Hi, My videos are mainly about the different aspects of my daily life, a lot which in some respects are less exciting than they once were but have way more content. Based in a remote northern tiny village my struggles and dangers are all very real. A harsh place to live with little financial resources I am learning a whole new way for life for me but one that has been and is still very real for most Arctic regions around the world. Here metals shatter like glass in the winter, our only source of heat is wood, modern resources are scarce and the nearest hospital is an hour away, as are supplies. The summers are spent gathering and working, the winter which is our longest season is spend creating inside my shop, snow clearing and logging.
I wanted to share my extensive and varied skill base if of any use and help others know the pride and pain of stepping out of society, all be it by accident. Financially I have never been so broke, yet my life has rarely been so rich.

Building an American front porch on a wooden house in Sweden.
Restoring an abandoned 1950's house destroyed by years of Arctic winters to allow the original owners son to move back with his family. Last year we reinstated the important infrastructure, this year we build back the front porch in the owners style of choice and it looks fantastic.

Simon, What an excellent job considering all the Problems you encountered, and I really admire your motivation , a lot of contractors in this country would have about three guys on the job and still not finish it in the time you took . I have also found it is worth paying the extra to get a good Stain and preservative that soaks well into the wood and apply several coats. That crane you have is invaluable in allowing you to safely work as a lone worker.. It was a pleasure watching the video
Thank you John, I used to own a large timber construction company and know how many men and how many hours and at what cost. All very nice but I started by myself and ironically ended by myself and everything in the middle was just noise. I am pleased to have entertained, now time for fishing so have a great day.
A dormer over the doorway would look nice?
This can get ripped of or damaged by excessive ice build up and cause un even weight loading.
Beauty is you have the mill and work shop
Yes, but all that still has to be paid for and has been agreed.
You are carrying the financial burden of the complete job Simon, your price for it can be passed onto the owner, like a deferred payments.
Really nice result and nice video to watch. I wondered why you didn't put the posts on top off the concrete footings. But in the end I noticed they are not on equal distances. I miss a gutter. Thanks for the video!
Thank you, thus the strengthening of the beams on top of the posts. The posts could have been just bad workmanship or a short measuring stick but most likely huge boulders that sit just below ground level.
The porch came out great Simon. I hate trying to do work on things that a not square or plum .
Hi Heith, I have learned to just roll with it. No point in getting myself stressed anymore.
@@arctic-rebel indeed . Some shit is just not worth it
Nothing is square, nothing is level.. everything...AHA!! is that why it's called Swedish?? Everything is ish.. square..ish, level.. ish Just kidding, I've had the pleasure to work with a Swedish carpenter and timber worker, a genuine genius when it came to finding great solutions when things were ish, like most buildings from both before and after WWII were.. but thinking about what they had to work with, they did a pretty good job of it as you said. Great job Simon👍👍
Thank you, I am not sure many, if any notice the anomalies with the buildings here and because of the very shori construction season everything would have gone up super fast with many hands on deck.
Awsome job!
Thank you
@arctic-rebel I wish you were around me to use your craftsmanship. Are you moving to upstate New York, Finger Lakes? No, I would much rather be up there.
I have learned to never say "never" life can be a journey right.
Yet again Simon ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!! Impeccable craftsmanship!!! Love it, love it, love it! And I’d also agree to the said rocking chair etc. you have got to be really proud of that porch turn out. As you mentioned it’s the behind stuff and structural calculations and being able to right or work with the existing structure…..absolutely beautiful and I love the shade of the stain. Loves to your good self and the family.❤️🇦🇺🇸🇪
Thank you Anne, I am so pleased you sorted out whatever problem you have, great to have you back. I agree with the behind stuff also LOL. You both have a great weekend.
well done!
Thank you.

You are very welcome Blue, thank you and have a great weekend my friend.
Fek Simon... stunning! When you started "rabbiting" in the beginning about the sanity of the way you planned to do this job, I fully got it. Fortunately you had the timber so that helped! I was imagining the hassle of you doing it bit by bit! Somehow, I'm of the opinion you saved yourself a large heap of trouble and money too! Anyway... what a great advertisement for your skills, attention to detail and pride in your work... soon, you'll have no rest at all. I'm envisaging requests for you to build more porches... in winter!! Haha! Just btw... I was also thinking of camping out there on the porch... then you said that's what you would do! But, I don't think I would be cheeky enough to have the barbie up there... just in case a coal drops and burns a hole in the decking!🔥🥴 Great, great job... and yes... rabbit on... we love it!! Happy weekend you there - all of you!
Much love AJ, thank you so much for being a loyal and loving friend. Never worry about the hot coals, it is wood and can be fixed! Just make sure you have water to put the fire out! I am glad I left in all the stuff I normally cut out it would seem everyone got it and that is what I wanted. You know when you are editing and your own voice drones on and on and then you just cut it out, you know. Well this time I just tidied it up. Anyway thanks and you all have a great weekend.
Very nice job Simon. And I agree that Tjæralin is very good, but expencive. Greetings from Norway - Asle
Thank you, some times you have to spend the money to get the result.
@@arctic-rebel I agree 100%
One more comment.a little plump no wrinkles ❤😊
LOL Thanks
How many years experience does it take to make it look reasonably easy .nice work and craftsmanship
I have to admit this is very basic construction to what I use to do but never the less you pull on all your experiences of more than 40 years to make it look easy.
First rate work. Always fun to watch someone who takes pride in their work. The half round front posts definitely make the look. Also not hard with your care and attention to see why the locals hire you to take care of their cabins.
Thank you, for as long as trust exists I can help. I also enjoy it.
Hi Simon and family.I like your humour.you know if you didn’t explain yourself some people will say what.you’re going to save yourself loads of time and time is money.great job 😊😊
Thanks 👍
Howdy Simon- what a fantastic video! The beginning of the video was anything but boring. You did an excellent job explaining your procedures for doing what you did. You seem to have the ability to make me feel as if I’m there with you helping some and getting in the way some. I certainly understand what you were up against building back to something that isn’t level, square, or plumb. It can be a frustrating task, but it can be done as you were able to show. Anyway, another awesome job done because of your skills. Take care my friend. God bless
Thank you my friend, you humble me and of course I approve. You know how it is just doing the think. I decided to leave in all the bits I normally cut out to see if y'all like it. I am taking the comments as a yes so thank you Paul. Have a great weekend.
🤠👍 This was pure entertainment! A really skilled performance. Take care, stay safe!
Thank you, I appreciate that.
Hello sir verry nice adition. You doubled the value of this house. Is much more usable. Maybe a litle steeper roof could help with high snow moving down. Did you need some permits for that? I hope not. Best wishes and greetings 👍💪
No Permit needed was just putting back what was there, only better.
All houses should have a Porch like this🤠 Great job Simon! A full day of light helps a lot in a job like this💪
I agree on both counts. Thank you
Proper job Simon. Came out very nice. Cheers for the upload.
Thank you
Nice job Simon! That is a lot of work for one guy. I know cause I did the same job at my cabin 20 years ago. I bought all the lumber right from a saw mill in the area. It was all rough cut hemlock. Only different thing I did was put braces at the top of the posts to the roof beam ( V ) to help make it more rigid.👍👍
Thanks Robert, this will have some too, just run out of time. They will be on before winter.
Fine job on the porch design and construction! Especially when working alone! Looks great!
Thanks Monte, hope your all well.
@@arctic-rebel Thanks! Doing fine, just enjoying the summer weather!
You just made from a barn looking a nice warm house! Great job! Casper will be glad to join a bike ride 👍

Well another job completed Simon. Hard to keep up with the grass with rain constantly. Was calling for a few hour shower today but then changed to 0% chance so decided not to put fertilizer on pumpkin plants. Hope your all 3 doing well. Thanks for sharing. Howdy Simon- it’s the time of year for grass cutting and hay. Everyone around here has been in the hayfields for several weeks now. Hopefully , we can get some rain through the summer for a second cutting. Was going to bail hay here this week but the holiday took care of that. Having a friend do it this year that my older brother helps out. So nice to have friends who are willing to help each other. Anyway, the yard around the theater looks really nice after the haircut. Take care my friend and stay safe. God bless
I hope you have had dryer weather Paul, there is no way our hay has been bailed dry. I am sure a second cut will be good but it needs to be dryed for fear it will all be useless come the end of winter. I will try now to keep on top of the grass there I have had a very busy few weeks. Huge video's coming! Be well my friend.
The grass grows like..well.. weeds up here too... Mowed it last saturday, and today it was almost to much for the mower even at the highest setting. Anyhoo... tomorrow my wife and I are going on a little trip, a short holiday with some friends. All the best to you and yours☺
Great, enjoy your time together and have fun.
Mmmm... you need an understudy... especially in summer! Happy week up there... as they say in the classics, don't do what I wouldn't!!😁😁
Maybe someone to do the well work, but I also enjoy that. Soon be winter and I can rest LOL No. Hope your all good in the sunny south. Be well my friend.

Awesome job Simon! Incredible how fast things grow in your Summer. Lots of dedicated hours with that historic building. Thank you.❤️🇦🇺🇸🇪
Thank you Anne, the 24 hours of sun means 24 hours of growth. I am looking forward to getting into that building.
@@arctic-rebel absolutely incredible ….. nature.❤️🇦🇺🇸🇪
Is that the way you sharpen the blades: Riding off and on the trailer with turning blades? ;)
I wish it was not true, but you can see for yourself now.
Looks good Simon 👍
Thank you
The soil there is fantastic nice beautiful lush green grass a long with some weeds mixed in looks good👍💪. All of our marshmallow hay bales are normally wrapped in white
I was also used to white, some are but we also have pink and blue. Not sure but think they use different colors depending of which cut and dry or wet cuts. Maybe.
@@arctic-rebel yeah that makes sense.. probably ones that are for betting or what we call here silage bales that are fresh cut no drying chop it and then bail it. I'm sure the colored plastic cost a little bit more though
🤠👍 The Theatre really needs some TLC. A rare historical building. Stay safe, Take care.
Thank you, I will be on it soon.
Its amazing for as cold as it is there in winter that anything would be green & grows. Do the blades on the mower run all the time ? Seen them spinning when being unloaded & loaded?
The 24 hours of sun means everything grows really fast for a short time in the summer. Yes when I disengage the blades they still run slowly because the belt is to small. If I use the correct size belt it slips with long wet grass so it is a balance of good and bad.
Rain i remember that stuff
It would be nice to forget about it for a while
Oh. My home town. I use that bridge every day to and from work. Makes me feel special to have shared a bridge with a youtube superstar😊. Love your videos.
