    Carp fishing is a complicated sport because there are so many variables but it’s not rocket science either. What it does take is lots of time to figure out the jigsaw puzzle on a consistent basis. Here’s how my personal carp fishing has evolved and the habits that have had the biggest impact on putting more carp on the bank. Looking forward to the discussions 😊

I believe my angling was much better when keeping everything simple and went back to that mindset a while ago. Much prefer something that will reset perfectly & give you another chance, because has you say we get done alot & no rig is exempt of that.

    Great video Matthew, straight to the point and nice to see someone being a bottom bait advocate in the world of Ronnie's and Pop ups. The problem with Carp fishing nowadays is that there is so much information available, particularly on CZcams - no wonder people get confused and second guess themselves.
    Fishing in a more old school manner and putting limitations on the variables has improved my personal fishing so much in the last year or so. I think the common denominator with all of these habits is making the angler accountable. If you have a reliable rig, good bait and a sticky sharp hook, the only reason you don't catch is you and you'll become a better angler for it. I'm heading towards the end of my 2nd year and into my 3rd in carp fishing. I use more hooks than I used to, but it was definitely worth it to break my PB 5 times in the last 10 months.
    I certainly experimented too much and it leads to a lot of doubt. I came back around to the ronnie rig (albeit with some personal tweaks), mostly for it's hook changing ability than anything else. I personally don't think the 360 element makes it any more efficient, but perhaps a little better at resetting. It certainly hasn't been costing me any fish, but I don't use it all that often so I suppose time will tell.
    Thanks again for all you do Matt, and for teaching me to fish.

    Hi Matt, thank you for helping once again to focus on the really important things: "Less is more" and "Keep it simple, stupid". To the point!
    Unfortunately, the tackle industry and all the clever specialists regularly try to get you to try this and that little thing. Okay, they earn their money with it, that's fine in principle, but mostly I lack confidence in all these tricks, bits & pieces. Nor have I found that you can make much better catches with them. It's obviously confidence that matters.
    I have already taken many of the things you presented to heart. I pay a lot more attention to detail now, I took a lighted loupe with me and damn, you're right! The last few fish have really bent the hook tips just like you show! I have to say the last few because I didn't look at it that closely before, even though I had the loupe at home. Although I mostly changed the hook as well after a catch but more "for safety" and not because I really saw any damage. Exchanging hooks after retrieve can also be really necessary, I can confirm that by 100%, after having a look through the loupe... The tip of the hook can be massacred, depending on the lake bed...
    I am really thankful for your videos because you are not bragging with the biggest and shiniest carp but you show (less experienced anglers) in an unpretentious way how to avoid common mistakes and catch carp. Priceless!👍👍👍👍👍

    Hi Matt and thanks for the great content as usual. I've really enjoyed a simplified baiting approach this year (favouring quality carp pellet predominantly) and am keen to better understand oil / protein content for cold water baiting. I've just checked my low oil, "all season" pellet and it's 36% protein, much higher than you recommended. Is that bad for carp health or just less likely to induce feeding? I'd be grateful if you could point to any good literature on the subject. All the best, Mark.

    • @matthewcollinsangler

Nothing wrong with using the pellet, just use a small amount, in a pva bag for example, see my video on pva traps if you don’t know it: czcams.com/video/Km35wH2V2TA/video.html. I don’t have links to the scientific papers that have been published on this topic, this is something I’ve learnt working with top fishery consultants. Cheers, Matt.

    5 things that changed my carp fishing…
    #1, my club didn’t look after the lakes when the levels were down 3+ foot with low oxygen and all the big carp died.
    #2, I joined another club with bigger waters but now can only do days until i get a night ticket which is like gold dust.
    #3, I get looked down at because im now a day angler on this new club and many of the night boys wont even talk to me.
    #4, I’ve started fishing day ticket lakes so i can do nights again and 24/48 hrs, but again it’s all hush hush about what fish have died etc.
    #5, I feel carp fishing isn’t what it used to be, people getting upset cos you catch the biguns, people blanking you then sit watching you all day with binoculars hoping you break a rule, not wanting to come help with pictures cos you’re just a day noddy, wankers pre baiting 10kg in the swim next to you as you fish. Pretty fed up with it all to be honest, I’ve fished since i was 7 years old with my dad, im 43 now and have caught loads of big carp in my time but all these younguns get so territorial of the lakes they fish its just not fun anymore to sit there and wonder who’s gonna come up next and make comments and sneer at me. It’s getting to the point im gonna start telling people to fu#k off as soon as they approach me.

    99% of my fish are coming within 2 hrs of casting out a 5 bait stringer.. if I don’t have anything in that time and leaveit out for upto 15 plus hours I get nothing ??

      @matthewcollinsangler  Před rokem +1

      Hi Glen, glad you’re enjoying the channel and the mono rigs! So a 10 acre lake is a big lake, if you cast out and get a quick pick up, it means you’re on fish and everything’s working. On another day, if you cast out and nothing happens, then the fish have moved on, or the fish have switched off, it happens. I’ve experienced the same thing on big lakes or the river.

    I've had a lot of single beeps in the night or it will beep then drop back. I've always put this down to line bites. Thinking that's when my line gets caught by the tail of a fish nowhere near my bate.

    Question. I chanced upon a certain patch of river in my country, that happen to have wild river carp. What would be good hookbait and pre-bait to catch them? I usualy feeder fish for bream, barbel, and have caught a few smaller carp, under 10lb, on maggots and yellow 10mm rubber popups. Bigger ones occasionaly come on sweet corn, but there is absoultely zero pattern to what they are in a mood to take. River bottom is 50-50 between silt and gravel/rocky. Depth in the main flow is about 7-8ft, and in the shalows in the middle of the river, where the grass is, about 3-4ft.
    What I really want to know is, what do I feed, when and where do I feed, and on what do I catch? Most, if not all videos on CZcams speak about catching carpo on lakes, commercial or wild. Very little on river fishing.
    Can provide pictures from the place, and google maps location, if it helps.
    Thank you.

      Hello Aleks, I’ve done a very detailed video this year on river carping which will answer your questions: czcams.com/video/d7TJuAt5hkk/video.html. For the rig, here’s what I use, it’s a quick overview, we’ll do a full video on it in the future: czcams.com/users/shortsCh032Nsihcc?feature=share. Hopefully, these will give you some things to try. All the best, Matt

    Hi Matt, I am trying to feed my mono line through the rubber tubing to prevent tangles, I am using 12lb Sinking Mono, but the line only goes around 3/4 of the way before stopping. I have also tried using the wire feeder made for feeding through tubing, but that also stops part of the way. I have just seen a video you produced using a weight at one end to keep the tubing in a straight line, which I have not yet tried. Both the tubing and fishing line have been cut at an angle as per your video. I even tried wire but they seem to stop part the way through. Any other suggestions I can try? Your advice on these videos you produce are excellent and I look for new videos as you produce them but subscribing to your videos. Many Thanks, Norman

      Hi Norman, if you're trying to thread tubing that's been used once before then forget it, it's not possible. If you're struggling to thread your mainline down fresh tubing out the packet, I don't know what to say... try another brand? What I've done in the past is if you know that you can get the line down a certain distance, just cut the tubing at that point - make partial cuts until you find the depth the mono has got to. As long as you've got 50cm of tubing, that's enough in most situations. Hope that helps 😊

    After years I've gone back to sunset amnesia black and drennan continentals size 6 ,I use these on chods and bottom baits a like , use to use berkley big game mainline but its just not the same as it was so ridge monkey flouro coated is my choice now.

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  Před rokem +1

      I like the Drennan continentals as well, very strong, not sharp enough out the packet for me but they sharpen up well. I like Amnesia too but I'm not a fan fluoro, I don't need it for my fishing, I prefer mono 😊

      I get where your coming from with mono ,my biggest fish so far was one that only comes out twice a year apparently,I was the 3rd to catch it that year ,in a swim no one fishes on the most basic mono bottom rig you can think of ,I often think the angler makes it complicated when it should be simple ,a good rule of thumb is to find out what everyone else is doing ,then do the complete opposite.

    So a barb weakens the hookpoint yet the hooks must be sharpened - meaning filing off (thinning) hook point material... Right.

    I was wondering what your go-to rig for fast a current river with passing weeds?

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  Před rokem

      Hi mate, I don’t fish rivers like that but if I did, I’d go with a multi rig with 25lb Skinlink and size 6 Nash chod twister. I wouldn’t strip any of the coating back. In that situation, you’ll have to recast frequently and with the multi rig, you can quickly change the hook if you damage one on the retrieve. I’d also use a bait screw for speed.
      Here are the links to the products I use:
      Skinlink: amzn.to/3QSUAFk
      Chod twisters: amzn.to/3e6V38t
      Bait screws: amzn.to/3FmxuUy
      Here’s my multi rig video, but with a different hook, now I prefer a chod style: czcams.com/video/ekdkM52dSq8/video.html
      Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt

      It's very different in parts of Europe, we fish for them 'catch and release' style. There's a whole industry dedicated to carp fishing.

    When on a lake using lead clips and simple hair rig.what way is best to set up the rod rests?? I always have mine horizontal to the water ,but I see a lot of people having the rod tip up in the air?? Just wondering what is best or if it's just personal preference?? Plus I'm fishing tomo in this torrential rain and wondered if anyone had any good tips for carping in the heavy rain as the south of England looks like a wash out tomorrow

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  Před rokem +1

      Rig choice has nothing to do with the angle of your rods in the water. The factors to consider for rod angle are: depth, wind and amount of weed. Having your rods horizontal is fine unless it’s a very weedy water in which case, I'd fish tips up. I’ve covered this topic in this video which may help you: czcams.com/video/j_NSmA2CtQQ/video.html
      Cheers, Matt.

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  Před rokem

      Hi Kaz, I think there are 2 possibilities:
      1.The hair is not exiting from the shaft at the correct angle and you just need to rotate the knot on the hook shank until it exits straight, then pin it in place with the bead.
      2.If you’re using a different pattern of hook and a different diameter of mono, it’s possible that the hooklink won’t exit the eye as you want. Rather than change the hook or the hooklink, I’d have a to at pinning it to a rig board under tension to force it to be straight. You could also try and steam it while under tension.
      Does that help?

    So when I'm smashing carp out on maggots in the winter ! Which are 90% protein I'm getting it wrong ! Also how does a carp come up to a boilie in the winter and know its low protein? Your telling me the carp is not taking a bait because its hard to digest as its high protein! Carp now have ESP for boilie ingredients.. from now on every one should use sweetcorn in the winter as its low protein...
