Foxes in my garden - unexpected visitors
zhlédnutí 121Před 4 měsíci
#fox #foxes #britishwildlife #urbanfox Filmed on 17th January 2024. I know this is not in line with the theme of my channel, but I just had to share. I've lived in this house for over 15 years and this was the first time seeing foxes in my garden. The one which I assume to be male has a bad eye, so I named him Popeye, so it seemed appropriate to call his lady Olive The bird song in this video i...

    Thanks so much for your tutorial! So easy to understand! And I feel CONFIDENT I could make one of these treasures! Thank you!!! Just some suggestions: If you do want multiple folios to each signature, You can trim each signature separately using a straight edge and sharp craft knife. Trim the edges back to the original desired folded width. The trick is a fresh sharp blade and patience. Use more light cutting strokes instead of deep ones. Like you demonstrated on the book board. Also, I use an old beatup hardcover book as a make-shift whole punching cradle. Oh, lastly, try your hand at using curved needles. It makes it so much easier to do those stitches where you are attaching the signatures to each other. Again, this video was a joy and incredibly helpful to me! Happy binding! ❤️🙋‍♀️

    • @madebylora
      @madebylora Před 23 dny

      Thank you for your kind words and suggestions! I have tried trimming signatures since making this video and I did ok with it, but I still need more practice to get a very neat finish (I miss the big electric guillotine in the office at my old job hahaha). I did try once with a curved needle and while I found it easier to link to the previous signature, I found it more awkward stitching through the holes. I should probably give it another try. Thank you

(It’s funny to think it was named classic when it was brand new haha). And guess what…. The first one I had, I named Jack!!! (The second one was Bob). I loved doing work on them but unfortunately I am not a mechanic and eventually it got too much for me. My dad would help, but then he’d have a really bad back or neck afterwards and I felt too guilty to keep asking for help. I hope all goes well for you and your Jack! (I assume it’s fairly easy to get hold of beetle parts?)

      @@madebylora Thank you... Yes. I'm very grateful to have a large physical VW parts warehouse just up the road for original parts, ebay is great too & there's an online store for after market parts & modifications. And, should I ever get stuck my husband is also a very talented & experienced master mechanic 😁 (I won't, He's an original beetle, you can fix one with a hammer, a screwdriver & a can of WD40!! Haha). I love that you had a Jack too. Though sad it got on top of you & your Dad after a while, but then, it's hard work isn't it? The older we get the longer those aches & pains hang around!! Lol

    This is such beautiful work & such a beautiful gift. I'm brand, brand new to bobbin lace (awaiting delivery of all my goodies, from a lovely lady on ebay!) so thought I'd see if there were any bobbin lace vlogs on YT to give me a headstart & came across your channel. I do have a couple of vintage instruction & pattern books but I'm much more of a visual learner so watching you work & explain as you're going along. Thank you for sharing, Jojo

      Thank you! I’ve got a playlist of all the lace videos I’ve done so far, if you like my way of describing what I’m doing. I’ve got one video which is the very basic first steps. It’s over a year old, but seems to currently be one of my most popular videos on CZcams. I go very slow and step by step with winding bobbins and making the first basic stitches. At the time when I made that video I was self taught from books and CZcams, but I’ve since been to some lessons and hope to do more videos soon. Are you still local to Swindon? I go to classes in Tetbury (going today actually). Let me know if you’d like details.

      @@madebylora I'm watching through your lace playlist this afternoon & now ridiculously excited to get going! I definitely need more bobbins, I think, but I'll scour ebay for more. I'm not in Swindon anymore, I'm living in Birmingham now. I've had a look for classes or groups near me but there's nothing that's easy for me to get to, never mind though. One thing I would like to ask is about patterns. Even though I'm a beginner, I want to make some of my owns patterns for panels & pictorial pieces. I've scoured lots of websites & there are many beautiful pieces out there, they're not my sort of thing. Being a sci fi & fantasy nerd, who loves more traditionally masculine things, there isn't much available - I know I'm trying to run before I can walk but as undoubtedly beautiful the vast magority are, they're not inspiring me - How soon do you think I could make up a pattern of my own? Jojo

      I know what you mean about the patterns! I do like some of the girly lace patterns too, but a lot of them are like “nah!” It’s a lot of time and effort to put into something you don’t really like! Unfortunately learning the basics often involves doing progressively harder patterns to learn the important skills. I have a history of jumping too far ahead to the ones I like, but then can’t understand the instructions because of all the ones I skipped! Haha! I’ve only had one attempt at making a pattern from scratch and it was mostly ok (two linked heart shapes). I think if you can learn to do the cloth stitch, then “tape lace” might be a good way to start with doing your own designs. So you basically make an outline of whatever shape you want to do. Keep it simple. Actually my gold swans were similar to that. Obviously it got wider and narrower, but essentially it was just a big curve that looped over itself. Joining the bits that cross over might be a bit fiddly for a beginner, but, if you were planning to stitch it onto fabric or even to glue it down in a frame, I guess it wouldn’t be crucial to make the joins because you could fix it down other ways. I hope that makes sense! Maybe try a search for tape lace or “idrija” lace. I hope that helps.

      Oh, and about bobbins. I started off with 15 pairs and that was more than enough to start with (especially if you do try the tape lace idea, that doesn’t use many pairs), but if you stick with it and do more complex designs, you’ll soon need more. The current pattern I’m working on uses 40 pairs of bobbins! That’s the most I’ve ever used…. So far…. But my teacher does patterns that use hundreds of bobbins!!!

      @@madebylora Ahahaha I'm a bit of a bugger for jumping ahead, as you might have noticed! Haha My hubby says that my favourite hobby is collecting hobbies too (he's not wrong, to be fair to him!) & I've been thinking about relatively easy shapes to try & make into patterns but will be a good, sensible girl & start with book marks & insertion lace (handy, seeing as I started recreating Victorian fashions last year!) I have about 15 bobbins, total, not pairs. So will definitely need to get some more, I'm pretty sure 7 pr & a spare won't cut it, even for a newbie. I was thinking about the lace making goodies I've ordered through ebay last night, by another coincidence, there's a chance you might know the lady selling them because the parcel is coming from Swindon!

    Thank you so much for this! I knit and crochet, and always am drawn to lace type patterns, so I’m excited to get into real lace making! You made it make so much sense, definitely the best tutorial for beginners!
