I've had the privilege of owning this beautiful 1923 Juzek violin for the last several years, and it's become such a giant part of my voice as a violinist. I'm super excited to share it's wonderful story with you, and I hope you enjoy!

Juzek pronounced with a "y," from the Czech Republic. Lovely instrument.

Yes correct :) I guess I'm being lazy and using the Americanized pronunciation haha

    Hi Andrew,
Thank you for your video. I too have an old John Juzek 1925. It was my dad’s. I never took lessons and now at age 70 it is unlikely I would ever learn to play. So at this point I’m considering donating the instrument. It is in good shape as I had a local luthier do some minor repair. If it sounds as good as yours when played, it would be a shame not to have someone use it. So I’m exploring options to find a suitable home for it. How amazing your playing is. So glad I came across your video.

@@andrewstump6138 You are welcome!!! I also have one of the same violins you have !! I will be mantaining it and changing the strings!!!! I am exited!! It would be interesting if you can do a video on how musicians can tell if an instrument is the one for them. Just your point of view on this subject. What strings do you have on this particular violin? Thanks.

Ah sorry for the delay! That is super cool, very exciting! I would love to do a video on that actually, it's a very difficult thing to explain, but choosing an instrument requires a great deal of intuition from within. I had been using Vision standard strings on this violin, but I'm not sure I'm totally happy with them, more exploration is needed

I'm not sure, as it was gifted to me, but I think it would have been worth approximately 3500 USD currently

In the old days they called them Bohemian (Bohemia region) violins, and they vary in quality, some of them excellent. I've heard Guarneris and Strads that are not as good as yours. You mentioned you played a Roth at one point. I used to have an older neighbor that had a Roth and he would come over and have me play it just so he could hear it from the listener's angle. Compared to my sweet sounding violin, his Roth was like a cannon. The projection was off the charts. It was an ugly violin, almost black, but it had a powerful voice. I wish I had one to pair with mine for different kinds of music. But then again, Roths, like Juzeks, are either true, or shopped-out to other luthiers. The proof is in the playing. Maybe next video you can play the whole Sibelius for us. I used to put accompaniment on a synth. It made practice more fun. If I were a pianist I could play both parts and fuse them together like August Hadelich does.

Very cool! Yes my Juzek was indeed very special, it had an amazing sound. Very unfortunately, upon taking it to a luthier for a check up several months after this video was made, he discovered a bunch of improperly repaired cracks that were completely hidden from view, and the violin was actually just on the brink of falling apart. And thus due to the extreme cost of the repair work, this Juzek violin probably will never play again, it's just sitting it a closet in pieces now.
However, speaking of Roths, I did mention I played one years ago that I loved, and meanwhile I had the great fortune of being able to purchase a Roth just this January. It will replace the Juzek, and I finally got it back from the luthier with a proper set up last week. It's a gorgeous looking and beautifully sweet-sounding Amati model. I love it so far. A new video will be out about it soon, and perhaps the whole Sibelius as well, we'll see!
