You’re right on the money about Wessex and Mack Brass coming from the same factory. The company that makes these horns is the Chinese company Jinbao. Jinbao has really upped their quality in the past few years and distributors like Mack Brass and Wessex have been able to build a successful business model from it. I’m not sure about Wessex, but the people at Mack Brass will make small tweaks to the instruments if needed. Either way, these Chinese instruments are solid products for a remarkably affordable price.

Thanks! Yes I do recommend it, however there are other great options as well, especially on the used market. Holton, Yamaha, or Conn 6D/7D are great choices, but the Wessex is great too

Hello Andrew! I’m looking into getting the fh 611 but I’m still not fully convinced if it’s my best option. I’m looking for a horn that I can teach with as I am an educator. How has your horn hold up currently??
That’s great! I think the Wessex is an excellent choice especially if you are not in need of a fully professional instrument. I’m still really enjoying the Wessex, it plays great and sounds great, although it does have some intonation issues, and the low register is a little woofy, although I’m really nitpicking here. I would recommend looking at the used market as well, brands such as Holton, Conn, and Yamaha are ones you almost can’t go wrong with, but I do honestly think the Wessex would also be a solid choice for teaching purposes.
