Hi, my name is Andrew. I play the Violin, the Viola, and the French horn, as well as sing and play a little guitar for fun. I enjoy a wide variety of music, and this channel is the place where I just have fun doing my favorite thing, playing music.😁
I'm often asked where/if I go to school, so I'll briefly explain here:
-I graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree in Horn Performance in 2022
-I will be attending the Indiana University Jacob’s School of Music starting fall 2024 pursuing a Master of Music degree double majoring in Violin and Viola Performance
I also spent one year pursuing a Master’s degree in Violin Performance at Temple University from 2022-23, but in the meantime have been taking a gap year.
Thanks for looking, I hope you enjoy my videos, and I hope you have a wonderful day!

A. Bruckner, Symphony Nr. 5 Finale, Low Brass
I used to be a low brass player back in the day, and I really miss it! It's fun to get the opportunity to mess around on these instruments again. This finale to Bruckner 5 is so epic, I just had to give it a try.

Wow! Your ability to play multiple instruments always amazes me. Another great display of this here. I love low brass as well although I play none. It's always good to see new content from you, Andrew. Thanks again. 👋 📯
Thank you so much Mimi! It's all just too much fun😅
Gosh, i love the 1al mouthpiece, one of the best-fitting and most comfortable for my mouth that ive ever tried. And such a beautiful bone to go with it. Beautiful playing as always, keep it up (:
Thanks dude! Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah the 1AL plays great on every bass I've tried so far, awesome
That was very nice bro. You have a very strong noble tone on all of those. Very warm deep Contrabass sound too❤

Guessing...correct if im wrong....in order of size, Bb Tenor, Bb Symphonic Tenor & FF Bass Trombone? And CC Contrabass Tuba?
@@nolimitsnuttbusts4uVery close! Basically the order is, small bore Bb tenor, large bore symphonic tenor, Bb/F bass trombone (only one valve, but full .562 bore), and BBb contrabass tuba
@@andrewstump6138 Ahhh.... gotcha! 😂 Close enough haha. Question, do you consider the Horn a low brass instrument too?
Close enough for sure! I personally do not consider horn a low brass, the reason being the mouthpiece size. The rim of a horn mouthpiece is a similar size to a trumpet mouthpiece and significantly smaller than even a small tenor trombone mouthpiece, making the embouchure very very different. So, despite the fact that the horn can play quite low, because of the mouthpiece and embouchure, I consider it a high brass instrument.
@@andrewstump6138Interesting perspective bro, understandable. Nobody really writes low stuff for the Horn anyways lol. I always wondered what different people think because if you ask ten people which is it you might get five different answers. They definitely have a low brass fundamental pitch, FF Bass & Bb Tenor, but that's just due to the length. The length is more for richer sound quality than low notes. I'm with you on high brass❤
That was absolutely amazing! Very moving! Congratulations on a great and sensitive interpretation!
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed!
That cover made me almost cry, I don’t know how does this video don’t have a million views. Keep it up! I love a lot your job 🥲

I have several other arrangements of your pieces on my channel as well and hope to continue doing more. Thank you very sincerely for the music you write, it is a tremendous gift to humanity. 🙏🙏🙏
to me the timbre change with dynamics matter way more than the change is volume
I agree
I've owned one of these since 1983. Mine had been a demo model with the NY Phil (at least that's what the Yamaha sales rep stated). So I bought it slightly used: the couple minor bell throat dents were repaired at no cost to me. Played it through college, and 23 years as a US Army Band Horn player. I stopped playing in 2009, when I retired. Now I've picked the Horn back up, started playing again. Needless to say, I have a very intimate relationship with this Horn after this many years (41 😉). Selling point when I originally purchased it was the incredibly easy, secure high register: to that point, it had always been a challenge. This instrument completely transformed my confidence level in all registers, and so greatly improved my Horn playing. It also has great power (volume) without great effort. As Ferris Bueller said... czcams.com/video/0wALArd2rvo/video.html
HAHA yes! Perfect use of the reference😂. That's so cool to hear your great experience with the 862! I loved playing this horn during the short time I got to borrow it. And everything you said lines up perfectly with my thoughts as well. The security in the high register and overall ease is unmatched on a horn of this style. There are three horn players I've known personally now who also own one and have said very glowing things about it. There have been a number of times one has popped up for sale, but I didn't have the money. Still dreaming of snagging one at some point hopefully.
Gosh, I love Eric Whitacre's music. Very well done! My personal favorite is October, I try to listen to it on the 1st every year, helps me get into the fall spirit, since i'm in an area that doesn't really change for the seasons. Keep up the great work, you truly play beautifully.
Thank you so much! I also love October, such a beautiful piece, and the choral version, which goes by the name Alleluia. Whitacre’s music really feeds the soul, I hope to keep playing more of it! Thanks for watching!
Hey Andrew Stump, You have nice and engaging content, and your performance is awesome. However, it seems you might be overlooking the SEO aspects of your channel. Your video lacks SEO optimization, which is why you're falling behind your competitors and your videos aren't reaching your target audience organically. I think you should consider this. Thank you and best regards.
You’re right on the money about Wessex and Mack Brass coming from the same factory. The company that makes these horns is the Chinese company Jinbao. Jinbao has really upped their quality in the past few years and distributors like Mack Brass and Wessex have been able to build a successful business model from it. I’m not sure about Wessex, but the people at Mack Brass will make small tweaks to the instruments if needed. Either way, these Chinese instruments are solid products for a remarkably affordable price.
Awesome! It's so cool that we're getting better and better affordable instruments these days. It has potential to music more accessible to aspiring students, which is totally awesome.
Can't imagine the time this takes, but you have the talent. Please make more if you can. You're singular.
Thank you so much! I certainly hope to keep at it; I appreciate the support so much!
I wish I'd unlocked this power when I was in high school/college. Beautiful.
So talented. So impressed.
Thank you so much!
The time? The talent? So impressed.
I appreciate it so much!🙏
Nicely done! I think I had occasion to play a Vienna Horn once or twice at music shows in the 1970s/1980s, but never had the chance to explore one for weeks on end. I agree with your observations: it's a unique and historical instrument, with a distinct sound. I'd love to own one, and experiment with it as you have. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences! And you're obviously a very talented young musician: best wishes to you, wherever your career leads you! 😀
I agree, it's certainly a very special instrument! I wish I could have had it longer, I miss it very much. I'm so glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
Hello, thanks for very fine review, I was a member of a youth orchestra back in early 80' in eastern Europe and I had some, leaky Alex 103 playing Beethoven 8th and famous "trio" in the 3rd movement. We played on regional festival, and it was great! Yamaha 668 resembles what I have in my mind as a horn sound. Now looking at retirement as a scientist, I bought about 15 y old Yamaha 322 single and I am getting my embouchure back! Your thoughts about that horn?
Very very cool! Glad to hear you're getting back on the horn! I have been very curious to try the Yamaha 322, but haven't had the opportunity yet. I currently own a Yamaha 314 (single f) which is fabulous, and knowing Yamaha's reputation for excellent quality control, I imagine the 322 is also a great horn. Would absolutely love to try it for myself though. Hopefully sometime one will turn up for me

Yes correct :) I guess I'm being lazy and using the Americanized pronunciation haha

@@andrewstump6138 alright then, worth a shot 😂 haven't seen many with that last name Beautiful piece though 👌
Haha, sure enough :) Thanks!
Lovely playing, Mr Stump, as usual. Les Preludes has always been a firm favourite with the music loving public ( and the Nazis ) with fine opportunities for the Horn players to show their stuff. Incidentally, as a retired semi-pro Horn player with more than a touch of daftness in him, the quartet tune has always reminded me of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow". Silly I know but there it is. You have to have a good sense of humour to stay with the Horn. Which reminds me of another Horn player's taste for the silly. I was engaged to play in the oratorio "Samson" by Handel. The library copy scores were meant to have all previous markings erased before being returned to the library but our copy for 1st/2nd Horns hadn't quite been cleaned up. The aria "Old Manoah's Joyful Steps" had been amended by a previous player to read "Old Manoah had a farm". We giggled our way all through it at rehearsal !
Haha that's quite a story! Thanks for watching!
I got to play 1st horn in Sanctuary by Frank Ticheli in high school. Was by far my favorite piece I’ve played to date. Been playing for 12 years.
That's awesome dude! I'll have to look that one up

It's goin on the list!
This channel should have significantly more than 891 subsribers, more like 800 000. The quality of your horn tone is impeccable and it is also nice to see that you are able to play not just the horn but also violin and viola. I must say it's quite odd that horn players tend to play violin too, certainly more than other brass players. And it's also nice to see this phenomenon because I also happen to play the horn, violin and viola. Well done sir, keep doing what you're doing!
Thanks so much, that means a lot! Wow, cool that you also play this unique combination of instruments! Personally I've never in my life met another horn player who played anything other than horn, but that's awesome that there are other multi-instrument players out there!
Underrated my god. I have more subs than you. It should be the opposite
Thanks, I appreciate that!

Hmmm… if you’re a horn player (or aspire to be like I do) you will notice the high C#. It sounded so effortless that I had to search through all the Andrews to see which one was actually playing it. I think bottom left Andrew appeared a little redder in the face than the others, but who knows? 😂 This was absolutely lovely! The fact that you arranged it is impressive. You are a gifted young man. If I had an ounce of your natural ability my horn journey would be much easier. Your tone quality is something I’d like to achieve if nothing more than to relieve my teacher’s very weary ears. I’m now going to search for some Whitacre to play. Any suggestions for someone with only 2 years on horn?
Thank you so much! Your method was absolutely correct 😂, the bottom left me was playing the high C#. I’m so glad you enjoyed it! And I hope you keep practicing! It’s hard to know exactly what would be most helpful to you not having heard you play, but something that always helps me is remembering to strive for balance in my technique. Never using too much effort, but only as much as I absolutely need. Keeping the air moving, and actually in the high register, I find a need to use less quantity of air, yet a faster airspeed. I hope you keep enjoying your horn playing!
I see that James Naigus has some Whitacre arranged for horn as well. Maybe I can find some sheet music there. 👍🏼
Oh yeah, for sure! He's a fantastic arranger, composer, and player
He is. An associate from Houghton Horns in Keller, TX, (look them up. The only reputable horn repair/dealer in this area) told me about him. He will be at IHS56 this year. My husband and I are going. One of my bucket list items. 😉 And here’s Houghton’s YT link. They are amazing!

Lovely. Simply lovely. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!
Those are so rare and weird! It's basically a smaller Eb Alto version of the Bb Tenor Baritone Horn, similar in concept to the Eb Alto version of a Bb Tenor Trombone. There is a smaller version that's even rarer. It is pitched in Bb Tenor like a Baritone Horn that's called the Bb Tenor Horn. It is the same length as a Bb Baritone Horn but it has a slightly narrower bore and slightly smaller bell. That gives it that sharp classic Tenor timbre everybody loves. None of the Saxhorns have conical tubing, unlike the Tenor Tuba/Euphonium, which gives them all a rich dark tone. In the UK they refer to the Alto Horn as a Tenor Horn & nobody knows why. My guess is probably because it has a Tenor tone in the low range. But like i mentioned, there is an actual fundamentally correct Bb Tenor Horn as well. The Alto Horns don't get used much because they don't have a very wide range, whereas the Horn in F is pitched almost an octave lower in Double F Contra-Alto which gives it that classic rich heavy otherworldly sound & a very huge range from F0 to F6 depending on the player. I'm glad you're a nerd for weird instruments too, pls keep sharing!❤
Those are so cool! I think the crook part is supposed to be on top, like if you rotate it up 180° it's supposed to be like that I think. Nice sound too. Glad you got a hold of one lol
Very cool indeed! Actually the crook under--the way I have it is correct; it can be confirmed looking at the Vienna Philharmonic hornists. Thanks for watching
@@andrewstump6138 Oh ok, my apologies. I've been looking at those lately and it seems like some have an under crook and some have an over crook based on the manufacturer, apparently I found they're not all the same lol.
That very well could be!

Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!
What were you playing in the beginning of the video? I love it!

Very nice tone bud!❤
Thank you!
Late, yes ik 😂, but congrats on the new horn and i hope you enjoyed it! That's the first Bb Wagner Tuba I've seen. The double F version, like F Horn, has a more mellow tone but is much harder to play. Do you still play?
Thank you! I've also encountered one of those double Wagner tubas, very different, but also as it advantages. since this Horn belong to my college, I had to return it, so I don't have it anymore, unfortunately.
@@andrewstump6138 Okay nice man! Do you still play?
Totally would still play if I still had a Wagner Tuba, but unfortuately I'm dependent on borrowing one whenever the opportunity arises; I'm not wealthy enough to own one myself, but maybe someday

It is exactly the same as the qa model, with the exception of the veneer finish and the fingerboard material. In every other way it is identical
@@andrewstump6138 Thanks! I'm looking for my first 7-string guitar, and this one looks really good! I'm just afraid it won't hold the tune so well
@@Alleyuno Yeah, I think it's a great choice! I think if you're willing to visit a shop and get it properly set up, it will hold tune just fine. Granted, I will say a guitar with a longer scale length can be more stable (The Jackson JS22-7 is an example of longer scale). But really the trick for the Ibanez is finding the right string gauge, (I eventually used a .062 for the low B, probably wouldn't hurt to go even heavier) and getting the nut properly filed for your string gauges. Then making sure the bridge is intonated properly and action is good, and I think it should be just fine. Good luck to you!
@@andrewstump6138 Really, being able to take it to assistance that can adjust the guitar would be a great option! I will analyze all the questions carefully, since a luthier is not so easy to find in my city
Okay, yes if you can find a guitar shop that would be great, best of luck to you!
