , just getting some advice to see if the basic model will suffice ( Don't imagine the wife will believe it cost a fiver 🤣) however I'm still doing my homework on the matter 👍
@@matthewcollinsangler well it's only been a day and I've added a deeper to my basket a few times and removed it just as many, I've managed to resist the almost school boy desire to see the hidden underwater world and will return to basics of my leading rod and water craft as I've done for many years now and I'm almost £300 better off this evening as a result 👍
@@jayjay-bp7uz I applaud you mate! It's good to keep a bit of mystery in our sport, and there's nothing like getting a good feel of the water and the bottom with a leading rod, it's a key skill to have IMO 😊
Im looking to fish for a cat this year ive never tried before this video is great, so simple and effective with great tips cheers
Great to hear Jason, if you haven't seen it, I've done a catfish rig video as well: czcams.com/video/NkOZfsGNmbk/video.html. Hope you catch a big one this season!
@@matthewcollinsanglerwhich company does these rig components Matthew? I reakon it'll suit my UK river fishing approach😊
@@user-nl7vz4wt3t Hi mate, it depends on the river I guess. It’s okay for relatively slow rivers but not so good in flowing water as the hooklink may tangle. All the products I use in this video are from Nash.
Here’s what I’m using for my river carping:
24mm salt cured Scopex squid hookbaits
Size 6 barbless Twisters
For hooklink I use 30lb Nash heavy duty snag leader and the same material for a 6m length of leader. Mainline is 20lb Nash Bullet
The rig itself is a variation on the mono D with a blowback tube to create a long D. This short video will show you what I’m doing:

The lead system is just a simple running ledger with a plastic ring and a quick change clip so that changing lead sizes is easy. Here’s a photo from instagram:

It’s very robust, tangle resistant and can’t be interfered with by chub, bream or crays. It’s also relatively cheap to make, quick to tie and works very well.
Lovely but how much for bait for one session ? Do you know any budget version?
Hi mate, best value for money is large sacks of high protein pellets and a few boilies on top. I also use lake water to make the syrup go further.
In your lake and use mono for your fishing how does it cope with cats thanks
So at my lake, after years of testing, I only allow mono mainlines to be used. 20lbs Nash Bullet or 25lbs Big Game only. Sometimes this still isn't enough but we do have massive catfish (135lbs+). For hooklink I prefer Armourlink 35lbs but 30lb (0.50) Nash mono snag leader is capable of banking a big catfish. It’s all about the abrasion resistance against the pads. Regular 20lbs (0.40) Nash Bullet is tough enough (most of the time) for cats up to 70lbs but beyond that things can get a bit dicey. Only experience will tell you what you can and can’t get away with on any particular water.
Thanks for the reply
New logo looks cool matt
Fished for these in my teens on the river Ebro, can honestly say ive got zero interest in cats anymore. Not sure why, the scrap is unreal but theyre just giant eels to me now
Matthew speaks we should listen. 🙊
Happy Sunday mate 😊
@@matthewcollinsangler happy Sunday brother🍻
Yeah not really 😂
Can you do a video on how to avoid them?!
Thanks for the suggestion 😊 In a nutshell: use tigers if you can, or particles, it's got to be 100% vegetarian. Most boilies have some fish or meat based product in them and the cats love that. Cereal pellets work well as well, maize, sweetcorn, chickpea, all good options. Don't use popups!
@tomwinterfishing9065
One thing that @matthewcollinsangler didn't mention is that you can try and keep those catfish pre-occupied. Pick a spot away from where your fishing and bait the area with enough to keep the cats away from you. Cheap dog food, range cubes or fermented-stinky stuff. Plenty of recipes online.
I have a similar situation here in Pennsylvania on a river I fish for larger carp is that small-ish 5lb channel cats seem to love all things boilies, tiger nuts, chick peas or even pop up fake corn. Homemade non-fish meal boilies still land more cats then carp. I can tell by the sound of the alarm what species hit at this point its that bad. For whatever reason, maize/feed corn is the only bait that flips the equation around for that river.
@@jeffzak6790 Thanks very much for your note mate. You're spot on, I've used exactly the same tactic and it works very well.
Some of those catfish are huge!! So what else do they feed on besides pellets/boilies? After all they are a predator!!
Literally anything! We used to fish with live Eels on the river Ebro for them. Large lures also work, as you stated they are first and foremost predators
They'll eat anything, meat or fish based, alive or dead!

замечательно слышать thank you!!!
Never caught a cat before before heard they pull your arm off
Oh yes they do, it's an incredible experience especially in a 4 acre lake with a bridge!!
