Clean DIY Solar Power Installation! How to use cable management #diy #offgrid
DIY! In this 3rd episode of the Off Grid Solar Workshop upgrade project, I continue working on the solar power equipment board. I will am installing cable management, a breaker box, a precision digital voltmeter and a coloumb counting battery meter. You can watch me perform the work along with commentary and detailed footage. Hope you enjoy this series! All videos in the series will be in a playlist linked down below.
Cable management is a great way to clean up a solar power equipment board installation. It tends to make the solar install look more professional and keeps wires from getting tangled up or snagging on something. In this video I continue cleaning up the installation and testing the equipment.

    I try to use/make all of my electric loads DC, and this takes things to the next level... I need to think about how to use my solar directly after the battery is charged. But also allowing any load to use the DC directly will also reduce the battery usage, at least during the day.

      Good thinking... there are lots of options you can leverage... I am trying to reduce dependency (and cycling) on batteries - reduce need of inverters and charge controllers too. Reduce costs and complexity. Who knows what is coming, having simple options to fall back on is a good thing 👍

Our feds up here have announced punitive sanctions on high tech, solar and batteries about two weeks ago- I am surprised at how quickly the supply pipeline stopped. Our shipping line and trucking logistics are becoming REALLY compromised. I had a heck of a time getting new tires for my Ford Ranger. If you are able to, I suggest taking time to assess your regular consumables in your sphere and acquire an inventory - this is coming from my exposure to a marine career. We are in trouble. Awesome video. I am making my way through each one of your videos starting at your very first one. I am learning lots. Everything was going great until you introduced the LED's. You said you connected 7 or 8 in series. May I ask was it 7 or 8? I have a basic understanding of the concept of needing a current limiting resistor for LEDs and I have heard of Kirchhoffs 2nd law and i think I can understand the concept when the resistor is placed in series with the LED. Now what you are doing is next level for me. Is any of my next sentences correct? 1. Since you are doing D2S( direct to solar) and you have potentially 21v of open voltage from your panel and your blower is 12 v then you wanted to protect the blower from over current with a string of LED's connected in series to act like a current limiting resistor. ??? 2. You connected the LED string in parallel with the blower? The positive end of the LED strip to the outgoing end of the switch and the negative end of the LED strip to the negative portion of your 2.1 x 5.5 mm female jack (power source) ??? 3. Connecting the LED strip in parallel will reduce the wattage to the blower when the voltage is higher. ??? 4. Could you have used a Buck converter to reduce the voltage from eg 21v to 12 volts or if you got a 24v blower then could you have used a boost converter to increase the voltage from 21 to 24volts????

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge Před dnem

      @waynehutson6225 Thanks! it's a blessing that my older videos are getting views I am super thrilled to hear it :) Otherwise they won't help anyone! 7 LEDs were used in the end. With a higher VoC panel, maybe 8 would be a smarter choice, it depends. There is actually no need for a resistor in this case. I know that's kind of "frowned upon". Nevertheless these LEDs continue shining and never burn out :) #1 correct on the potential voltage, the blower is 24v which negates the need for regulation, and the LEDs are in parallel. The LEDs are too small to regulate in this case, so I didn't depend on them for anything but "colorful lights". #2 The LEDs are in parallel, right! #3 Right also #4 Yes that would work, I was aiming for total simplicity so used a 24v blower. It will never reach it's max speed without a boost converter, but it's amazing how much air it puts out even at 17-20v (Hope this helps, anything not clear feel free to ask anytime)

The real damage is done.. we can make our lives more pleasant but we can't stop global warming now for at least another 100nto 300 years/// we will all be gone soon but the future generations will have it much worse then us...

      @solarpoweredge Před dnem

      @abelincoln3261 I know there is trouble coming, so I have been looking for dirt simple ways to do "high tech survival". Advanced, but dirt simple. What if we can't buy inverters and batteries? With even a 100w panel, some levels of civilization and technology can be maintained. Food can be cooked, lights operated, small stuff. But there is no guarantee we will have any solar panels left at all in 100 years, who knows, we might just have sticks and stones :)

    I have a different solar charger power bank. The thing I noticed is that in low light conditions the little LED indicator light (indicating that it is charging) actually consumes more power then the tiny solar panel is producing and when left in this state for an extended period, the thing will drain the battery without anything plugged into it. I'd be curious if this unit has the same issue or if they figured out how to not try and charge the unit if the solar generated is too small. Or at least, leave the LED off so that it can get the tiny amount of trickle charge.

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge Před 2 dny

      @JamesGreen-gv4yn It needs at least weak sunlight (like in a window) to trickle charge, if the light is too dim it comes down to a point where just the LED is blinking

    "They" have upgraded this old form factor pretty nicely. I'm skeptical that the panel generates enough power to actually charge the battery rather than just light the LED indicators. I don't believe this power bank has USB-C PD, which is why it wouldn't power your TS101 soldering iron.

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge Před 3 dny

      @ericchang7706 I like the rubber cables. The solar panel actually puts a few mA in, with weak sunlight. According to the manual, they state the solar panel is for trickle charging and don't leave it in the sun. I had already guessed that would be the case, with a lithium battery inside. I figured that was the issue with the C ports. The soldering iron wants 12v+. My upcoming project already has USB-A 5V 2.1A with leads, so I'm thankful for the USB-A port. Otherwise I'd have to order a USB C cable and chop it! Don't like chopping good cables.

      @cliffandrews They are addicting to use, and I'm not even a chef :) I just burn stuff mostly. That food sounds good... it would be interesting to know the watt count for an induction cooktop. I recently bought a very small induction cooktop, maybe I'll slap a meter on it and see what it takes

    Question for you. I have a 200 ah 12 volt power queen plus. Can I buy other brands of batteries and tie them together in ? Same size batteries different manufacturer. Or do they all need to be the same ?

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge Před 3 dny

      @Bailey463 1) As long as it's a 12v Parallel connection and not series connection, it's perfectly fine. 2) Even if they have a different AH capacity rating, no problem. 3) Each battery should be tested individually first, to make sure it's behaving properly. Once in parallel, it can be hard to discover a problematic battery. Hope that answers the question!

He has 1.3M subs . @canadianprepper I am Trying to get some increased traction on your video on making a hot plate to inspire you to do a build on this hot plate so that my husband can make it for me. Here is the comment to the Canadian Prepper : HI NATE my muscle bound friend. Fast forward 25 years post grid down when all your freeze dried food is gone. You are almost dead from old age. Your kids are still young and you have a beautiful garden. How are they going to preserve some of the food you are growing? Canning is critical but how are you going to do it? Your solar panels still work but your DC to AC inverter died long time ago and your batteries for your solar system will no longer hold a charge. You can't can over wood as the temperature is hard to regulate. You no longer have propane or other fuels for your camp stoves. No gasoline or diesel for your generator. The solution is a hot plate hooked directly to your solar panel. No solar controller, no batteries and no inverter. There is nothing out there like that till now. A guy just recently did a youtube video on it 3 months ago . czcams.com/video/Vb4bkJ0AHtA/video.html I think he has 3.7kviews on that video and 7.5k subscribers. • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge Před 5 dny

      @SEBTECHDIY Hello and TY :D it's limited by resistance, it's generally not dangerous to hook a 60w PTC to a 100w panel. If the PTC goes way up over 12v maybe that's a problem. The biggest challenge is matching the PTC properly to a specific panel, as they're all different
