    I hope you enjoy this comparison of these two wonderful violins! We have a lovely 1911 John S. Dickinson and a 2012 copy of the Guarneri del Gesú "Il Cannone" by Scott Cao. Which one is which??

    Beautiful and fun!! I answered Excerpts 1, 2, and 4 correctly. I love the way you play the higher notes with the Chou.

    Wow! This was fun although I’m not a violin player at all! I’m a bass trombone and horn player. I really messed up these comparisons but here they are anyway:
    Excerpt 1: Violin A-Chou, Violin B-Dickenson
    Excerpt 2: Violin A-Chou, Violin B-Dickenson
    Excerpt 3: Couldn’t tell because both sounded so similar to each other.
    Excerpt 4: Couldn’t tell because both sounded so similar to each other.
    Thanks Andrew for this fun listening activity!👍🏻👌🏻📯🎻

      So glad you enjoyed it Steve! I always find these listening experiments quite fun, and interesting to learn about ourselves and how we listen, very cool😊

    I felt the SC Guaneri had a richer low register...noticeable in the Bruch. How would you rate your John Juzek to these violins?

    • @andrewstump6138
      @andrewstump6138  Před rokem

      Yes, I noticed that as well, the SC has beautiful rich low notes. I imagine the Juzek would probably fall somewhere in between. The Juzek was very powerful and brilliant, but balanced, and had a nice full low register.
      If I could have, I totally would have loved to put the Juzek in this comparison as well, but very unfortunately it will never play again-- it needed what I thought was minor repair work, but there was a bunch of hidden damage I didn't know about, and the repair costs were just prohibitively astronomical.

      @@andrewstump6138 Oh noooooo...even with the hidden damage it sounded good (from what I can tell from your video). Were there cracks or open seams? That one had sentimental value :/

      @@AprendizAdulto yeah it still sounded great and played great too; but there were extensive cracks completely hidden under the varnish, it’s a miracle the luthier actually found them when he did. If I had kept playing it much longer, it’s possible it may have randomly fell apart during a performance. So I’m very thankful I avoided that. It’s just a museum piece now I suppose.
      However I did just purchase a new violin providentially in January, to replace the Juzek, and I will give it a showcase in a video hopefully very soon.

    Cao meaning made by Scott Cao himself alone? Start to finish construction?

    I listened attentively with phones. Similar enough to me. My high frequency hearing is poor now. A good violin is wasted on me! Thanks, good luck

      Fair enough, it probably doesn't translate so well through the internet either, best to hear in person; hope you enjoyed the video though!
